General Acute Care Nursing

Acute Care – This is a 46 private bed unit located on the second floor of the north tower, which provides care to adult and pediatric patients with Medical, Surgical and Oncology needs. This includes pre-operative and postoperative care. Our acute care unit is able to deliver extraordinary care to a wide variety of patient populations.

Bone, Joint & Spine Center – A 10-bed unit primarily for caring for joint replacement and spine surgeries. A DNV Center of Excellence Certified Hip and Knee Replacement Program. It is located on the third floor of the north tower. This unit provides pain control and individualized physical and occupational therapies. Nurses and PCTs are specially trained in orthopedics. Patients go through an education session with a nurse navigator who reviews the expectations before and after surgery, to help prepare the patient for surgery and recovery afterwards. This includes an educational booklet and one on one training time to review educational material, answer questions, and an opportunity to review and practice exercises.

Maternal and Infant Care – Hays Med Women/Infant Care Center includes labor and delivery, postpartum, surgical care of female patients and a Level 2 Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The unit is located on the first floor of the north tower.  We have 5 labor and delivery rooms, triage capabilities in an additional 3 rooms, a recovery room and two OR suites. Our postpartum area includes 12 private patient rooms. The Newborn ICU can care for up to 6 babies when needed and is within the OB area to ensure closeness for moms and babies.

All patients stay with us a minimum of 24 hours, longer depending on delivery type and when needed. Our staff nurses, patient care technicians and lactation consultants will help ensure that you and your baby have the care you need and are prepared to go home upon dismissal. Prenatal – Breastfeeding Classes are held throughout the year, in addition to Childbirth and Infant Care Classes. In person as well as online, self-paced, eClasses are available.  Sign up for Women/ Infant Care Classes online at haysmed.com/education  Women will also receive breastfeeding information and education at their prenatal appointments at The Center for Women’s Health throughout their pregnancy.  Women interested in applying for WIC during their pregnancy are encouraged to contact their local Health Department. Postpartum – Lactation Consultants/ Registered Nurses (IBCLC/RN) are available to make visits to assist with breastfeeding support or concerns, Monday- Friday. Our Inpatient Women/ Infant Care nurses have each had a minimum of 20 hours of breastfeeding education and work together with your infant’s Provider and Lactation Team for feeding plan support.

Outpatient Lactation Support – After mom and baby are dismissed, our Outpatient Lactation is available for further breastfeeding assistance with phone support and/or in person feeding consultations, Monday- Friday. Our Outpatient Consults are by appointment only at this time. Please contact Lactation Services at 785-650-2767.

Mothers’ Milk Donation and Outreach Center – HaysMed has been established as a Mothers’ Milk Donation and Outreach Center in conjunction with Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition and Mothers’ Milk Bank.

A nonprofit program of Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation, Mothers’ Milk Bank (MMB) collects, processes and provides donor human milk to infants across the country. Infants who receive the milk may be premature or have severe illnesses and need human milk to thrive. MMB consistently provides more milk to NICU’s than any other nonprofit milk bank in North America and adheres to the strict guidelines of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). High 5 For Mom & Baby Hospital – HaysMed has been designated a High 5 for Mom and Baby Hospital in 2014 as well as 2017 after recertifying.  The High 5 program is based on five key hospital practices crucial for a successful breastfeeding experience. Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative – HaysMed is currently working towards Baby Friendly Hospital designation. BFHI is a global program to encourage the broad-scale implementation of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.  BFHI assists hospitals in giving mothers the information, confidence, and skills necessary to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies and gives special recognition to hospitals that have done so.  In cases where patients have a medical indication or have made an informed decision to use formula, the safe preparation and feeding of formula is provided to mothers. Special Nursing Services – Special Nursing Services is a Specialty Wound and Infusion Center that provides a range of non-urgent treatments and services for a wide variety of medical conditions to our community and out lying areas.  Our team of dedicated and caring staff, work closely with Primary Care Providers (PCP) and Specialty Clinics to provide the best possible care for our patients.  Services Include the Following:  Monoclonal Infusions, Blood Product Transfusions, IV Medication Therapy including Specialty Medication Infusions, Antibiotic and Iron Infusion Therapy, IV Hydration Therapy, PICC Line Placement, dressing changes and wound care, Therapeutic Phlebotomy, Anticoagulation Therapy, Central Line Care including routine flushing and site care for Port A Caths and PICC lines, Subcutaneous and Intramuscular Injections and Negative Pressure Therapy.  These procedures will be provided when accompanied by a physician’s order and should be scheduled with the department at (785) 623-5254 or FAX: (785) 623-5152.  The hours of operation are seven days a week including holidays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center – There’s no longer any reason to live with an open sore.  The Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center offers expanded wound treatment for difficult, complicated or atypical wounds.  Likely candidates for treatment at the center are those suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure injuries, infection, minor burns, and complications from surgical wounds, compromised skin grafts and flaps and wounds that haven’t healed within 30 days.  In the United States, chronic wounds affect 6.5 million patients.

