HaysMed Hosts Angel Tree to Support Ellis County Children
/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna SwartThis holiday season, HaysMed is hosting an Ellis County Angel Tree, a heartwarming tradition organized by Teaming Up For Tots (TUFT). This initiative aims to ensure every child receives a gift, making a significant difference in the lives of many families during the festive season.
In Hays and Ellis County, the Angel Tree program offers a way for community members to directly contribute to brightening a child’s Christmas. Each child represented on the trees will receive two gifts: a clothing item and a toy. The community is encouraged to participate by picking an Angel from the trees located at HaysMed and other local businesses, to support families that face financial challenges.
The Angel Trees are set up six weeks prior to Christmas to maximize community participation. All gifts need to be returned by December 11th to Wal-Mart, Northwestern Printers, or First Kansas Bank, to ensure they can be distributed in time for the holiday. For those in need of assistance, TUFT invites you to visit the Community Assistance Center located at 208 East 12th Street in Hays to sign up for support.
This year, HaysMed aims to support 50-60 families, contributing to a total of 200 families supported across the initiative. HaysMed employs two long-time TUFT committee members, Mandi Dotts and Kristi Williams. Mandi Dotts along with HaysMed volunteer Cetra Salmans, are featured in the attached photo at HaysMed’s Miller Pavilion adding angels to the tree.
HaysMed extends its heartfelt thanks to all who participate in the Angel Tree program. Through the collective kindness of the Ellis County community, many children will experience the joy of Christmas. HaysMed and its partners are proud to be part of this compassionate initiative, demonstrating the profound impact of community solidarity in making the holiday season special for every child.
HaysMed Celebrates One Year Anniversary with Local Laundry Service, Master Cleaners
/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna SwartThis month marks a significant milestone for HaysMed as it celebrates the one-year anniversary of its partnership with Master Cleaners, a comprehensive laundry and dry-cleaning service that has taken over the entirety of the hospital’s laundry needs. The collaboration not only highlights HaysMed’s commitment to supporting local businesses but also emphasizes its dedication to sustainability and community involvement.
Since the inception of this partnership, Master Cleaners has managed the hospital’s vast laundry demands, ensuring that all linens, uniforms, surgical scrubs, and other washable items are impeccably cleaned, sanitized, and returned with care. This transition from HaysMed’s previous arrangements to a local provider has not only enhanced the quality of service but has also helped in reducing the hospital’s carbon footprint, thanks to shorter logistics routes and lower transportation emissions.
Recognizing the need to uphold the highest standards of cleanliness while also being environmentally responsible, Master Cleaners invested in new, high-efficiency laundry equipment—the only available equipment of its kind in Hays. This upgrade has significantly boosted their capacity and sustainability.
Master Cleaners is a family business that has been a staple in the Hays community for over 50 years, with Ryan Gottschalk at the helm for the past 12 years. Under his leadership, the company has flourished, growing in both size and reputation. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to see our collaboration with HaysMed, this is a testament to what local businesses can achieve together,” said Gottschalk.
HaysMed CEO, Eddie Herrman, also expressed enthusiasm about the ongoing partnership. “Working with Master Cleaners has allowed us to adhere to our core values of community support and environmental responsibility,” said Herrman.

HaysMed Announces First Successful EV ICD Procedure by Dr. Gopaldas and Dr. Morgan
/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna SwartHaysMed is proud to announce a significant milestone in cardiac care at the DeBakey Heart Institute with the successful completion of its first ever Extravascular Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (EV ICD) procedure. This groundbreaking operation was expertly performed by Dr. Raja Gopaldas, HaysMed cardiothoracic surgeon and Dr. Jacob Morgan, an electrophysiology cardiologist at HaysMed in November.
The EV ICD procedure represents an advancement in the treatment and management of life-threatening arrhythmias (irregular heart rate or rhythm). This device is implanted outside the heart, providing a less invasive option with potentially reduced risks of vascular complications and infections.
“We are thrilled to be at the forefront of cardiac healthcare by offering the EV ICD procedure,” said Dr. Morgan. “This technology not only enhances the safety of our patients but also improves their overall quality of life. We are proud to serve the Hays area and all of Western Kansas.”
Dr. Gopaldas and Dr. Morgan’s successful implantation of the EV ICD paves the way for more patients to benefit from this innovative technology with enhanced safety and comfort. The HaysMed DeBakey Heart Institute’s extensive Cath Lab team of healthcare professionals and cardiac anesthesiologist also assisted with the procedure.
“HaysMed is committed to continuing its tradition of providing top-tier healthcare to Western Kansas,” said HaysMed CEO Eddie Herrman. “I want to take a moment to express my immense pride and congratulate our entire team at the DeBakey Heart Institute. This milestone reflects the skill and dedication of our entire staff, from the surgeons to the Cath Lab team and nurses. HAYSMED STATEMENT
/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna SwartHAYSMED STATEMENT
November 22, 2024
Throughout our history of serving patients in Western Kansas, we have welcomed many highly qualified medical providers from diverse cultures to treat our patients. At HaysMed, we look for the most qualified candidates, and don’t discriminate. We are saddened by recent social media posts targeting our providers from diverse cultures.
There is a very real crisis facing rural hospitals nationwide. There are 193,000 open nursing positions annually in the U.S. There simply are not enough U.S. nursing students graduating to meet the demand.
We are grateful for our dedicated doctors and nurses who could practice in much larger metropolitan areas, but they chose HaysMed and are devoted to providing our high standard of care, and specialty care, to our patients in Hays and Western Kansas.
Given the rural healthcare crisis, every one of us at HaysMed knows what a treasure this health system is for our region. We are doing everything we can to be responsible financial stewards of this cherished community asset.
We are honored to work with people from diverse cultures. We ask members of our community to demonstrate kindness and respect for the medical professionals who share our vision to be the best tertiary care center in rural America. It is because of their education, experience, and dedication that we have earned the prestigious CMS 5-Star quality designation.
