HaysMed Unveils the Most Up-to-Date MRI Technology in the Region

November 28, 2022/in All, HaysMed News, Imaging, Orthopedic Institute News/by devteam

Hays, KS – The latest in MRI scanning is now available at HaysMed.  The GE Signa Artist 70 cm bore was installed over a two-month period and began operating in late October.  HaysMed is the first in Western Kansas to offer patients this leading-edge technology.

The equipment combines the latest advancement in MRI with sophisticated engineering of a 1.5T wide bore system.  The wide bore system is more spacious providing more head room with plenty of space between the machine and your body even for larger patients. Many people who are claustrophobic and feel uncomfortable in traditional MRI machines feel much more comfortable in the wide bore machine.

“It is truly a versatile system built with the patient in mind.” Said Lisa Dinkel, Director of Imaging.  “It redefines the imaging experience with feet-first comfort options and scan capabilities that continue to push the conventional limits of MRI.”

New features include shorter scan times, less noise for a quieter environment, a more comfortable bed and improved sharpness and detail in the finished images.  The HaysMed Foundation purchased a new Cinema Vision system which new features such as Roku TV, streaming music and Bluetooth pairing for patients’ entertainment during certain MRI exams.

MRI uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create detailed images of organs and tissues in the body, helping providers diagnose disease and injury and begin the most effective course of treatment. MRI is the gold standard, particularly for investigating conditions that affect soft tissue.

The new MRI enhances the ability to diagnose and begin treatment on breast and prostate cancer earlier.  Diffusion technology improves the accuracy of identifying acute ischemic brain lesions in patients who experienced a stroke.

The new system also features magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) vascular imaging which gives the ability to specifically look at the body’s blood vessels and is used to diagnose and evaluate conditions such as aneurysms. Magnetic resonance venography (MRV) that can incorporate IV contrast dye to visualize the veins is also a component of the new MRI.  MRV assesses blood flow and detects detrimental abnormalities such as blood clots. Additional conditions this imaging technique could uncover are structural vein abnormalities, blood flow issues in the brain, and deep thrombosis in the veins.

In addition to the new system at the hospital,  the MRI at Hays Orthopedic Institute has been upgraded with new advanced features that will enhance images and allow for faster scan times.

“This all an investment in our community,” Dinkel said. “The new state-of-the-art MRI machine will make it easier for people to get high-quality scans close to home and get their results faster. Ensuring that our patients have access to high-quality medical imaging is essential to getting people the care they need when they need it.”

HaysMed Receives ACC Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Reaccreditation HaysMed provides necessary care, resources to patients with heart attack symptoms

September 13, 2022/in All, DeBakey Heart Institute News, HaysMed News, News/by devteam

Hays, KS — The American College of Cardiology has recognized HaysMed for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients with chest pain. HaysMed was awarded Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Primary PCI in August based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 730,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. The most common symptom of a heart attack for both men and women is chest pain or discomfort. However, women are more likely to have atypical symptoms. Other heart attack symptoms include, but are not limited to, tingling or discomfort in one or both arms, back, shoulder, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, cold sweat, unusual tiredness, heartburn-like feeling, nausea or vomiting, sudden dizziness and fainting.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is also known as coronary angioplasty. It is a non-surgical procedure that opens narrowed or blocked coronary arteries with a balloon to relieve symptoms of heart disease or reduce heart damage during or after a heart attack.

Hospitals that have earned ACC Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI have proven exceptional competency in treating patients with heart attack symptoms and have primary PCI available 24/7 every day of the year. As required to meet the criteria of the accreditation designation, they comply with standard Chest Pain Center protocols. These facilities also maintain a “No Diversion Policy” for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients.

“HaysMed has demonstrated its commitment to providing Western Kansas with excellent heart care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, FACC, chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board. “ACC Accreditation Services is proud to award HaysMed with Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI.”

Hospitals receiving Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI from the ACC must take part in a multi-faceted clinical process that involves: completing a gap analysis; examining variances of care, developing an action plan; a rigorous onsite review; and monitoring for sustained success. Improved methods and strategies of caring for patients include streamlining processes, implementing of guidelines and standards, and adopting best practices in the care of patients experiencing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, and other administrative staff that earnestly support the efforts leading to better patient education and improved patient outcomes.

