The Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute Program is one of the oldest accredited cancer programs in the nation, first receiving approval in 1951 from the Amercian College of Surgeons and having continuous approval ever since. The program is approved as a cancer program by the American College of Surgeons' prestigious Commission on Cancer.
Commission on Cancer approval is based on an on-site survey to evaluate all components of the cancer program, including clinical services, research, community outreach, quality improvement, cancer data management and cancer committee leadership. Accredited programs must provide comprehensive cancer care that includes state of the art services and equipment. The program must show that patient education and support is provided including information about treatment options. The cancer registry is reviewed for the accurate collection of data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results, including lifelong patient follow-up. An approved program is also required to demonstrate that there is ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.
"Our continuous approval since 1951 is a true testament to the dedication of our physicians and associates to the cancer program. This designation recognizes the ongoing work of our multidisciplinary team to provide the highest quality cancer care to our patients."
