Warning Signs
It may be hard to know whether or not your child is suffering from mental illness. Children may not be willing to talk or be unable to explain their feelings or behavior. Some warning signs that your child may have a mental health disorder include:
- Self-harm
- Weight loss or gain or changes in eating habits
- Complaining of stomach aches or headaches
- Changes in sleep patterns or sleep disturbances
- Suicidal ideation
- Withdrawal and social isolation (avoiding school or social activities)
- Moodiness, sadness, irritability, anger or anxiety
- Changes in behavior or personality
- Emotional outbursts
- Cognitive performance issues (e.g., difficulty concentrating or changes in academic performance)
If you have concerns about your child’s mental health, the first step is to learn as much as you can by talking to your relatives and friends, your child’s teacher, caregivers, even parents of their closest friends, to see if they have concerns or if they’ve noticed changes in your child’s behavior. Share these concerns with your child’s healthcare provider – your pediatrician or family health physician.
Your child’s healthcare provider might recommend that your child be evaluated by a mental health care professional and can make any necessary referrals.
