HaysMed Associate Receives Quarterly Associate Spirit Award

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Imaging

HAYS, Kansas (Oct 31, 2017)—  Phyllis Tesluk, Imaging Department, was recently awarded HaysMed’s quarterly Associate Spirit Award.  The Associate Spirit Award recognizes an outstanding Associate who has gone above and beyond their daily job duties to care for a patient, visitor or Associate at HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System.

Phyllis went above and beyond when a patient’s father had apprehension about a procedure. The patient’s daughter talked to Phyllis about the situation.  She assured her that when her dad came in for his injection  she would make sure everything was taken care of.  Phyllis kept watch on the list of patients for the patient’s dad and was there to greet him, do the injection, and followed up with the daughter to make sure they were satisfied.

Tesluk was awarded the traveling “Associate Spirit Stick”, $50 in chamber checks, and her own Associate Spirit Award parking spot for 90 days.

HaysMed Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center Aims to Raise Awareness of Diabetic Foot Ulcers

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Would Healing & Hyperbaric Center News

Hays, Kansas (Oct 30, 2017) – The Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center at HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, and a member of the Healogics network, is participating in the Healogics National Diabetes Campaign from October 30 to November 3.  The Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center at HaysMed offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds like diabetic foot ulcers. Team members across the nation will dedicate the entire week to visiting local physician offices to provide education on the treatment of potential or existing chronic wounds for people also suffering from diabetes.

An estimated 30.3 million people in the United States (9.4 percent of the population) have diabetes; including 7.2 million who are unaware they are living with the disease. The percentage of adults with diabetes increases with age, reaching a high of 25.2 percent among those aged 65 years or older.  In addition to age, risk factors for diabetes include diet, activity level, obesity and heredity.

High blood sugar levels, poor circulation, immune systems issues, nerve damage, and infection may contribute to a non-healing diabetic foot ulcer.  Approximately 15 percent of people living with diabetes will develop a foot ulcer. An estimated 14-24 percent of people with foot ulcers will experience an amputation.

Early detection and intervention can help to mitigate the possibility of limb loss. The [Wound Care Center name] recommends the following to help prevent diabetic foot ulcers:

  • Stop smoking immediately
  • Comprehensive foot examinations each time you visit your healthcare provider (at least four times a year)
  • Daily self-inspections of the feet, or have a family member perform the inspection
  • Regular care of the feet including cleaning toenails and taking care of corns and calluses
  • Choose supportive, proper footwear (shoes and socks)
  • Take steps to improve circulation such as eating healthier and exercising on a regular basis

Proper wound care is imperative to healing diabetic foot ulcers.  The Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center offers a number of leading-edge treatments including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Total Contact Casting (TCC), and Negative Pressure Wound Therapy. These specialized wound care therapies can aid in wound closure, new tissue growth, wound tissue regeneration and much more.

Contact the HaysMed Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center to learn more about diabetic foot ulcers or if you have a wound that will not heal. To schedule an appointment, please call 785-623-6502 or visit www.haysmed.com/wound-center/

HaysMed’s Convenient Care Walk In Clinic to Open November 2 at Big Creek Crossing

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

Hays, Kansas (Oct 26, 2017) —HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, will open it’s Convenient Care Walk In Clinic on Thursday, November 2 at its new location Big Creek Crossing.  The multi-tenant building is located at the northwest corner of the property, where the former Montana Mike’s once stood.  Starbucks will be occupying the other portion of the building.

“This will be a great location for our walk in clinic,” said Shae Veach, Vice President for Regional Operations and Marketing.  “The parking is great and the office is located just off of Vine allowing for easy access for our patients who live in Hays or might just be visiting and need medical care.”

The 4000 square foot area will feature 7 exam rooms, 2 procedure rooms,  a large waiting room and easy check in area.   The individual registration offices afford patients more privacy when checking in at the clinic.

The hours will remain the same, Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 7:30 pm, Saturday 9:00 am – 4:30 pm and Sunday 11:00 am – 4:00 pm.  The clinic is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas but open 9:00 am – 4:30 pm for New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Christmas Eve, Labor Day and 4th of July.

“We are very excited the new location afforded us the opportunity to be built to the specifications that we need for Convenient Care” Said Veach.  “The response to opening our walk in clinic two years ago has been so phenomenal that we expect to see even more patients once we move to this new location.”

HaysMed’s Low Infection Rates Recognized With National Certification

By Gayla Wichman - Breast Care Center,DeBakey Heart Institute News,Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute,Emergency Department News,Family Medicine,HaysMed News,Nursing News,OB-GYN,Orthopedic Institute News,Pediatrics,Urology,Women-Infant Services,Would Healing & Hyperbaric Center News

Hays, Kansas (Oct 23, 2017) – HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, is the only hospital in Kansas that has earned a prestigious certification because of its low infection risk. And it is one of only four hospitals in the United States to receive the Management of Infection Risk (MIR) certificate.

“HaysMed goes above and beyond current standards to prevent patients from acquiring an infection while they are in the hospital,” said Kim Koerner, BSN, RN, infection prevention officer/associate health nurse. “As a result, we are at or below national hospital-acquired infection rates.

