Mother’s Milk Donation Center Established at HaysMed

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Women-Infant Services

Milk donations help save the lives of infants in need

Hays, Kansas (Aug 24)—  HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System in collaboration with the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition,  has established a Mothers’ Milk Bank (MMB)depository and is now accepting the donation of breast milk for MMB, a Colorado based nonprofit program of Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation who collects, processes and provides human donor milk. The program is being made possible through donations from the HaysMed Foundation.

Human milk is the key to a healthy future, providing newborns and babies with essential immune properties, growth factors, hormones and enzymes that they cannot get from formula. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, infants should be fed human milk exclusively for the first six months of life. If mother’s own milk is unavailable, donated milk from a human milk bank approved by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, which MMB is a member, is the next best choice.

On Wednesday, August 30 the OB/Lactation Department and the Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition will have a display in the Miller Pavilion with information on the Mothers’ Milk Bank.  From 11:00 am – 1:00 pm members of the OB Department and coalition will be on hand to answer specific questions.

HaysMed will be following MMB’s strict guidelines to ensure that milk donations are delivered safely to MMB’s Denver facility where it is pasteurized and distributed to babies across the country whose mothers cannot supply sufficient milk for their needs.

Since 2011, MMB has provided more human milk donations to hospitals than any other milk bank in the country producing an average of 12,000 ounces of human milk every week. Babies who receive milk donated by mothers in Ellis County and across the nation may be premature or have severe illnesses and need human milk to thrive.

MMB consistently provides more milk to newborn intensive care units than any other nonprofit milk bank in North America and adheres to the strict guidelines of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America.

HaysMed is one of three sites in Kansas that participate in the program.

To become a breast milk donor, mothers must undergo a blood test and health screening, be willing to donate a minimum of 150 ounces total, and have a medical release form signed by a medical provider.

For a full list of donor qualifications, please call 1-303-869-1888 or visit the Mothers Milk Bank website.  Women interested in donating milk may fill out the donor screening form on MMB’s website at www.milkbankcolorado.org or call 303.869.1888.

HaysMed’s Medical Oncology/Hematology Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Renewed for another 3 Years

By Gayla Wichman - Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute,HaysMed News

HAYS, KS (Aug 14, 2017) – The HaysMed Medical Oncology/Hematology Section of the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute has been recertified by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).  The QOPI® Certification Program provides a three-year certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet the highest standards for quality care.  HaysMed’s recertification is for another three years through May of 2020.

“We’re extremely proud to receive QOPI recertification for ASCO”, said Dr. Robert Rodriguez, Medical Director of Medical Oncology/Hematology.  “It represents our sincere commitment to excellence for our patients.”

QOPI analyzes individual practice data and compare these to more than 160 evidence-based and consensus quality measures.  The information is then provided in reports to participating practices.  Individual practices are also able to compare their performance to data from other practices across the country.  Based on this feedback, doctors and practices can identify areas for improvement.

To become certified, practices have to submit to an evaluation of their entire practice and documentation standards.  The QOPI® Certification Program (QCP™)  staff and steering group members then verify through on-site inspection that the evaluation an documents are correct and that the practices meet core standards in areas of treatment, including:  treatment planning; staff training and education; chemotherapy orders and drug preparation; patient consent and education; and monitoring and assessment of patient well-being.

The QCP™ is a project of ASCO’s Institute for Quality, an ASCO affiliate dedicated to innovative quality improvement programs.  It was launched in January 2010, with more than 200 practices already certified.  This certification for outpatient oncology practices is the first program of its kind in the United States in which oncologists can achieve certification by meeting the highest standards of care.  The QCP seal designates those practices that no only scored high on the key QOPI quality measures, but meet rigorous chemotherapy safety standards established by ASCO and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).

HaysMed Establishes Vein Clinic

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Imaging,Orthopedic Institute News

Hays, Kansas (Aug 14, 2017) – HaysMed has recently established a vein clinic for treating varicose veins, spider veins and other venous problems.  People who suffer from leg pain, welling, heaviness, restless legs and cramping are also candidates for vein treatment.

Veins in your legs carry blood back to the heart through one-way check valves. When the veins become diseased, the valves no longer work properly, and a backflow or “reflux” of blood leaks backward down the leg causing the veins to bulge or balloon. These dilated or bulging veins are called varicose and may occur on or under the surface of the skin.

Tiny red or blue bursts on your legs are called spider veins. Often seen on the thighs, around the knees, on the calves and at the ankles, they are a result of dilated venous capillaries that fill with blood and become visible.

Although heredity plays a role in 80 percent of all venous disease cases, other causes can include aging, obesity, leg trauma, hormones, pregnancy and occupations that require prolonged standing or sitting.

There are several treatment options available at the vein clinic including phlebectomy, endovenous laser therapy and sclerotherapy.  Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove varicose veins on the surface of the leg that local anesthesia and tiny skin incisions that do not require stitches and are barely visible when they heal.

Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) offers patients a minimally-invasive choice for treating varicose veins and provides them with quicker recovery and a return to normal daily routines, as compared to surgical stripping. Under local anesthesia with the aid of ultrasound, a catheter is placed and preciously delivers laser energy to the vein wall, causing the vein to close and seal shut. EVLT treatment is usually reimbursed by Health Insurance.

Sclerotherapy is the preferred method of treatment for spider veins. In this simple procedure, veins are injected with a solution that produces an irritation to the inner lining of the vein, causing scar tissue to form that seals off the unwanted veins. The number of treatments varies depending on the extent of the condition; the average number of treatments is six to ten treatments.

Patients will receive an individualized, comprehensive treatment plan to address each of their specific needs.  Consultation will begin with a visit at the Orthopedic center, which typically follows with an Ultrasound to assess the severity of the issue.  After this,  your procedure will be scheduled to take place in the HaysMed Imaging Center.

For more information or to schedule a consultation please call 785-261-7599 or 1-866-428-8221 or go to https://www.haysmed.com/vein-clinic/

Member of the Month – August 2017

By Gayla Wichman - The Center News

Member: Lynn Fisher

Member Since: January 2006

What are your fitness goals for 2017?
I am currently in the best physical shape I have ever been and I am just trying to maintain that. I think being physically fit helps me look younger than my actual age and I like to keep people guessing! But I am considering a half marathon; as I ran a full marathon 5 years ago, but did not properly train. The competitive part of me wants to try again and run a respectable time.

What is your weekly workout routine?

I try to attend HIIT and Muscle Maxx classes 3-4 times per week.

I also will run and lift weights, usually twice a week.

What keeps you motivated?

Honestly, I have to practice what I preach. As a physician, every day I see people with poor health due to poor diet and lack of exercise. I don’t want to be a hypocrite. So if I am advising people to get 150 minutes of moderate to intense exercise each week, I better be too! Also, I have made workout friends in the classes I attend and we tend to encourage each other!

Do you have a success story to share?

Over the past 9 months, I have really cleaned up my diet. I mainly drink water as opposed to the diet soda habit I used to have on a daily basis. I also eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and less desserts, which is a daily temptation at my hospital’s cafeteria. As a result, I am as trim as I have ever been and overall feel the healthiest I ever have as well!
