Hays, Kansas,   May 19, 2016 ―  HaysMed has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

To receive the Silver Plus Quality Achievement award, hospitals must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke achievement indicators for at least 12 consecutive months and during the same period achieve 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality measures.

These quality measures are designed to help hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. They focus on appropriate use of guideline-based care for stroke patients, including aggressive use of medications such as clot-busting and anti-clotting drugs, blood thinners and cholesterol-reducing drugs, preventive action for deep vein thrombosis and smoking cessation counseling.

“A stroke patient loses 1.9 million neurons each minute stroke treatment is delayed. This recognition further demonstrates our commitment to delivering advanced stroke treatments to patients quickly and safely,” said Terry Siek, Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer.    HaysMed continues to strive for excellence in the acute treatment of stroke patients. The recognition from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke further reinforces our team’s hard work.”

HaysMed has also met specific scientific guidelines as a Primary Stroke Center featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department.

“The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognize HaysMed for its commitment to stroke care,” said Paul Heidenreich, M.D., M.S., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. “Research has shown there are benefits to patients who are treated at hospitals that have adopted the Get With The Guidelines program.”

Get With The Guidelines®-S puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping hospital care teams ensure the care provided to patients is aligned with the latest research-based guidelines. Developed with the goal to save lives and improve recovery time, Get With The Guidelines®-S has impacted more than 3 million patients since 2003.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes, and nearly 800,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year

Member of the Month – May 2016

By Alan Wamser - The Center News

todd-meierMember of the Month

Name: Todd Meier

What are your fitness goals for 2016?

I would like to get leaner using a mixture of weights, cardio, and of course, diet. I feel I have the first two pieces already and will continue to work on the third.

What is your weekly workout routine?

I usually workout 5-6 days a week before or after work. My erratic schedule means I am usually not at the gym the same time every day.

What keeps you motivated?

Honestly, seeing old pictures of myself when my diet was totally wrong. I have celiac disease meaning I am gluten intolerant. Before I figured this out about 14 years ago, the food I was eating was actually harming me. I kept losing weight despite adequate intake and weight training. Once I figured out what I could not eat, my weight and training success skyrocketed.

Do you have a success story to share?

I have motivated my wife and kids to become more physically active. My son now is a member at CHI and my wife exercises almost 7 days a week. They always come to me with questions on training, stretching, cardio, etc. I am always happy to help even though I am still learning a lot myself.

HaysMed Celebrates Hospital Week May 8 – May 14

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News

Hospital Week 2015 Home Camera 131(Hays, KS – May 8, 2016) – HaysMed will be celebrating National Hospital Week from May 8 – 14 .  The theme of this year’s celebration is Health Care from the Heart.

The nation’s largest health care event, National Hospital Week dates back to 1921 when it was suggested by a magazine editor who hoped a community wide celebration would alleviate public fears about hospitals.  The celebration, launched in Chicago, Succeeded in promoting trust and goodwill among the public and eventually spread to facilities across the county.

From providing treatment and comfort to the sick, to welcoming new life into the world, hospitals are central to a healthy and optimistic community.  Hospitals are more than a place where people go to heal, they are a part of the community that fosters health and represents hope.

In recognition of the hard working Associates at HaysMed various activities are scheduled during this week highlighted by the Hospital Associate Appreciation Pizza Party.  Other events for Associates include:  Stepping’Up Step Challenge, Supply drive for HaysMed special projects including SANE Child Advocacy Center, Emergency Room, Comfort Care and Art Cart for cancer patients,  basket extravaganza to benefit the HaysMed Foundation and United Way, and a special TGIF in the Rock Garden Café.

The commemorative celebration serves as a reminder that hospitals are foundations of the communities that built and nurtured them.  Hospitals today are multi-dimensional environments that offer every medical specialty, with a focus on prevention and wellness.  They are there to serve people in every community from all walks of life.

HaysMed Celebrates National Nurses Week May 6 – 12

By Alan Wamser - HaysMed News

LogoDownload-Color(Hays, KS – May 5, 2016) — Every year, National Nurses Week focuses attention on the diverse ways America’s 3.1 million registered nurses work to save lives and to improve the health of millions of individuals. This year, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has selected “Culture of Safety: It starts with you “ as the theme for 2016. The ANA supports and encourages National Nurses Week recognition programs through the state and district nurses associations, other specialty nursing organizations, educational facilities, and independent health care companies and institutions.

Annually, National Nurses Week begins on May 6, marked as RN Recognition Day, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession. During this week, registered nurses at HaysMed will be honored by a breakfast on May 6 at the hospital.  There will be a reception that same day and the Lanita Smith, LPN of the year, Deb Boeken, Customer Care Representative of the year and Healing Hands Patient Care Technician of the year awards will be announced.  Notes of professionalism and thanks will be distributed throughout the week along with prize drawings.

ANA, through its state and constituent member associations, advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting economic and general welfare, promoting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and lobbying Congress and the regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

Traditionally, National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses, who comprise the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care. From bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.

Each athlete starts out with a performance evaluation.  The results are used by the staff to develop a customized workout that is designed to work on areas for improvement.  “Unless athletes know their current level of ability, it is impossible to realistically create goals and monitor progress.” said Shawn Landers, Athletic Trainer at HaysMed Sports Medicine.  “Our program identifies areas the athlete can improve.”

According to Landers, many athletes use this training to earn varsity playing time, starting roles or for a greater appreciation for the benefits of regular exercise.

Registrations are accepted through May 31.   There is an early registration discount of $50 off the $225 fee for option two if you register by May 16.    For more information or to register call 785-623-6369 or contact Landers at shawn.landers@haysmed.com or register online at https://www.haysmed.com/the-center/athletic-edge/