“Every department here works to decrease infection risk by reviewing processes and practices,” Koerner continued. “High-risk areas became focal points for each department, which has resulted in decreased infection risk and increased patient safety at HaysMed.”

Koerner cited just a few examples of areas in which safety has been enhanced.

They include: decreased hip/knee surgical site infection risk; decreased surgical site infection risk in colon procedures and hysterectomies; decreased device-related infections with urinary catheters and central lines; and decreased infections related to the environment.

“This certification validates the importance of decreasing infection risk and increasing patient safety to every single person at HaysMed,” Koerner commented. “Eighteen primary factors that cover the entire facility are considered in certification.

“And it’s not only doctors and nurses that are involved,” she added. “Processes in maintenance, dietary and environmental science also are reviewed.”

Melanie Urban, BSN, RN, HACP, patient quality services director, said Koerner has empowered all HaysMed employees to enhance safety. “It takes the motivation of everyone here to identify vulnerabilities, re-design systems and efficiently manage resources,” Urban said. “The Management of Infection Risk Committee has been diligent in getting everyone engaged.”

The committee includes clinical and non-clinical associates, as well as Dr. Kayla Gray, Hospitalist.  “Attainment of this distinguished award demonstrates Hays Medical Center’s continued commitment to excellence in both patient and community healthcare. “ Gray stated.

HaysMed is accredited by DNV Healthcare, which is the entity that awarded the MIR certification. “This is a world-leading certification entity,” Urban said. “It helps us achieve excellence by improving quality and patient safety.”

MIR certification builds on three important pillars, Urban noted. These are: being proactive instead of reactive; developing a safety culture that is transparent and accountable; and engaging all staff in a systems-driven approach to safety.

“Therefore, our certification lets our community and region we serve know we have the resources and commitment to provide the best possible care while managing infection risk,” Urban said.

DNV GL – Healthcare, which operates in more than 100 countries, surveys HaysMed annually.  Patrick Horine, chief executive officer of DNV GL – Healthcare, said “achieving certification shows commitment to excellence. And it helps demonstrate to your community that you are performing at the highest level.”

Notice of Voluntary Recall

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

Hays, Kansas (Oct 20, 2017) – On October 19, 2017 it was brought to our attention by US Foods that a voluntary recall has been issued by Mann Packing regarding fresh broccoli and cauliflower because they are potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.  This recall was initiated after Listeria monocytogenes was found in the production environment.  All affected distributors and retail and food service customers are being notified.  To date, no illnesses have been linked to this recall.

It was determined on October 19, 2017 that HaysMed may have served this produce in our cafeteria.  This letter is to inform visitors and associates of the serving of this product.  If you ate this product at our facility between October 6th and October 17th, 2017 and develop any symptoms of listeriosis within 2 months of exposure, please notify your physician.   Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in pregnant women, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.  Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as fever, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The risk of listeriosis after exposure to L. monocytogenes is very low; exposure is common, but disease is rare. Please visit https://www.cdc.gov/listeria/index.html  or https://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm581389.htm for additional information regarding Listeria infections.

HaysMed Welcomes New Hospitalist

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

Hays, KS (Oct 5, 2017) – Dr. Patrick “Scott” Atkinson, Hospitalist, has joined the Medical Staff of HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System.

Dr. Atkinson completed medical school at Oklahoma State University Center for health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine.  He did an internal medicine residency at the Tahlequah Medical Group Teaching Health Center, Tahlequah, Oklahoma.  He is board certified in general internal medicine.

Dr. Atkinson joins the Hospitalist Team at HaysMed consisting of Drs. Kayla Gray, Erin Hemphill, Manoj Suryanarayanan and Brenda Weese, DNP, APRN-C , Anissa Sonntag, APRN-C and Susie Pfannenstiel, APRN-C.

Hospitalists are physicians who are specialized in the care of patients while they are in the hospital.  In the past a patient’s primary care physician provided care for their patient both in the clinic and while they were hospitalized.  Hospitalists have assumed the role of providing care while a patient is hospitalized.

They are also continually in contact with the patient’s primary care physician, keeping them updated on the patient’s status.  When patients are ready to be discharged the hospitalists help transition them back to the care of their primary physician.

HaysMed was one of the first hospitals in the area to implement a hospitalist program.  “With all the changes in health care the demands on a primary care physician’s time didn’t always allow the extra hours in the day to make hospital visits,” said Bryce Young, Chief Operating Officer at HaysMed.

“By using Hospitalists patients are assured that a physician is in the hospital 24/7 to address and direct the patient’s care.”

Hospitalists are well suited to oversee and coordinate inpatient treatment and ensure hospitalized patients receive appropriate care.  Since these physicians are based within the hospital, they are more readily available to consult with physicians, nurse and administrators, meet with family members and keep patients updated on their care.

Along with managing patient care, hospitalist help enhance quality and efficiency within the hospital.  The help develop new procedures to provide better patient care, provide safety and reduce expenses.
