HaysMed general surgeon treats patients at St. Rose Health Center

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News

Everything came together when Dr. Jerod Grove, M.D., visited Hays Medical Center.

Prior to that visit, Dr. Grove said he had two things on his mind when deciding where to continue practicing medicine – a good place for raising children and the opportunity to practice in a progressive medical community.

The general surgeon wanted to serve a smaller community, as he is a native of Dodge City, Ks. And now he offers a wide range of procedures and surgeries to his patients at St. Rose Health Center’s surgery suite, including colonoscopies, endoscopies and some biopsies.

Dr. Grove sees patients at St. Rose two Tuesdays a month. His partner, Paul Teget, D.O., is at St. Rose the other Tuesdays.

“The goal is to provide as many services at St. Rose as we can,” the surgeon said. “In a large majority of cases, pre-operative and post-operative office visits are scheduled here at St. Rose.”

Any surgery that requires general anesthesia is performed at HaysMed. Examples of these procedures are breast-related conditions, laparoscopic colon resection and hernia repair.

In addition, Dr. Grove performs surgeries involving the gallbladder and appendix, as well as gastrectomies at HaysMed.

Many procedures are performed with laparoscopic techniques and “in the future I plan on using the da Vinci robot in some cases,” Dr. Grove noted. “I used it during my residency and plan to pursue further advanced training in robotics techniques.”

Dr. Grove said he is glad to be part of the HaysMed outreach to St. Rose and central Kansas patients.

“This community deserves a quality resource such as St. Rose,” he said. “This is a beautiful new facility that accommodates those who need outpatient procedures and many other services.

“We are filling a void here,” he added. “It is great when people can get the care they deserve without going to the big city.”

After fulfilling the pre-med curriculum at Dodge City Community College, Dr. Grove earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with an emphasis on analytical analysis, graduating Cum Laude in 2006. He then graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine with honors in 2010. His internship and residency were completed at KU also.

Dr. Grove has been recognized with a number of honors including the KU Professionalism in Residency Award that considers “exceptional student mentoring, while exhibiting the attributes of altruism, accountability, excellence, service, integrity and respect for others.”

He also was named outstanding chief resident in general surgery and earned several academic scholarships.

The surgeon and his wife, Sharon, have two children; Ryker is 2 and Brylie is 9 months. His brother, Dr. Jesse Grove, is a Great Bend chiropractor; their parents live in Scott City.

St. Rose specializes in primary care, prevention and wellness. Services include St. Rose Family Medicine, Convenient Care Walk-in Clinic, Great Bend Internists, imaging, infusion clinic, WellnessWorks, one-day surgical procedures, Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice and a comprehensive Specialty Clinic. St. Rose is co-owned by Hays Medical Center and Centura Health.

Hays Medical Center Foundation Completes Another Successful Drive Thru Flu Vaccination

By Alan Wamser - Community Health,HaysMed News

Copy of 20151025_073342The Hays Medical Center Foundation drive thru flu shots were once again an overwhelming success. On Sunday 3493 people were given free flu immunizations. This was the 16th year the foundation has sponsored this event and underwritten the costs of the vaccine.

“It is a privilege to be able to support this effort in the community,” Said Ruth Heffel, Hays Medical Center Foundation Director. “Getting a flu shot is one of the easiest things people can do to take good care of their health and we are pleased to be a part of this community program.”

Copy of 20151025_085909The success of the event hinges on the volunteers who give their time to make it all possible. Fort Hays State University faculty and nursing students were there early drawing up doses and giving shots during the event. Along with them were over 50 HaysMed Associates who set up, gave shots, directed traffic, provided meals and generally did anything that needed to be done to make the flu drive run smoothly.

“Our volunteers are the best!” said Kim Koerner, RN, Associate Health nurse at HaysMed and event organizer. “We love working with FHSU and our own HaysMed Associates never fail to give generously of their time so we can provide this much needed free service.”

Copy of 20151025_075601The food drive for the Community Assistance Center is also something that the community rallies around. This year the drive raised 2,140 pounds of food and $100.00 in cash. The food donation has been a part of the drive thru flu every year and is coordinated by the HaysMed Information Technology department.

According to Scott Rohleder, Director of Information Technology at HaysMed, “It’s a great opportunity for our department to give back to the community. Many of our Associates bring their family to spend the day and help out .”

After 16 years the process has been honed and the event usually goes like clockwork. The only item that really changes is the cost of the vaccine. While the exact cost of this year’s vaccine is not available the figures from past years show that in 2000 the cost for 2300 doses was $4,823.10 and last year, 2014, the cost was $37,148.94 for 3,385 doses.

HaysMed institute offers sleep apnea home test, other services

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News

Copy of Bryan Noone
Bryan Noone, R.N. and manager of the HaysMed Sleep & Neurodiagnostic Institute, encourages at-home or on-site sleep studies for those who are not getting enough rest.

Anyone who is wondering if sleep apnea may be the cause of a bad night’s sleep might be able to find answers with a home-testing device from Hays Medical Center.

HaysMed recently began offering this service, which has already become popular, said Bryan Noone, R.N., manager of the hospital’s Sleep & Neurodiagnostic Institute.

