Hays, Kansas (Jan 10, 2018)—The Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Outpatient Rehabilitation Department, Pulmonary Clinic and Information Technology were recently named the patient satisfaction award winners for the third quarter of 2017 at HaysMed.

Each quarter HaysMed recognizes the patient satisfaction award winners based on results from CAHPS (Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) surveys administrated by HealthStream.  Health Stream is the research firm HaysMed contracts with to conduct the government required Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) hospital surveys on patient experience.  The CAHPS survey is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients’ perspectives of hospital care. The CAHPS Hospital Survey is a survey instrument and data collection methodology for measuring patients’ perceptions of their hospital experience.   Four areas are recognized every quarter including an inpatient department, an outpatient department, a clinic and a non-clinical area.

The ICU Department was recognized for having the highest in-patient overall rating.  Their unit score was 100% putting them at the 99th percentile.  The ICU is a 12 bed unit and they have 20 full time Associates.

The Outpatient Rehabilitation, an outpatient department, received a score of 89.35% for patient overall rating which put them in the 80th percentile. The department has 13 full time staff members and provides 18,000 rehab treatments per year.

Garnering the clinic award was the Pulmonology Clinic.  They scored 100% which put them in the 99th percentile for patient overall rating.    The Pulmonology Clinic has nine staff members, one physician and one nurse practitioner.

Information Technology received the Customer Service Award for their services provided as one of the main infrastructures of the hospital.  They provide support that enables all departments perform better and provide quality patient care.  They have 35 full time Associates and handle over 20,000 help desk issues a year.  They manage 300 servers and 100 applications and also provide IT services for Pawnee Valley Community Hospital and St. Rose Health Center.

Hansen Foundation Helps Provide HaysMed Cath Labs with New Technology

By Gayla Wichman - DeBakey Heart Institute News,HaysMed News

Hays – The Dane G. Hansen Foundation has approved a grant of $250,000 in support of new technology for the two heart catheterization labs (cath labs) at HaysMed’s DeBakey Heart Institute. The primary objective of new equipment is to serve the cardiac health needs and improve cardiac patient outcomes of our residents and visitors to western Kansas. Clinical advantages of the new equipment include the ability to see more detail while minimizing risk to the patient through the use of higher resolution viewing equipment using less contrast. The newly outfitted labs also improve the safety and working conditions of our providers and patients through significant reductions in radiation exposure. More than 4,000 heart cath procedures have been completed by HaysMed’s team of interventional cardiologists in the last five years.

“HaysMed is proud to partner with the Dane G. Hansen Foundation in improving healthcare outcomes for the citizens of western Kansas. As a certified chest pain center, the DeBakey Heart Institute at HaysMed provides the people, the technology, and the facilities to allow folks to get quality cardiac care normally only available much further from home,” said HaysMed CEO Eddie Herrman. HaysMed remains the only health care facility in the region having achieved American College of Cardiology (ACC) Chest Pain Center Accreditation.

As with hospitals nationwide, HaysMed is faced with decreasing revenues in government and insurance reimbursement. Philanthropic support is critical. The Dane G. Hansen Foundation is committed to providing opportunities for the people of northwest Kansas to enjoy the highest possible quality of life through philanthropic support through a variety of areas, including healthcare. Over the past ten years, Dane G. Hansen Foundation Grants to the HaysMed Foundation have provided more than $1.25 million in support for projects benefitting the healthcare of families in western Kansas, including a $500,000 grant in 2016 towards the new CT scanner at HaysMed.

HaysMed Honors Nurses Completing the RN Residency Program

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Nursing News

HAYS, Kansas (January 5, 2018)—  Five registered nurses at HaysMed were honored recently at a recognition ceremony and luncheon.  They completed the yearlong RN Residency Program offered at HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System.

The program began a year ago in February 2017 and the nurses spent the first 3 weeks in a classroom setting.  The remainder of training focuses on clinical experience, one on one mentorship with their preceptor, high-fidelity simulations and on the job training. Additionally, nurses receive training from professionals in several departments, such as radiology, pharmacy, cardiac care, periop and others.

The RN Residency class included Benjamin Clinkscales, RN, Makenzie Henman, RN, Shaley Knickerbocker, RN, Kourtney Lovelady, RN and Carlie Morris, RN.

The RN Residency Program at HaysMed is one of only two in the state and has been offered since 2008.  Shari Hertel, RN heads the program and has oversight of all the training.   HaysMed also works closely with critical access hospitals in the region through a rural residency program to provide training to nurses practicing in the rural setting.

“It is so important for new nursing graduates to have a group of peers and mentors who assist them in enhancing their skills and becoming comfortable with the challenges of practice”   Said Hertel. “Our program is evidence based, with positive clinical outcomes that will help not only the participating nurses, but also our patients.”

Currently there are 3 nurses scheduled in the next program which begins in February.  There is also one nurse from Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in the Rural Residency program.  The program is open to newly graduated RNs.
