HaysMed Launches Wait Time App for Convenient Care

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

Convenient-Care-3

HAYS, Kan. (May 15, 2015)    HaysMed has launched a wait time app for their new Convenient Care Walk-In Clinic.  The new smart phone application, HaysMed Wait Times, will provide the current wait times to your smart phone as well as directions to the clinic and phone connection.

The wait time is defined as “check-in to room” time.  It is the average time from when a patient arrives and checks-in at the clinic to the time when they are placed in a room and treatment begins.  The times are updated every 60 seconds based on actual times from the preceding two hours.

“We wanted to give patients information they need, at their fingertips, to make informed decisions about their care.” said Terry Siek, Chief Nursing Officer at HaysMed.  “People are on the go and need information in a timely manner to plan their days.”

The HaysMed Wait Times app is available at the Apple Store and Google play.  Both iPhone and Android versions are available.

Wound Center Offers Foot Health Tips

By Gayla Wichman - HaysMed News

would-center(Hays, KS) – According to the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society, the average person takes 10,000 steps each day and every step can place two to three times of body weight forces on the feet. April is National Foot Health Awareness Month and a time when the experts at the HaysMed Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center suggest people take a moment to stand up for their feet.

The Center treats chronic foot and leg wounds that are often caused by underlying conditions such as diabetes and vascular disease. It is estimated that 15 percent of all diabetics will develop a diabetic foot ulcer, and without treatment the wounds can lead to amputation or death.

“Checking feet every day, especially in patients with diabetes, can save money and save lives,” said Zurab Tsereteli, MD, Medical Director for the Haysmed Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center.  “Our center specializes in the treatment of chronic wounds and the underlying conditions that are not allowing that wound to heal in a normal time,” said Christina Cantrell, Program Director for the HaysMed Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center.  “A chronic wound is any wound that has not healed within 30 days, or has not had a 50% improvement within 2 weeks.”

The Centers for Disease Control has found that comprehensive foot care programs can reduce diabetes related amputation rates by 45 to 85 percent. There are also preventative measures everyone can do to improve foot health. The HaysMed Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center offers the following foot care tips:

•    Don’t ignore your feet. The National Institute on Aging cautions that foot health can be an indicator to certain conditions. For example, joint stiffness could mean arthritis, and tingling or numbness could be a sign of diabetes. Swelling might indicate kidney disease, heart disease or high blood pressure.

•    Changes that occur in the feet as we age include the foot and ankle losing some of their normal range of motion and becoming stiffer while there can also be some loss of balance while walking.

•    If your foot rolls too much toward the inside, it can lead to arch strain and pain on the inside of the knee. If your foot rolls too much to the outside, you’re more susceptible to ankle sprains and stress fractures. Examine the bottom of a pair of well-worn shoes and if they show signs of excessive wear on the inner or outer sole, you might benefit from adding orthotic insoles in your shoes.

•    Often the first sign of osteoporosis is a stress fracture in the foot, so it is important to get the proper daily requirements of calcium and vitamin D, which helps your body absorb calcium.

•    To stay steady on your feet, consider adding programs that include balance training such as Tai Chi and yoga to your exercise regimen.

•    Sitting can be as important as standing. Crossing your legs can cause pressure on the nerves and blood vessels and cause possible damage.

•    Medicare and many health care providers will reimburse a portion or all of the cost of shoes and custom inserts prescribed by a doctor. Don’t buy more than one at a time since the size and shape of feet change over time.

•    People with diabetes can’t rely on foot pain to alert them to a problem since diabetes can cause changes in the skin on the feet as well as nerve damage which can impair sensation of feeling. Each day, diabetics should visually inspect their feet and between their toes for blisters, cuts and red spots and swelling.

•    Have your feet examined during doctor visits, and tell your doctor about any redness, blisters or wounds on your legs or feet.

•    Seek medical treatment if a leg or foot wound has not healed in 30 days, or shows signs of infection such as increased pain, redness or swelling, foul wound odor or a change in color or amount of drainage from the wound.

The Haysmed Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center offers comprehensive wound care and leading-edge treatments including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, negative pressure wound therapy, bio-engineered skin substitutes, biological and biosynthetic dressings and growth factor therapies.

HAYS, Kan. (March 18, 2015) Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute will soon be equipped with a new imaging system called VisionRT that offers pinpoint accuracy and enhanced patient safety during radiation treatments.

The institute, which is part of the Hays Medical Center family, is one of only two facilities between Shawnee, Ks., and Denver to offer this system.

VisionRT is just one benefit that goes hand-in-hand with the new SBRT linear accelerator that soon will be available at the institute. SBRT stands for Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, which reduces the number of treatments for patients that qualify.

The new imaging system is just more icing on the cake. “VisionRT has three cameras that provide a three-dimensional map of the patient,” said Lindsey Fox, medical physicist. “We use this to track the patient’s position and movement during treatment. There are tight margins around the tumor, and with x-rays and CT images we can visualize the situation.

“Treatments will be done more quickly and we can monitor the patient’s movement at all times,” Fox continued. “We set the patient up in the exact position each time and if there is movement outside of tolerances, the radiation beam shuts off automatically.”

Leo Elms, medical dosimetrist/radiation oncology operations manager, noted the system is extremely accurate and reliable.

“It is so accurate,” he explained, “you can tell if someone blinks. It could be a slow, gradual movement or a sudden movement.

“The automatic shut-off ensures the proper area is treated,” he added. “We don’t want to treat areas that are not intended to be treated. With SBRT, everything is multiplied. So we take extra precautions to prevent radiation from going to areas where we don’t want it to go.”

The new system will benefit a majority of patients – whether traditional or more complex treatments are involved.

VisionRT also will allow Dreiling/Schmidt to offer what is called a “breath-hold treatment” that is important in caring for patients with certain breast cancers.

Elms and Fox noted this new equipment is just one more example of HaysMed going the extra mile for patients and their families.

“Dr. John Jeter, the board of directors and the administration want to provide high-quality services so that HaysMed can be the best community hospital,” Elms said. “We take that very seriously in radiation oncology and at Dreiling/Schmidt.

“We have the same equipment as major cancer centers, and go beyond what other centers do,” he continued. “We have decades of experience here, with a well-balanced, well-educated staff. It is a pleasure to work with these high-level professionals.”

Elms also noted that a person seeking treatment at Dreiling/Schmidt “is not just a number, not just another patient. The level of care here is probably not given at larger places because of sheer volume. We are fortunate here in western Kansas.”

Fox, who came to Dreiling/Schmidt late in 2013, said she was impressed early on with HaysMed. “One thing I noticed right away was the whole attitude here – not just in radiation oncology but throughout the hospital,” she said. “They are willing to make changes and stay current. This is a rapidly changing field with new technologies.

“HaysMed is open to this,” she continued. “No one is hesitant to make changes. We are staying in the forefront of technology, and are progressive and open-minded.”

Dreiling/Schmidt has been completely remodeled. It now features a more modern look, enhanced privacy and comfort, and new clinical treatment areas. Partial funding for the renovation came from contributions to the HaysMed Foundation capital campaign, “Beyond Medicine.”