The institute is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, which serves as a benchmark for quality, said Noone, a registered polysomnographic technologist.

HaysMed voluntarily sought the accreditation.

“While some patients have their sleep study performed in our lab, those who might have obstructive sleep apnea may be eligible for the home test,” Noone commented. “This involves a small device they wear at home and return to us; it is specifically designed for diagnosing this condition.

“Our sleep physician will determine if it is highly likely you have moderate to severe sleep apnea,” he continued. “If you have no other significant medical conditions, the device may be the answer.”

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder that causes breathing to stop and start repeatedly.

Noone, who also is a registered sleep technologist, emphasized that a home test is not designed to diagnose other sleep disorders.

Testing for those conditions usually is performed at the institute. For example, a daytime nap test could be used to diagnose narcolepsy.

“Another test is designed to document the effectiveness of treatment and measure a patient’s ability to stay awake,” Noone said. “This is important for people in occupations such as commercial driving and aviation.”

Other services include patient education about sleep issues, which Noone said could be the most valuable service the institute provides.

“We love to help folks having sleep problems,” Noone explained. “Sometimes the answer is as simple as suggesting changes in their habits, which can dramatically improve the situation.”

Anyone who is hesitant to be tested at home or the institute should consider the importance of getting a good night’s rest, Noone added.

“Just think about the amount of time you spend sleeping,” he elaborated. “By the time you are 60, you should have spent about 20 of those years asleep. It is as vital to overall health as a balanced diet and exercise.”

Chronic sleep loss can lead to an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. It also can cause mood swings, and a decreased ability to handle stress, anxiety and mental exhaustion.

“We also know that memory consolidation and physical healing of the body take place during sleep,” Noone said. “A good night’s sleep just makes us feel good.”

Noone also pointed out that the institute’s accommodations are comparable to a hotel room. Each room has a full-sized, adjustable bed, and a recliner, television and DVD player.

“We also offer Wi-Fi for those who want to bring a laptop or tablet,” he said. “Although we are a hospital-based service, we try to keep it as un-hospital like as we can.”

Dr. Ted Daughety, who has more than 25 years of experience treating sleep patients, is the medical director at the institute. He is board certified in sleep medicine, critical care and pulmonology. Dr. Daughety is in the clinic regularly, along with Rhonda Schenk-Pitts, advanced practice registered nurse. A physician’s referral is necessary for sleep testing at home and at HaysMed; insurance often covers most services.

For more information, contact the institute by calling 785-623-5373.

HaysMed Physical Therapist Earns 2nd Specialist Certification

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News,Orthopedic Institute News

Billinger, Jill 2015HAYS, Kan. (October 22, 2015) Jill Billinger, Physical Therapist at HaysMed, recently earned a clinical specialization in orthopaedic physical therapy from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists (ABPTS).

According to the ABPTS there are 11 sports certified clinical specialists and 43 orthopedic certified clinical specialists in Kansas. Billinger is the only Physical Therapist in the State of Kansas to be Board Certified in these two specialties.   In addition to the orthopaedic designation she is also board certified in sports.

Specialization is the process by which a physical therapist builds on a broad base of professional education and practice to develop a greater depth of knowledge and skills related to a particular area of practice. Clinical specialization in physical therapy responds to a specific area of patient need and requires knowledge, skill, and experience exceeding that of the physical therapist at entry to the profession and unique to the specialized area of practice.

The specialist certification program was established to provide formal recognition for physical therapists with advanced clinical knowledge, experience, and skills in a special area of practice and to assist consumers and the health care community in identifying these physical therapists

Our team is fortunate to have someone with Billinger’s specialized knowledge and skills in both areas.” Said Theresa Roe, PT, Director of Rehabilitation Services at HaysMed. “She has shown real dedication to helping patients achieve the best quality of life possible through physical therapy by earning two specialty certifications.”

Billinger works in the outpatient rehabilitation department at HaysMed and has been an Associate of HaysMed since 2002.

Member of the Month – October 2015

By Alan Wamser - The Center News

oct15-brandonracett

Name: Brandon Racette

Member Since: September 2006

What are your fitness goals for 2015?

I mostly want to lose some body fat while maintaining muscle mass. I don’t have any specific weight or body fat goals I would like to reach, I just want to feel and look like a beast!

What is your weekly workout routine?

I do a combination of weight training with different types of cardio about 5-6 days a week. Depending on what muscle group I work on, I vary my intensity of cardio for the day.

What keeps you motivated?

I have a family history of obesity, diabetes, and other life threatening diseases that I am trying to avoid. Plus, I h just love the feeling of a good, sweaty workout. Maybe someday I’ll see an abdominal muscle pop out of my gut.

Do you have a success story to share?

In May of this year, I suffered a back injury that kept me from weight lifting and most forms of exercise. I gained about 20 pounds and lost some of my muscle mass and flexibility. After a couple months of recovery and a slow start back into lifting and exercise in general, I just recently finished a 30 day challenge and have lost the 20 pounds I gained as well as put on some muscle mass and increased flexibility. I feel better than before I injured my back and hope to keep making improvements.
