Advancing Women’s Health in Western Kansas – Dr. Hoskins and the Power of Robotic Surgery

August 21, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed continues to lead the way in women’s health across western Kansas, thanks in large part to board certified,  Dr. Timothy Hoskins, MD, and the da Vinci Surgical System. With more than 600 robotic-assisted procedures performed throughout his career, Dr. Hoskins brings a rare combination of surgical expertise, compassion, and dedication to improving outcomes for women in the region.

One of Dr. Hoskins’ specialties is robotic-assisted hysterectomy, a procedure that offers significant advantages over traditional surgery. With smaller incisions and faster healing, it’s especially beneficial for women who want minimal disruption to their daily lives. As the most experienced robotic gynecologic surgeon in western Kansas, Dr. Hoskins brings unmatched skill and care to every procedure.

“We’re proud to offer advanced surgical options that help women heal faster and get back to their lives sooner,” says Dr. Hoskins. “Robotic surgery allows us to perform complex procedures with greater precision, quicker surgery time, and recovery time, and less disruption to the body, that were previously large abdominal incisions.”

HaysMed is one of the few hospitals in western Kansas offering da Vinci Robotic Surgery for a wide range of gynecological procedures, including ovarian cyst removal, and treatment for fibroids. In rare cases when robotic surgery isn’t the best fit , Dr. Hoskins and his team are equally skilled in laparoscopic and traditional open techniques, ensuring every patient receives the most appropriate care for their unique needs.

For patients with an enlarged uterus due to fibroids, or a history of cesarean delivery, minimally invasive surgery remains a highly effective option. Procedures like robotic assisted hysterectomy offer many benefits, including same-day discharge, less postoperative pain, minimal blood loss, and a lower risk of injury to surrounding organs such as the bowel and bladder.

“Patients who undergo minimally invasive surgery often report quicker recovery, less scarring, and less pain,” Dr. Hoskins explains. “It’s a game-changer for women who want to return to their routines without a long hospital stay, especially for those women with an enlarged uterus and prior abdominal surgeries. ”

In addition to surgical excellence, HaysMed’s Birth Center remains a cornerstone of maternal care in the region. In 2024 alone, the center welcomed 553 newborns, reflecting its vital role in supporting families and promoting healthy beginnings.

Dr. Hoskins also works closely with board-certified urologist Dr. Ernesto Lopez-Corona to perform combined procedures, such as those for uterine and vaginal vault prolapse which could be causing issues such as incontinence. “By addressing multiple conditions in one surgery, we reduce recovery time and minimize anesthesia exposure,” says Dr. Hoskins. “It’s all about making care more efficient and comfortable for our patients.”

From cutting-edge surgical technology to compassionate maternity care, HaysMed continues to be the hospital chosen by women, for women.

HaysMed Announces New Format for 2025 Free Community Flu Shot Event

August 19, 2025/in Events, HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

After 25 impactful years, HaysMed is retiring its traditional drive-thru flu shot clinic and launching a more flexible, integrated approach to community health. Starting this fall, flu shots will be offered during our monthly blood screening events- providing a convenient, one-stop opportunity for preventive care.

Why the Change? The decision to discontinue the drive-thru format comes in response to changing community needs and increased access to free flu shots at local pharmacies such as Walgreens, Walmart, and Dillon’s. While our drive-thru clinic once served nearly 4,000 individuals annually, recent participation has dropped below 1,500. This new format allows us to better align with current trends and improve accessibility for our community.

What to Expect: Participants can now receive a free flu shot, participate in blood screening lab draws, or do both- all in one visit. Flu shots will be available on the following Saturdays from 6:30 AM – 10:00 AM at Entrance B (Miller Pavillion), Parking Lot B:

  • September 6, 2025
  • October 4, 2025
  • November 1, 2025

Children’s flu shots will be administered in the same area as adult vaccinations to simplify the experience for families. To help with flow and minimize wait times, participants may choose to go directly to the flu shot station or begin with blood screening.

