Estate of Bob Schmidt Will Benefit Healthcare Now and in the Future

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

At a news conference on Tuesday, the HaysMed Foundation announced that the estate of Bob Schmidt, local businessman and community leader, included a $500,000 gift to the Foundation.

Co-executor of the estate and attorney for Mr. Schmidt, Joe Jeter, spoke on the generosity of Bob and his wife, Pat.

“Throughout their lifetimes, Bob and Pat Schmidt were generous donors to charities, foundations and building projects, not only in Hays but throughout the region,” stated Jeter. “HaysMed played an important role in the lives of Bob and Pat. They both understood the need for a medical center in our region that offered not only primary healthcare but specialty care, particularly in cancer.”

The Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute at HaysMed was named in recognition of significant donations received from the Leo J. and Albina Dreiling Charitable Trust and from the Robert E. and Patricia A. Schmidt Foundation. The Bickle/Eagle Health Complex was also named in honor of contributions made by the Schmidts and their close friends, Don and Chris Bickle of Hays.

Schmidt had served on the Hays Medical Center Board of Directors and also the Foundation’s Board. He was serving as a Director Emeritus at the time of his death.

HaysMed President and CEO Eddie Herrman expressed his appreciation for the bequest.

“Through the generous and thoughtful estate planning by Bob and Pat, their bequest will be added to the Robert E. and Patricia A. Schmidt Endowment at the HaysMed Foundation,” stated Herrman. “This endowment is permanently invested and the income will provide unrestricted funding for equipment and other special projects at the medical center. Bob and Pat’s legacy of giving will continue in perpetuity to benefit the healthcare needs of our families and friends in western Kansas.”

Powerful Technology Campaign co-chairs Dr. Tom and Debra McDonald announced that nearly $2.8 million had been received in gifts and pledges towards the $3 million goal prior to the gift. The addition of the Schmidt bequest brings the current total to $3.3 million.

Rave Reviews December 2017

By Gayla Wichman - Rave Reviews

Acute Care Unit
*My entire experience during my gallbladder removal was positive, friendly and proactive.
My team of nurses was exceptional. Thank you to Dr. Schultz and the surgical staff for
quality care.
*Jennifer and Robin, RNs, were both critical to me and provided the best care in a very
professional manner. Both were amazing care giving nurses who showed me
considerate , consistent and quality care. At that time I was not sure I was going to make it.
*Cassandra, Hailee, Andrea, RNs, were the best nursing staff for care that I have had the
pleasure to be served by. Both Cassandra and Andrea also managed to involve student
RNs in my care. All three students were very capable. Rich, LeeAnn, Jason and other
CMTs. Rich and Haily were a great team for night shift and were very capable each in their
parts of my care. Jason and Lab techs were very caring and capable in their duties—
vampire—but made you feel cared for even when having to do very deep sticks for ATGs or
regular lab. All staff seemed like they loved working with this team.

Cath Lab
*I had defibrillator replaced on 10-3-2017 and the nurse who did the pre-op was so friendly
and asked questions that made sense. When two other nurses could not get the IV in my
arm Devin Reed came over and put the IV in on the first try. After surgery we talked about
taking care of the incision. He was thorough. Great young man!
*Very professional—friendly. I am very satisfied with my medical care. Thank you!
*Everyone was great with care and personalities great. Enjoyed the time even though I was
the patient. Excellent care by everyone and were very informative, keeping me updated on
procedures.

CPCU

Dr. Ashraf is the best! The moment I arrived for my procedure I was treated kindly and
professionally. I received the best of care. I was confident in my doctor, nurses, therapists,
aids and everyone else that was involved in my care. I would urge anyone with a heart
problem to come to Debakey Heart. I couldn’t have asked for a better place. Thank you for
helping to save my life. I also had an aide by the name of Deann. I don’t know if spelling is
correct. She is wonderful.
*While Kenneth was at DeBakey Heart Clinic the healthcare Kenneth received was
excellent. He had very good care. He really enjoyed all the attention from everyone. Thank
you for your good care of him. He is doing fine now. Everyone was so kind and helpful to
his every need. Thank you.

Ambulatory Care Center
*As always the people who work here are some of the best, and I’ve been in quite a few
different hospitals. The nurse I was given today was terrific, she was there for any and
everything I needed. Her name is Susie Kohlrus. Thank you for being such a wonderful
hospital and having terrific staff.
*I went in to outpatient surgery for a left foot bunion surgery with Dr. Cheema. The check in
process and escort to surgery area went smoothly and stress free with all the amazing
friendly staff. When my nurse for the day, Caitlyn Dreitz walked in it was such a comfort to
see her smiling face and most amazing her remembering that she had taken care of me last
November for the same surgery, same foot. From the anesthesia to the outpatient staff and
especially being under Caitlyn and Dr. Cheema’s care I felt relaxed and blessed to have the
care I received at HMC.
*I have received excellent care at HaysMed. Wound Care—the doctors and nurses really
care for their patients.
*Very professional and caring. Thank you.
*The care I have received has been excellent. They have been very helpful if I have any
questions. I have no complaint. Thank you for your service.
*I have been happy with the results of my treatment there. Excellent staff in wound care
here. Thank you!

