Hays Medical Center Foundation announces Estate Gift

By Gayla Wichman - Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute,HaysMed News

Joyce Specter.from webHays –The HaysMed Foundation has received a bequest of $127,564 from the estate of Joyce Specter. Mrs. Specter died in October of 2015.

Mrs. Specter was raised in Enterprise, Kansas and attended the Wichita Business College. While working in Wichita, she met her husband, Morton Specter who passed away in 1993. Joyce and Morton were longtime residents of Russell, moving back to Kansas after his service in the United States Navy during World War II.

As an avid and knowledgeable antique collector, Mrs. Specter paid tribute to things of the past. She restored and refinished furniture with an artistry that was admired by many.

The bequest establishes the Joyce D. Specter Hospice Endowment, a permanent fund in which the earnings will be used to provide funding for Hospice projects and programs at Hays Medical Center. Priority shall be given to residents of Russell County, Kansas.

“We are so honored to receive this bequest from Joyce’s estate,” said HaysMed Foundation Director Ruth Heffel. “Private gifts are crucial to help enhance and expand exceptional healthcare programs to better serve our patients at HaysMed.”

For more information on how to include HaysMed in an estate, contact the HaysMed Foundation at (785) 623-2350, email ruth.heffel@haysmed.com or visit the Foundation website at www.haysmedfoundation.org.

HaysMed Family Medicine opens new structure; continues with phase two

By Gayla Wichman - Family Medicine,HaysMed News

Copy of 20160126_113705Even though the project is still a few months away from completion, visitors to the HaysMed Family Medicine Clinic are noticing quite a few changes.

Patients and families are now seeing their health-care providers in the new addition, which has been completed. Phase two of the project is an extensive reconstruction of the older part of the structure.

Project completion is expected this summer at the facility, which Hays Medical Center owns and operates.

“We think the community will be impressed with what we have done so far, as well as the final result later this year,” said Leslie Dexter, office manager. “Visitors are enjoying a bigger and brighter lobby, and more privacy throughout the entire clinic.

“We also anticipate the new configuration will offer a better flow of foot traffic,” she added. “This means that checking into and out of the clinic will be smooth sailing.”

The expansion project also will result in more exam and procedure rooms. A total of 29 exam rooms will be available, up from 22. And there will be three procedure rooms instead of two.

“In addition,” Dexter noted, “rooms will be larger and doorways will be wider. Patients will have easier access to more comfortable surroundings.”

The renovations added 12,381 square feet to the clinic; 10,653 square feet are being remodeled to create a uniform look and feel in all areas of the facility.

Throughout the construction project, which started last April, the clinic has remained open full-time.

Shae Veach, HaysMed vice president of regional operations, noted the staff knew it was important to be available during the construction and they continue to make it work.

“It is always challenging for associates when any remodeling project is under way,” Veach said. “But our staff at HaysMed Family Medicine have gone above and beyond. The noise and additional traffic has not distracted them from caring for their patients.”

Veach added that patients and families “will be thrilled with the spacious clinic. The registration area will be more private and allow staff to better serve patients. A fantastic option will be the convenience of dropping off patients at either of the two entrances.”

This two-phase project is just one example of the HaysMed commitment to investing in the hospital and its clinics, Veach commented.

“We continually invest in maintaining our buildings, and the HaysMed Family Medicine addition and remodeling is another example of our commitment to a better patient experience,” Veach commented. “This will allow us to continue to expand the family-medicine practice to accommodate the changing needs of our community.”

Currently, the staff includes Dr(s). Heather Harris, Jeffery Henry, Richard Rajewski, Andrea Sandoval and Nathan Smith, physician assistants Nichole Ganoung, and Jennifer Williams and advanced practice registered nurses Susan Amrein and Camille Suchi. The total number of staff members is 34.

HaysMed Convenient Care reflects on year one; new location planned

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When the HaysMed Convenient Care Clinic opened a year ago, two main goals were easy access and affordable prices.

These expectations have been met and there is even more to come, said Terry Siek, vice president of patient care services/chief nursing officer.

We are evaluating the best location and hope to move to a location near I70 and Vine soon, Siek explained. It is currently located at 2501 E. 13th.

“Our commitment to convenience has been obvious and we want to take it a step further,” Siek said. “The new location, which will be announced later, will offer a more centralized location and even easier patient access.”

Since opening in January last year, the clinic averages 25 to 30 patients a day. During fall and winter months, however, influenza and upper respiratory illnesses increase the daily average to between 40 and 50.