At HaysMed’s Wound Healing Center we treat these wounds and work to prevent reoccurrence by correcting contributing factors such as controlling infection and enhancing medical and nutritional status.  The Wound Healing Center is staffed with a unique team of specialists all dedicated to healing chronic wounds.  The combined knowledge of our team members creates a multidisciplinary approach to wound management.  We are dedicated to healing wounds that have not responded to traditional treatment.

Using state-of-the-art equipment and advanced treatment options, Like Hyperbaric Oxygen and skin substitutes, our team can help you heal your difficult or slow to heal wounds.  Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been shown to be effective in treating crush injuries, Compartment Syndrome, Diabetic Foot Ulcers, Refractory Osteomyelitis, and delayed radiation injuries.  Skin substitutes work to shorten healing time and enhance the body’s own repair response.  These treatments are tailored to each wound and every individual based on the response of the treatments. This unit cares for 375 patients annually.

Critical Care

Emergency Department – The Emergency Department is a specialized 13 bed unit of HaysMed that provides quality care. The ED is a Level 3 trauma center. This unit is located on the first floor of the south side of the Miller Pavilion Entrance.  The Helipad is located to the west of the unit.  Many of our ED nurses are Board Certified in Emergency Nursing.  This unit is staffed 24 hours a day.

Intensive Care Unit – Hays Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is committed to improving the health and well-being of its patients by providing close observation, state-of-the-art technology, and advanced medical treatment for patients with serious cardiac or medical conditions which may be life threatening.  The ICU is a 12-bed unit located on the first floor of the Bickle Medical Pavilion on the south side of Hays Medical Center.  The ICU staff comprises of a caring cohesive group of highly experienced physicians, surgeons, pharmacists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other health care providers who strive to obtain optimal patient Outcomes.  All are trained to utilize state-of-the-art equipment that allows us to manage a wide range of medical emergencies including but not limited to: Cardiovascular Surgery, Infection (Sepsis) Treatment, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack), Heart Failure requiring intravenous medications, Complex Pneumonia, Respiratory Failure requiring mechanical ventilation, Acute Respiratory Distress (ARDS), Stroke with TPA (tissue plasminogen activator), Endovascular Procedures (Aortic Aneurysm & Carotid Stenting) and Acute Renal Failure that may require specialized forms of dialysis.  It is our goal to provide personalized and compassionate care to ICU patients and their loved ones.

Progressive Care Unit – This spacious 22-bed unit is located in the Bickle Medical Pavilion on the second floor south tower of the hospital. PCU specializes in cardiovascular care and also houses the Clinical Decision Unit (24hr chest pain observation). The Progressive Care Unit provides care for a wide variety of cardiac diagnosis such as percutaneous interventions, cardiothoracic surgery, CHF and dysarrthymias. PCU also care for medical and surgical patients that need a higher level of care.  Finally, this unit cares for all stroke patients admitted to HaysMed. HaysMed is an Accredited Chest Pain & PCI Center and a Certified Primary Stroke Center.

Operating Room/Procedural Care – all units located on the first floor of the south tower of HaysMed.

Ambulatory Surgery – This 20-bed unit cares for outpatient surgical procedures including pre op and post op care.    This unit has 6483 patients annually.

Cardiovascular Lab – This unit has 2 cardiovascular labs as well as 8-bed pre and post bays.  It is located on the first floor of the Bickle Medical Pavilion and performs 1300 cardiac procedures annually.  These consist of heart caths, cardiac stent placement, ICD’s, pacemakers, cardio versions, peripheral interventions, watchman placement and electrophysiology procedures. HaysMed is an Accredited Chest Pain & PCI Center and a Certified Primary Stroke Center.

PACU– The primary function of the Post Anesthesia Care Unit is to promote high quality care to post-operative surgical patients. This 11-bed unit provides post operatively care for ambulatory surgery patients, and patients that require hospitalization for general, orthopedic, joints, spine, neurological, cardiovascular, pulmonary, urological, ENT, podiatry, dental, endoscopy and gynecological patients.

Pain Clinic – The primary function of the Pain Clinic is to provide pain relief to those patients that suffer from chronic and acute pain.  They provide services including lumbar and cervical injections, trigger point injections and pain consultations.  The clinic see’s patients with a referral from a primary care physician.  This unit cares for 1250 annually.

Surgery – This unit provides care to over 7400 cases annually by nursing members, scrub techs, CRNA’s, anesthesiologists. This department offers cardiac, vascular, plastic, urology, orthopedic, joints, spine, podiatry, pulmonary, ophthalmology, obstetrics, gynecology, dental, ENT, endoscopy, robotics, oral maxillofacial and general surgeries in a 10 surgical suites, 2 endoscopy suites and 2 C-section rooms.
