HaysMed Uses Computer-Assisted Navigation System for Total Knee Joint Replacement Surgery

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Orthopedic Institute News

Hays, Kansas – HaysMed has started performing total knee replacements in specific candidates with computer assisted navigation. Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Oluwaseun Akinbo MD, has recently incorporated this novel computer assisted navigation into his practice for performing total knee replacements.

Computer-assisted total knee replacement is a procedure that ensures a higher level of precision with bone cuts during the knee replacement procedure.

“With the aid of a real time surgical navigation system, we can improve on bony alignment and soft tissue balance, which are the two most critical components of a knee replacement.” Said Akinbo.

“The CAS system we have used is slightly larger than a cell phone,” said Akinbo. “However, the technology is the equivalent to the larger CAS in precisely measuring the information needed for successful total knee replacements.”

When your knee replacement is aligned precisely the forces across the components are even, which results in less wear on the joint replacement.

“Computer-assisted knee replacement is one of the most technologically advanced methods of performing your knee replacement today. Your body’s everyday function is dependent upon a high degree of perfectly coordinated motions based on precision.” Added Akinbo.

The computer based surgery is an option for anyone needing total knee replacement surgery. It is especially beneficial for patients at risk for malpositioning of components to include morbidly obese patients and patients with significant deformities. It also eliminates the removal of most indwelling implants prior to a knee replacement surgery.

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Nursing News

HAYS, Kansas – Eight registered nurses at HaysMed were honored recently at a recognition ceremony and luncheon.  They completed the yearlong RN Residency Program offered at HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System.

The program began a year ago in July 2018 and the nurses spent the first 3 weeks in a classroom setting. The remainder of training focused on clinical experience, one on one mentorship with their preceptor, high-fidelity simulations and on the job training. Additionally, nurses received training from professionals in several departments, such as radiology, pharmacy, cardiac care, peri-op and others.

The RN Residency class included Kelsey Belzer, RN, Caitlin Gabel, RN, Gabriela Garcia, RN, Nick Knickerbocker, RN, Ciara Kroeker, RN, Lindsay Mattison, RN, Sarah McDonald, RN and Omelia Thomas, RN.

The RN Residency Program at HaysMed is one of only two in the state and has been offered since 2008. Shari Hertel, RN heads the program and has oversight of all the training.

“It is so important for new nursing graduates to have a group of peers and mentors who assist them in enhancing their skills and becoming comfortable with the challenges of practice,” said Hertel. “Our program is evidence based, with positive clinical outcomes that will help not only the participating nurses, but also our patients.”

Currently there are 19 nurses scheduled in the next program which begins July 10.  The program is open to newly graduated RNs and RNs that have less than one year of acute care experience.

HaysMed Offers Cardiac Calcium Score CT Scan

By Gayla Wichman - DeBakey Heart Institute News,HaysMed News

Hays, Kansas – HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, has added an important new screening test that can identify serious cardiac problems early. Cardiac calcium scoring, also known as a heart scan or calcium scoring, can calculate your risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) by measuring the amount of calcified plaques in the coronary arteries.

Cardiac calcium scoring CT screening is a convenient, non-invasive test that evaluates whether you are at an increased risk of a heart attack. The computed tomography (CT) scans are painless, have no side effects and typically take seven minutes to complete.

This is one of five screenings that the public can request without a physician’s referral.

“Anyone can call and schedule any or all of these tests.”   Said Dr. Jeffery Curtis, cardiologist and director of cardiology services.  “The tests are all non-invasive and very simple to perform.”

Tests offered include screening for atrial fibrillation (A-Fib), peripheral arterial disease, stroke, aortic aneurysm and the latest for cardiac calcium scoring. The tests vary in cost from $15 to $75 or you can get all five for $150.  The tests are not covered by insurance.

“The procedures we offer are similar to the traveling mobile screens that are hosted by various organizations.   The beauty of our screens is that they are available every week, offer a larger choice and are performed by local hospital staff.  Cardiovascular screenings are a great preventative service for patients.”  Noted Dr. Curtis.

To schedule a screening any patient can call 855-429-7633 or go to https://www.haysmed.com/debakey-heart-institute/heart-health/cvscreening-hays/