A Legacy of Impact: Since its inception, HaysMed has proudly administered 69,802 flu shots to our community. In 2024 alone, we provided 1,300 adult and 378 pediatric vaccines free of charge, thanks to the support of the HaysMed Foundation.

Our flu shot events have also supported local families through food donations. In 2024, participants donated 583 pounds of canned food to the Community Assistance Center. Since 2007, we’ve collected a total of 26,854 pounds- nearly 13.5 tons of food! We encourage all attendees to bring a non-perishable food item to continue this tradition of giving back.

Community Collaboration: We’re thrilled to continue partnering with Fort Hays State University and Fort Hays North Central Tech nursing students, who will assist with flu shot administration. Their involvement ensures hands-on learning and reflects the spirit of community collaboration.

Watch the HaysMed 2025 Flu Shot video about this change here.

Flu Shot Key Details:

  • Free flu shots available for individuals 6 months and older
  • No appointment necessary
  • Participants may choose to receive a flu shot, participate in blood screening lab draws, or both
  • Consent forms available at haysmedfoundation.org/flu/ – please complete, print, and bring a signed copy for each person being vaccinated
  • Short-sleeved shirts recommended for ease of vaccination

HaysMed Recognizes Jana Bieberle, CRNA, as HealthCare Champion

August 12, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed is proud to announce that Jana Bieberle, CRNA, has been named the newest HealthCare Champion, an honor awarded to team members who go above and beyond in delivering exceptional care.

Jana was nominated by a grateful patient, who shared the following heartfelt message:

“I had to have a procedure requiring general anesthesia, and while I have had such in the past, it has never been a glamorous or manageable experience. However, after chatting with Jana and giving her more information about why those experiences were always rough, she was able to tailor my anesthesia experience so that it was less traumatic than previous, and a more positive experience for all of those around, also. I appreciate her willingness to listen and take the time to figure out the best way to make sure I felt the best I could. Thanks so much for your compassion, Jana! You truly made my SDC experience comfortable and allowed me to feel confident in the whole team. I appreciate you!”

Jana is a valued member of the HaysMed team, and her recognition reflects the high standard of care provided by the HaysMed Anesthesia Department. Pictured alongside Jana are fellow CRNAs Marian Lindberg and Tanna Vine, who also contribute to the department’s excellence.

The HealthCare Champion program at HaysMed gives patients and families the opportunity to recognize staff members who make a meaningful impact during their care. Being honored by those we serve is one of the highest compliments a healthcare professional can receive.

Congratulations to Jana on this well-deserved recognition!

Empowering Mothers Through Breastfeeding Support at HaysMed

August 6, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

August 1–7 marks World Breastfeeding Week, a global celebration of breastfeeding and its vital role in maternal and infant health. At HaysMed, this week is an opportunity to spotlight the exceptional care and resources available to mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey.

HaysMed’s Lactation Services team, comprised of International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants and Registered Nurses, provides both inpatient, outpatient, and phone support. From the moment a baby is born, mothers receive personalized guidance, with Birth Center nurses trained in at least 20 hours of breastfeeding education.

HaysMed is also proud to be a Baby-Friendly Hospital, recognized for implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. This designation reflects the hospital’s commitment to empowering mothers with the knowledge and confidence to nourish their babies naturally.

As a Baby-Friendly Hospital and a High 5 for Mom and Baby designated facility, HaysMed follows evidence-based practices to ensure breastfeeding success, including immediate skin-to-skin contact, exclusive breast milk feeding, and 24-hour rooming-in. These practices are reinforced by community support options to assist mothers to meet their feeding goals.

In addition, HaysMed serves as a Mothers’ Milk Depot Center collecting milk from approved donors. Once received, the donor milk is shipped to Mother’s Milk Bank in Colorado, where it is processed, pasteurized and shipped to infants in need across the country.  This initiative, in partnership with Mothers’ Milk Bank and Ellis County Breastfeeding Coalition, ensures that even the most vulnerable newborns receive the life-saving benefits of human milk.

To learn more or schedule a lactation consultation, call 785-623-5000 or visit HaysMed Birth Center.
