Panel Sheds Light on Human Trafficking at Chamber Luncheon
The Hays Chamber of Commerce welcomed members and guests to its monthly Membership Lunch on Friday, June 27, featuring a powerful and informative panel discussion assembled by the HaysMed Human Trafficking Committee. The event focused on raising awareness about human trafficking and its impact on the Ellis County community and region.
The panel included HaysMed Forensic Program Coordinator Trisha Haskell, Ellis County Attorney Aaron Cunningham, Hays Police Department Sergeant Detective Aaron Larson, and retired KBI Special Agent Colleen Brooks. Together, they shared insights from their professional experiences, discussed local trends, and answered questions from attendees in an open and engaging Q&A format.
The HaysMed Human Trafficking Committee organizes specialized training sessions for healthcare professionals from HaysMed, regional Critical Access Hospitals, and the community. These sessions are designed to equip medical staff and community members with the knowledge and tools needed to recognize the signs of trafficking and respond appropriately within clinical settings.
“Healthcare providers are often on the front lines when it comes to identifying victims,” said Trisha Haskell. “Our goal is to ensure they feel confident and prepared to take action when they see the signs.”
HaysMed also emphasizes the importance of community collaboration in the fight against human trafficking, especially in rural areas like western Kansas, where access to resources can be limited. By fostering partnerships and offering educational opportunities like this luncheon, HaysMed continues to lead efforts to protect vulnerable individuals and support survivors.
