HaysMed MSICU Nurse Recognized with Daisy Award

By Gayla Wichman - Daisy Award Winner

The nomination for the newest DAISY Award Winning nurse states, “First and foremost in her heart and mind was the care she provided to our father and our family.” Those words sum up the reason why a patient’s family’s nomination led to the announcement and presentation of the quarterly DAISY Award to Maryjo Schmidtberger, RN. Maryjo is a nurse in the MSICU and has been an Associate at HaysMed since June 2008.

The winning nomination:

“We are incredibly grateful that Maryjo Schmidtberger was the nurse assigned to our father who was admitted to the ICU with a diagnosis of sepsis and aspiration pneumonia. Twenty-four hours after admission, he suffered respiratory distress while Mary Jo was present in the room. She quickly assessed the situation and immediately took charge, calling for back-up, calming him down and contacting the family to come to the hospital. Upon our arrival, Maryjo thoroughly explained what had occurred, talking to us in layman’s terms. Not only did she provide outstanding care to our father, she took great care of our entire family as well, leading us step by step through our anguish of having to make the tough decisions, praying with us over our father and staying later once her 12 hour shift was over to ensure the nurse taking over his care had all the important information. Maryjo connected with our entire family. We trusted her and she provided strong emotional support for us during this difficult period of time. Her positive attitude in encouraging us to stay hopeful yet to think ahead if our father took a turn for the worse demonstrates her dedication and loyalty to both her patients and their families. First and foremost in her heart and mind was the care she provided to our father and our family. Respect, Compassion, Spirituality, Trustworthiness, Excellence and Professionalism are all core values of Hays Medical Center. These values were shown each and every day by Maryjo in the care that she provided to our father. We will be forever grateful to Maryjo. “

Terry Siek, Vice President of Patient Care/CNO, said, “We congratulate Maryjo on the wonderful care that she provided to this patient and his family. Maryjo provided the quality of care and concern we value for all of our patients and their families at HaysMed.”

The DAISY Award is a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day. HaysMed is proud to be a DAISY Award Hospital Partner, recognizing one of our nurses with this special honor every quarter. Winners are selected by the Practice Committee based on blinded nominations. All nominations are active until selected or up to one year from the date of nomination.

To nominate a HaysMed nurse for the DAISY Award online, go to www.haysmed.com/daisyaward . If you have questions, you can call Connie Mermis at 785.623.2388.

Member of the Month – March 2017

By Gayla Wichman - The Center News

Name: Amanda Schlyer

Member Since: December 2004

What are your fitness goals for 2017?

  • Keep up with my workouts
  • Make consistent improvements in strength and endurance
  • Continue increasing muscle mass to help maintain/lose more overall weight

What is your weekly workout routine?

Typically, I workout with my awesome trainer, Chelsea, once a week, then rotate my other gym days between high intensity circuits, strength training, and moderate cardio. I aim for 4-6 days/week at the gym.

What keeps you motivated?

  • Chelsea (seriously, without her, I would struggle much more)
  • My Son
  • Knowing that time will pass regardless of my efforts and I don’t want to waste more time.

Do you have a success story to share?

I hit my all time high weight in late 2008, was able to lose some and then maintain that small loss for several years. When my son was 18 months old (2015), my weight was creeping up again and I decided to take care of it once and for all. I have lost a total of 140lbs, with 100lbs of that loss in the last 2 years! I follow a low carb lifestyle and focus on maintaining regular workouts.  I’m not done losing, but am enjoying the journey!

HaysMed CEO Announces Plans to Retire

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

Hays, Kansas (March 1, 2017) Hays, KS—John Jeter, MD, has announced plans to retire from his role as President and CEO of HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, effective January 1, 2018. Dr. Jeter joined HaysMed  in 1996.

In the last 21 years, Dr. Jeter has facilitated growth in services and locations, and has contributed to the health of the community through his leadership at the hospital and in Hays.

“My focus is to have HaysMed be the best tertiary care center in rural America,” explains Dr. Jeter.   “We want to create a state-of-the- art medical center because it is the right thing to do for our community and the region.”

An innovative and proactive leader, Dr. Jeter has helped HaysMed distinguish itself in a number of areas:

  • Fostering health and wellness of Hays residents by creating The Center for Health Improvement, a medical fitness center on the HaysMed campus, along with walking trails, classes and other health enhancement opportunities
  • Partnering with The University of Kansas Hospital on The Kansas Heart and Stroke Collaborative, a $12.5M Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Center award to improve heart and stroke care in Western Kansas
  • Establishing the DeBakey Heart Institute to bring cardiovascular surgery and services to western Kansas
  • Creating the partnership with Pawnee Valley Community Hospital and the St. Rose Health Center joint venture.

But some might say his biggest achievement was his vision for the future—a future where more Kansans had access to a higher level of care.

