HaysMed Celebrates 2021 National Nurse Practitioner Week November 7-13

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Nursing News

Hays, KS Every day, nurse practitioners (NPs) are saving lives and improving the health of our friends and family. To honor their efforts, hospitals nationwide are recognizing the critical role of NPs as part of the annual National Nurse Practitioner Week (NP Week) celebration, held November 7-13 this year.

NPs provide a wide range of care to America’s patients in more than 1 billion visits annually. This year, the NP Week theme is “NPs: Going the Extra Mile,” recognizes the contributions more than 325,000 licensed NPs make to the health of patients nationwide. These health care professionals practice in clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, urgent care centers, nursing homes and private practices across the country — wherever patients are in need — and continue to provide front-line care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NPs assess patients, order and interpret tests, make diagnoses and provide treatment, including prescribing medications. As clinicians who blend clinical expertise with an added emphasis on disease prevention and health management, NPs are the health care provider of choice for millions of Americans.

“NPs play a critical role in treating patients,” said Terry Siek, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President for Patient Care.  “They play a key role in strengthening our ability to ensure patients have access to high-quality care.”

HaysMed employs 26 NPs at the hospital and clinics.

HaysMed Celebrates National Physician Assistant Week

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

Hays, KS – HaysMed will recognize the Physician Assistants (PA) working at the hospital during National Physician Assistant Week October 6 through 12.

Treating patients in today’s complex healthcare settings takes a whole team of professionals. Physician assistants are medical professionals with thousands of hours of training. Their skills enable them to diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, and perform many medical tasks.

As their name implies, PAs work closely with doctors and other healthcare providers. In most states, a PA has an agreement with a specific physician and practices alongside them. The supervising physician doesn’t have to be present when a PA is practicing, letting them take care of other tasks while the PA continues patient care. Physician Assistants can prescribe and administer medication, acting on behalf of their supervising physician. In some cases, PAs can even perform surgical procedures that use local anesthesia without the supervision of the physician.

“Physician Assistants are unsung heroes and deserve their moment in the limelight,” said Terry Siek, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care. “This week is to celebrate them and be thankful for their efforts.”

PAs at HaysMed include:  Alaina Dressler, PA-C, Surgery; Nichole Ganoung, PA-C and Jennifer Williams, PA-C,  Family Medicine; Mark Heimerman, PA-C,  Joshua Lahr, PA-C, Jared Reed, PA-C and Caitlin Thornton, PA-C, Orthopedics; Rachel Ketter, PA and Melvin Setter, PA, ENT; Kelsey Lahey, PA-C, Andrea Paul, PA-C and Tara Roa, PA-C, Internal Medicine; Brittney Stewart, PA-C, Convenient Care; Margo Straub, PA-C, Pediatrics; and  Amanda Volchko, PA-C, Cancer Center.

HaysMed Receives Prestigious Baby-Friendly Designation

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Nursing News,OB-GYN,Women-Infant Services

Hays, KS – HaysMed is proud to announce that it has achieved the highly prestigious international Baby-Friendly designation after a rigorous review process conducted by Baby-Friendly USA, the organization responsible for bestowing this certification in the United States.

This distinguished honor demonstrates that HaysMed is adhering to the highest standards of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. These standards are built on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, a set of evidence-based practices recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for optimal infant feeding support in the precious first days of a newborn’s life.

The positive health effects of breastfeeding are well documented and widely recognized by health authorities throughout the world. For example, the Surgeon General’s 2011 Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding stated that “Breast milk is uniquely suited to the human infant’s nutritional needs and is a live substance with unparalleled immunological and anti-inflammatory properties that protect against a host of illnesses and diseases for both mothers and children.”

HaysMed joins a growing list of more than 20,000 Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers throughout the world, 590 of which are in the United States. These facilities provide an environment that supports breastfeeding while respecting every woman’s right to make the best decision for herself and her family.

“We are extremely proud to be recognized for the hard work of our team members throughout the Baby-Friendly process,” said Terry Siek, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care. “This designation is a tribute to our commitment to ensuring that every woman who delivers a baby at our facility is given the resources, information and support needed to help her and her baby get the best, healthiest start in life.”