“This reaccreditation validates that HaysMed is committed to the care of cardiovascular patients in Western Kansas.  Our multidisciplinary healthcare team is second to none”, said Brian Pfannenstiel, MSN, RN, Director of Critical Care/Chest Pain Coordinator

The ACC offers U.S. and international hospitals like HaysMed access to a comprehensive suite of cardiac accreditation services designed to optimize patient outcomes and improve hospital financial performance. These services are focused on all aspects of cardiac care, including emergency treatment of heart attacks.

HaysMed DeBakey Heart Institute Offers Minimally Invasive TAVR Heart Valve Replacement

August 23, 2022/in All, DeBakey Heart Institute News, HaysMed News, News/by devteam

Hays, KS – Patients who suffer from severe aortic stenosis, which is the narrowing of the heart’s aortic valve opening that restricts blood flow, now have a new option available at HaysMed. Dr. Niranjan Seshadri, Interventional Cardiologist, is performing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

TAVR is an advanced heart valve replacement procedure that offers new hope to patients who have aortic valve stenosis.

The TAVR procedure is a revolutionary new way to replace an aortic valve without open heart surgery or a large incision to the patient’s chest. Studies show patients who have received this new device not only live longer, but feel better, and significantly improve their quality of life.

“We are very pleased to offer this life saving procedure to replace a defective heart valve without our patient undergoing open-heart surgery.” said Steve Albright, Director of Cardiology, “We are the only hospital in Western Kansas to have the capability to perform this advanced procedure.”

During most procedures the team inserts a valve through a small cut in the patient’s upper leg. The valve is advanced on a balloon catheter through the artery toward the damaged valve where it is inflated.  The catheter is removed leaving the new aortic valve inside the old one.

“It’s very exciting for HaysMed to be able to offer this leading-edge cardiac care option and state-of-the-art technology to the community we serve,” said Albright. “We continue to grow our cardiac program and this milestone highlights our commitment to provide comprehensive cardiovascular services for our region.”

HaysMed Receives High 5 for Mom & Baby Premier Recognition

March 11, 2022/in All, HaysMed News, News, Nursing News, OB-GYN/by devteam

Hays, KS – HaysMed has continued its commitment to improving infant and maternal health by earning recognition through High 5 for Mom & Baby Premier, a program developed by the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates in Kansas.

High 5 for Mom & Baby Premier provides resources and a framework to help Kansas hospitals and birth facilities implement ten evidence-based practices proven to support successful breastfeeding, improving maternal and infant health outcomes while also reducing racial and ethnic health disparities.

To obtain High 5 for Mom & Baby Premier recognition, each facility is asked to complete a voluntary and self-reported evaluation and to follow all ten evidence-based practices to successful breastfeeding.

“Breastfeeding plays a crucial role in the overall health of babies and mothers,” stated Katie Schoenhoff, Director of Programs at the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund. “Following the ten High 5 for Mom & Baby practices demonstrates HaysMed’s commitment to infant and maternal health by helping moms successfully initiate and maintain breastfeeding.”

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), 60% of mothers stopped breastfeeding sooner than they planned. Some factors that influence how long or if a baby is breastfed include: hospital practices, education and encouragement, policies or support in the workplace, and access to community support – which is why High 5 for Mom & Baby facilities are committed to helping women breastfeed successfully, through staff trained in breastfeeding best practices and policies to help mothers meet their breastfeeding goals.

Along with the recognition of being named a High 5 for Mom & Baby Premier facility, HaysMed also receives ongoing education and training opportunities, support and resources through a community of delivery centers, and scholarship opportunities to further staff education.

“Breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits for both infants and mothers, and we’re honored to receive this recognition from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund for our efforts to support successful breastfeeding initiation and maintenance. As a facility committed to providing the very highest quality of care, we have found the High 5 practices and resources to not only improve health outcomes but also increase patient satisfaction,” said Terry Seik, VP of Patient Care.