“One of my personal objectives was to contribute to the creation of a ‘system of care’ for Kansas,” says Jeter, “but I always knew it was going to require a partner.” He’s pleased HaysMed was able to find a partner in The University of Kansas Health System, which had a similar objective. (HaysMed became a part of The University of Kansas Health System effective January 1, with the goal of improving access to patient care and extending the commitment of high quality care shared by both hospitals throughout the state of Kansas.)

“John has always been committed to the people of Kansas, just like we are,” says Bob Page, president and CEO of The University of Kansas Health System. “We are grateful for his commitment and for his collaboration over the last four years as we built this partnership.”

Dr. Jeter’s retirement doesn’t come as a surprise to everyone. “We knew John wanted to move into the next phase of his life,” says HaysMed Board Chair Alan Moore. “It was important to him to complete the partnership agreement with The University of Kansas Health System, so he could retire knowing the residents of Hays and western Kansas would have access to a broader range of care-from common to complex. I speak for the entire Board when I say that we have admired, appreciated and supported Dr. Jeter’s vision and his leadership.”

The HaysMed Board of Directors will conduct a search for Dr. Jeter’s replacement. They anticipate a successor to be named late this year.

“I am confident the Board will find the right candidate to move the organization forward, and the organization will continue to be committed to outstanding patient care,” says Jeter. “I want to offer my thanks to the physicians, Associates, board and the community of Hays for their continued support of HaysMed throughout my tenure. Hays is a fantastic community to both live and work in.”

Rave Reviews March 2017

By Gayla Wichman - Rave Reviews

Wound Health and Hyperbaric Center

*Very satisfied, very happy with the wound care facility and also very satisfied and very grateful to the gals in the special nursing unit. Everybody did a good job, explained everything I needed to know and got me done in the quickest possible time and with the best explanations they could give me. I was real relaxed through the treatment process.

*I have been completely satisfied with the care I have received at the Hays Medical Center Wound Care Department. I could not possibly single out just one person, everyone I have encountered has been willing to go above and beyond what I would have expected. They have all been compassionate and caring, always concerned about my comfort and pain level. Each one should be recognized for their ability to put their patients at ease.

*The service is exceptional in all ways. I would recommend this clinic to any one that would ask me. I appreciate the care I’ve received.

*The entire staff is very accommodating and caring. I do not feel like a patient…I feel like a friend. Thank you.

*We continue to be very impressed and pleased with the care I have received at the Wound Care Clinic. The entire staff there are very dedicated professionals.

PT/OT/Speech/Outpatient Services

*Theresa, Kelly, Melissa—Thank you so much to all of you. My goal was to be out of the wheelchair and using a walker and I met that goal. I am also rebuilding muscle. It was nice to be somewhere where I was encouraged to continue to work hard and put that wheelchair aside. Thank you for your kindness and good care.

*Amazingly helpful! Therapists were willing to explore methods to help me. Gave me tools to help maintain progress and strengthen.

*I just wanted to thank all the people that helped me. From the person at the door to the two people who helped me. They were great. Thanks again for the excellent treatment.

*Whitney and Joyce were great. On my first visit Whitney took the time to show me what my injury looked like and explained what my treatment would be like and what I needed to do to accomplish my goals. She took the time to go through all the exercises I had been doing at the Center and eliminated the ones that I shouldn’t be doing, explaining why they would hurt my condition. Joyce helped to make my PT exercises fun, coming up with neat ways to do them and helping me to do them correctly. She showed me alternative exercises to do at the gym that would not hurt my condition. Both were very patient and kind and I am grateful to both for their help. Shelby at the front desk was always smiling and friendly.

*I was a patient of Deb’s and the care she gave to me was outstanding. I learned lifelong techniques/exercises that will not only help me recover from my injury but throughout my whole life. Just want to praise Deb for her outstanding work. Thank you.

*My therapists were Bob and Jana. I cannot begin to express their dedication and care for their patients. They both work very hard to make sure their patients receive the best care possible.

*Thank you so much to Teresa AND Jenna for their work with Taylor. She made so much progress since this fall. We appreciate their help in the recovery from Taylor’s accident and head concus- sion. Your office staff were super to work with also. Thank you and blessings.

*I have nothing but praise for all the help given by Kelly and Melissa. Thank you. Teresa was a very knowledgeable therapist. I was so pleased and grateful for the therapy she gave me. This lady will go far in her field. Thank you. You are in my prayers.

*I am very pleased with all those who have worked with me during my recovery of my knee. They were very nice, helpful and professional. I loved coming to therapy each week and from where I started I have come full circle. I thank each and everyone for the care given.

*Lindsey, Bob McAnay: Professional, empathetic and have great rapport. I looked forward to every session. They challenge you to do the best you can. All I can say is I have had great therapy sessions. Thanks.