Imaging—Mammography

*Thank you for friendly and efficient service!
*Nice and easy. Receptionist was extra great! Thanks.
*I felt both Carmine and Amy provided me excellent care during my 4 months of cardio
rehab. They both paid close attention to my vitals and noticed that my medication may be
causing some of my vital readings to be off as well as my energy level. After corrections
were made my vital readings and physical condition improved. On June 21, 2017 I had
quadruple by pass surgery and heart valve replacement and was very weak and
discouraged when I entered cardio rehab. Due to Amy and Carmine’s encouragement and
coaching I have recovered and can do all tasks I was doing before surgery. Many thanks.
*I felt the cardio rehab team gave me personal interest and care in my treatment. They
always gave me honest feedback on any inquiry I had during my physical therapy.
*I feel like I made great progress toward better health—with the help from Amy and Carmen.
They do a wonderful job of caring and helping you improve. They are like angels from
heaven. I will miss their smiles and helpful ways—keep up the good job.

CPCU Continued

*All staff were great and informative. Thank you for such good care.
*HaysMed have some wonderful people here in this hospital. If I had any more problems I’d
like to come back here. I’m going to miss everybody here. Thank you very much.
*Everyone was very nice and helpful. Took really good care of me.
*His care here was fantastic. Nurses were excellent, OT/PT was extremely helpful, and
facility was perfect also. We can’t say enough positives about his time here. Thank you
very much. His nurse (Kathy—Day) was fantastic in so many ways. Also the education
prior to discharge was very appreciated. This was not provided in the previous hospital
where he was.
*Danielle and Ross were my nurses that went above and beyond. They gave fantastic care
but just as important gave me emotional support as I was healing and worrying about test
results. I couldn’t ask for a better team of nurses. I would also like to give a shout out to
Dr. Biring. He’s the best and I’m moving my care here to Hays. Respiratory therapy did an
awesome job also. Thankful for all the great care.
*Personnel and all staff very professional and courteous! Always made me comfortable
about care and outcome! The close contact with DeBakey Heart—excellent. Tia put in pic
line and was absolutely a pro and explained everything very well. All staff from top to
bottom—very pleasant and good at jobs. Excellent job by all!

Women’s Center—OB

*Through my whole pregnancy I was given the upmost care. We had plenty of visits and
biophysical profiles after 28 weeks, to ensure our little Rebekah was doing great. On the
day of delivery we walked in after my water broke at home and were immediately processed
and had her within the hour. The next 24 hours plus we were taken very good care of by
the staff.
*It was very quiet – nice nurses.
*All of our nurses and doctors were very friendly and were all able to answer our questions.
*We had some amazing nurses throughout our stay. I really appreciated the compassion
and knowledge they shared. The following nurses were exceptional caregivers; Kristin,
Abby, Kalin and Amanda. Also the clerk Nancy was very helpful and nice.
*Came in for delivery at 1620 on 9/22/17. Had Susan as a nurse. She was wonderful At
shift change I was given Amanda and she was great and very supportive. All of the nurses,
doctors and everyone else that helped with my delivery was great.

Women’s Center OB continued
*Considering how rapidly things progressed, we were impressed with all staff involved.
They all knew exactly what to do, reassured my wife and encouraged her and kept us both
very well informed with what was happening, their concerns, and what to expect before or
as it was happening. Overall, very satisfied with HaysMed Center and the entire process
from start to finish.
*Amanda in SSS was very personable, treated me well, knew her stuff. Cole in anesthesia
listened to concerns and acted appropriately LeAnn was quick to respond to call light, very
pleasant, made sure I was happy and comfortable at all times. Donna in Admissions was
fast and efficient. Shirely in EVS had room extremely clean. Food was delicious and hot!
Outpatient pharmacy delivered take home meds in a professional manner.
*Lindzie and Shannon were so amazing and made the birth of my daughter stress free!.
Both wonderful and sweet women.
*Great staff, great stay, great care!
Everyone has been awesome.
*I have received very pleasant care and the personality was of the best. It made us, the
family, feel very grateful. We couldn’t ask for more.

PT/OT/Speech
*Joyce and Kamine—These girls were great. Did a very good job.
*All services were outstanding! Please keep up the excellent work
*Everybody was really nice, helpful and cheerful. So I didn’t get so depressed. Being this
way my first surgery they helped out a lot letting me know I would get better.
*I got very good care—the staff is great.
*From the time I was admitted, through surgery, healing process to dismissed, the doctors,
nurses, all the boys and girls were very helpful and caring about my healing and safety. I
can’t say enough about how good they made me feel while I was here. Thank you so
much.

Bone, Joint and Spine Center

*I’ve been in a lot of hospitals—had a lot of surgeries and I’ve never had better care from
bottom to top. I can’t remember all the names, so suffice to say that everyone went above
and beyond. Thank you so much!

Western Kansas Urology
*Diana did a good job—was helpful and encouraging.

General Hospital

*Retired Nurse. Most clean, odor free hospital I have ever been in. Very Impressive! 95%
of the staff either spoke to me or smiled when came into contact. Café, food, etc. excellent!
All in all great experience. Care given my friend was top notch, staff informative, helpful
and their appearance and personalities top notch. Will recommend HaysMed to all.

Breast Care Center
Every time I visit the Breast Care Center, I am greeted with a friendly smile and competent
staff. Through my entire visit I feel like I am being listened to and treated accordingly. All
staff are patient and take the time to listen to my concerns.

Southwind Surgery
*Dr. Grove has cared for my mother’s leg through surgery and follow up appointments. The
staff in the office are absolutely wonderful as well as Dr. Grove. I would never hesitate to
come to Southwind Surgery. First Class all around.