The most common of these illnesses include acute pharyngitis; streptococcal pharyngitis; bronchitis; and acute upper respiratory infection.

“These types of cases are considered minor illnesses, which typically don’t require an emergency-room visit,” Siek said. “Minor concerns may be diagnosed through basic testing and treated by a nurse practitioner or physician assistant.

“This allows a patient to see a health-care professional at a more affordable rate since Convenient Care is billed as a clinic visit,” he continued. “Convenient Care also allows the Emergency Department to have more beds readily available for acute and severe cases.”

In the walk-in clinic, minor illnesses and injuries are the priority on a first-come, first-served basis. While insurance policies vary, the co-pay usually is in the $20 range.

“In the emergency room, patients with minor issues will be treated after patients with more urgent matters,” Siek noted. “Therefore, using the appropriate service is a win-win for everyone involved.”

To further accommodate patients, HaysMed began offering its Convenient Care wait-time app for mobile devices last year. It refreshes itself every few minutes and allows people to obtain basic information on how long they may have to wait at the clinic. The HaysMed Wait Times app is available at the Apple Store and Google play. Both iPhone and Android versions are available.

“You are free to walk in when it is best for you,” Siek commented. “We understand busy schedules and our patients are telling us this feature is very helpful.”

Clinic hours are 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The clinic’s providers include: Jennifer Acosta and Lindsey Rut, both physician assistants; Nicole Spray, Cammie Williby, Ron Williams and Margo Straub, all advanced practice registered nurses; Tiffany Dewitt, licensed practical nurse; Bernas Munsch, registered nurse; and Crystal Zeiler and Maribel Alvarez, office staff members.

“Our first year of success would not have been possible without these wonderful caregivers,” Siek said. “Each of them and our part-time staff who fill many roles enjoy caring for our community. They are doing a great job with the care and treatment of your family and friends.”

New test added; volunteers continue HaysMed tradition of service

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

Copy of 2016-01-09 10.14.56These HaysMed volunteers are the backbone of the hospital’s blood-screening program. In the back row from left to right are Nancy Jones, Debra McDonald, Ruth Mullen and Jim Mullen. In the front row from left to right are Jim Murphy, Jo Murphy, Debi Rempe and Patty Wellbrock

The blood-screening program at Hays Medical Center may be three decades old but its staff and volunteer organizers are still open to new ideas.

The most recent example of the program’s growth is the addition of the test for Vitamin D. It is now included in the list of options at the monthly walk-in events.

The next screening is scheduled for 6:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at HaysMed. Participants are asked to use Entrance B.

“There has been a lot of information in the news recently regarding deficiencies in Vitamin D,” said Nikki Mihm, director of Volunteer and Associate Services. “Our patients and physicians are interested in this and asked that we start offering this special test. We are happy to oblige.”

The fee for the Vitamin D test is $30. The other tests and their costs are: blood profile for $25; PSA test that checks a man’s prostate for $15; and the HGBA1C test to check for diabetes is $10.

Fasting is preferred before the tests, which are performed by HaysMed phlebotomists.

While the phlebotomists are HaysMed staff members, the program relies heavily on the hospital’s volunteers, Mihm said.

“Because of the volume of tests and the many contributions of our volunteers, we can offer these screenings at a much lower cost than a regular lab visit,” Mihm commented. “HaysMed recognizes the importance of these services to residents of our community and the surrounding area.”

An average of 200 people use the blood-screening service each month.

The program started in the mid-1980s as part of the annual community health fair at the mall. As the years progressed, it was available several times a year at schools and businesses.

The screenings, which are performed in the Miller Medical Pavilion lobby, have been held monthly since 2003. No appointment is necessary.

Volunteer Director Betty Baird started the program and her successor, Jo Murphy, continued in the role until her retirement.

Mitzi Krause volunteered as the blood-screening coordinator for more than 25 years and Debra McDonald has filled the position since July 2010.

“The volunteers make this project work,” McDonald said. “The phlebotomists and admissions staff are HaysMed employees but all other tasks are in the volunteers’ hands.

“As coordinator,” she continued, “I am so grateful for these wonderful volunteers who are willing to get up early on Saturday mornings and devote their precious time to this worthwhile project. We truly could not do it without them.”

The volunteers assist patients with registration and enter all information into the database. This allows HaysMed to track numbers of participants and types of tests requested.

Trina Gottschalk, phlebotomy supervisor, sends screening results to volunteer services for processing and mailing.

Patients receive their results usually within a week and may then choose to send them to their physicians. Results can be sent electronically to patients of HaysMed doctors.
