Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for City of Hays, Ellis County

January 22, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

For Immediate Release: January 22, 2025
Contact: Jill Bronaugh Jill.P.Bronaugh@ks.gov

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for City of Hays, Ellis County

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory
for the City of Hays public water supply system located in Ellis County. The advisory was issued because of a
waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure
may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

The Advisory remains in place for Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park pending laboratory results from
water samples collected from the mobile home park.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure
or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will
issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Drinking water samples collected from the City of Hays indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination
and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be
resolved.

For consumer questions, please contact the water system at: 785-628-7380 or you may call KDHE at
785-296-5514. For consumer information please visit our webpage: https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/468/Disruptionin-Water-Service.

Boil Water Advisory Issued for the City of Hays and Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park, Ellis County

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Hays public water supply system located in Ellis County. This advisory also includes customers of Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

  • Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
  • Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
  • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
  • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
  • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on January 21 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

For consumer questions, please contact the water system at 785-628-7380, or KDHE at 785-296-5514. For consumer information please visit KDHE’s PWS Consumer Information webpage: https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/468/Disruption-in-Water-Service

Restaurants and other food establishments that have questions about the impact of the boil water advisory on their business can contact the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s food safety & lodging program at kda.fsl@ks.gov or call 785-564-6767.

Winter Weather Safety Tips

January 15, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

During the recent statewide snowstorm on Jan. 4-5, HaysMed treated 25 injuries from ice-related falls—making it one of our busiest and most severe weekends of the season.

Dr. Nathan Smith from the HaysMed Emergency Department shared insights with the local media on the challenges we faced: “We definitely have lots of falls when there’s ice or snow outside, but this was even worse than our typical winter weather,” he said.

Some injuries, including hip fractures and a brain bleed, were particularly severe, highlighting the dangers of icy conditions. Most hip fracture patients were over 60, emphasizing the importance of caution for those with more fragile bones.

Dr. Smith’s Winter Safety Tips:

-Stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
-Plan ahead to avoid trips during hazardous weather.
-Wear shoes with good traction, dress in layers.
-Keep your hands free to help maintain balance.
-Hidden ice can linger, even after snowstorms, so take extra care while shoveling.

Let’s work together to stay safe as we face another round of cold temps and possible snow this weekend! Bundle up and avoid unnecessary risks. Stay safe!
