HaysMed Practice Transition Program Receives National Accreditation and Recognition

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Nursing News

Hays, Kansas –HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, has announced that the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has honored their RN Residency Program with an Accreditation.

HaysMed RN Residency Program is accredited as a Practice Transition Program (PTAP) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs.

To achieve PTAP accreditation, organizations must pass an extensive application process, including a detailed application, submission of written documentation in the form of a self-study, and a site visit, which was conducted virtually.

The program was also recognized by the Department of Labor (DOL) as an industry Recognized apprenticeship (IRAP). Industry-Recognized Apprenticeship Programs are high-quality apprenticeship programs recognized as such by a Standards Recognition Entity (SRE) pursuant to the DOL’s standards. These programs provide individuals with opportunities to obtain workplace-relevant knowledge and progressively advancing skills. IRAPs include a paid-work component and an educational component and result in an industry-recognized credential.

“Achieving both accreditation and recognition is a groundbreaking moment for our residency program,” said Shari Hertel, RN, MSN, RN Residency Program Coordinator. “The ANCC accreditation and IRAP recognition motivates us to keep improving in nursing excellence. Our program gives our graduates the confidence to enter into any clinical setting knowing they were trained with the most current, evidence-based best practices.”

The HaysMed RN Residency Program was established in 2008 and applications are accepted 2 times a year for the yearlong training. The program is designed to transition newly graduated nurses from the academic to the professional practice environment in a welcoming and supportive way.   This program offers nurse residents training, competency and professional development, and support for the critical transition from graduation to clinical practice. Through supportive mentoring, coaching, and learning, RN residents develop clinical and leadership skills and are cultivated into nurse professionals who deliver high-quality patient care.

To date, more than 300 RNS have graduated from the RN Residency Program.

Computer Assisted Navigation for Direct Anterior Hip Replacement

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News,Orthopedic Institute News

Hays, Kansas – HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System, has begun performing total hip replacements in appropriate candidates with computer assisted navigation. Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Oluwaseun Akinbo MD, has recently incorporated this novel computer assisted navigation into his practice for performing direct anterior total hip replacements.

“With the aid of a real time surgical navigation system, we can improve on precision with implant positioning and restoration of normal anatomy.” said Akinbo. When your hip replacement components are well aligned and positioned, it decreases the risk of some complications like dislocation, excessive leg length discrepancy, and early wear.

“Computer-assisted hip replacement is one of the most technologically advanced methods of performing your hip replacement today. The longevity of your hip replacement is dependent upon a degree of precision that computer navigation affords.” added Akinbo.

The computer-based surgery is an option for anyone that is a candidate for direct anterior hip replacements. It is especially beneficial for patients at risk for malpositioning of implants.