*The staff was very thorough and also very friendly. I looked forward to my treatment because I knew I would be greeted with a smile and friendly conversation notwithstanding the fact that the therapy program alleviated the pain in my shoulder? Great Job.

*Janna and Melissa were a great help. Thank you to them and the two others who did the astim for me. My knee is very thankful.

*Everyone has treated me so kindly. It really helped with the recovery time. Thank you everyone. *Wonderful care, talented team.

*Recovery from rotator surgery could not have been this successful without the guidance provided by Brett. I am more than satisfied with the progress in my recovery which is directly related to my experiences here. Thanks to everyone involved with my treatment.

*I feel that the care that I received here at HayMed was above and beyond in what I expected. Whitney, was firm but very caring in all times. This really encouraged me to go further in my healing. I would highly recommend this facility to others!

*The staff members are very good at their job. They made me feel they were concerned about my comfort and welfare. They know what to do to help me and keep in touch with my physician. I felt I was given total care. Thanks a million.

*Having used your services before, I was very happy with Whitney and Bob’s attention to doing every exercise the “right” way. Each time I left I knew I worked as hard as I could and it lead to me feeling I’d accomplished my goals. Very friendly, helpful staff. Keep doing what you’re doing.

ICU

*My husband received excellent care during his stay at HaysMed. We have had the opportunity to be with family and friends in over 20 hospitals – including at least 6 ICUs in five
states. HaysMed ranks right up at the top of my list for excellent care. Concerned and courteous personnel, at all levels. The facility is well maintained and appears up to date. I definitely saw a high level of professionalism in the care of my husband.

*My fathers care in the ICU was wonderful. The nurses took the time to make his time here bearable. The three nurses that we had gave great care. They were all excellent and you can tell they love their job.

*It was very hard to recognize one person. They were all very helpful and wonderful. The food was exceptional especially the banana muffins.

Acute Care

*I was very satisfied with the level of care I received while at your facility. I would like to say thank you to all the doctors, nurses and pcts that cared for me. I will never forget how much they all helped me recover and to go home.

*I just wanted to let you know I was taken care of exceptionally well the time I’ve been here. There are three nurses I would like you to individually recognize. The first Cheryl Herman. She went over and beyond her job to take care of me. Lauri Johnson is the second, she has a great attitude on life and she tried to rub it off on someone else and for the third lady Laura Schwindt is one of the best charge nurses that I have ever known in a nurse facility.

*I cannot adequately express my gratitude and respect for the doctors and all the nurses and other staff at HaysMed for the wonderful care I received. Everything was done professionally with the latest technology to achieve the best results as painlessly as possible. Everyone treated me and my wife with utmost kindness and respect. I would recommend HaysMed and the entire staff to anyone.

Surgical

*I always have a positive experience. The staff makes sure you are taken care of and are as comfortable as possible. They also go out of their way to help. A special thank you to Kylie who went out of her way to pick up some items I needed. HaysMed is the best.

*Being in a hospital is normally a creepy feeling. When I came to this hospital I expected the same. When I arrived I was instantly seen to with care and concern and a lot of respect and I was in total awe of all the staff that I came into contact with. All were super nice and genuinely cared. Food was great. Medical staff awesome total 5 star from this guy…Thanks Hays Med.

*I am the mother of a patient. We were traveling from Indiana to Denver when my 14 mo. daughter got too sick to go on. The staff at HaysMed has been amazing to us. We felt home away from home.

*Being admitted before a holiday weekend can be troublesome, however everything went so well. All tests and treatment were always on time and well done. The nurse that night was wonderful.
I knew I was in good hands when she walked in.

Ambulatory Care

*On January 17 I had a colonoscopy. The staff was great. Nurse came in a couple of times to check on me. She explained how everything was going to go. The doctor was patient and answered all my questions after the surgery. Everyone was so nice and made sure I was comfortable. Pre op instructions were easy to understand.

*The nurse for my husband that prepared him for surgery and kept an eye on him till he was able to leave, was very attentive, gave clear exact instructions. Explained what to expect before, during and after surgery. Answered all our questions to our contentment. Made us feel comfortable at every part of the encounter.

*Everyone was so polite and professional. Melanie was the sweetest nurse, so very attentive and professional.

*Everyone was really great. Amanda in ambulatory was very helpful and cheerful and Traci J. in PACU was a great recovery nurse. All were very informative and helpful. Very good experience.

Sleep Center

*All of the staff that helped me at the sleep study center did a very excellent job of explaining the options to me and help me with the procedure and how everything would work. When they awoke me in the morning they answered my questions about where we proceed after that and they were very helpful.

*Bryan Noone did a fantastic job of getting me in and explaining everything and explaining it so I understood exactly how I needed to take care of my home sleep study.

Aaron in PT is the perfect example of what a physical therapist is and does. He has a unique way of getting a patient to push forward, just a little more without coming across in a negative way.
