By Gayla Wichman - In HaysMed News, Orthopedic Institute News - April 13, 2023

Hays, KS – Wally Walstrom, DO, Director of Sports Medicine at HaysMed, has been named one of the recipients of the 2023 Rising Professional Award presented by Kansas State University College of Health and Human Sciences.

The Rising Professional Award is given to honor significant contributions made by a graduate in the early stages of his or her career. Recipients have demonstrated significant professional accomplishments in the areas of design, business, human behavior, teacher education or health sciences. During their return to campus, award winners meet with current students to share their stories and provide insight into today’s professional world.

Walstrom holds two degrees from Kansas City University. He received a master’s degree in bioscience in 2008 before he received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 2012. He went on to complete his residency at Via Christi Family Medicine in Wichita, Kansas, where he stayed to complete a sports medicine fellowship in 2016. He is certified with the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians. He also holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.

Walstrom also serves as the head team physician, healthcare administrator and the medical director for Fort Hays State University Athletics, roles he has held since 2016.
