Chris Schumacher, RN, Honored with the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Patient Care at HaysMed’s Acute Care Unit

August 23, 2023/in All, News/by Jade Lemmon

Hays, KS — HaysMed proudly announces that Chris Schumacher, RN, a dedicated nurse on the Acute Care Unit, has been awarded the Daisy Award for her exceptional commitment to patient care and her positive impact on the lives of those she serves. The Daisy Award, renowned internationally, celebrates nurses who exemplify exceptional clinical expertise and compassionate care. Chris’s dedication and efforts have truly made a difference in the lives of her patients and their families.

The nomination for the Daisy Award came from a patient’s family member who wished to honor Chris Schumacher’s thoughtful care. The family member expressed, “I would like to nominate Chris Schumacher for the Daisy Nurse Award. Chris had a profound impact on my experience as I supported my loved one in the final weeks of their life.”

The family member continued, “Chris and the nurses helped me understand how to best support my loved one throughout the diagnostic procedures, labs, and cancer diagnosis. She helped me with understanding the terminology. While hospitalized, my loved one requested that my brother and a few of his band members come and sing because they loved singing and dancing.  I asked Chris if this would be possible, and by Friday of that week, the waiting room provided a backdrop for the live music. Although unable to physically dance, my loved one was able to escape the challenges they were facing and get lost in the music. Chris and the nurses helped us have ‘Our Last Dance. I will be forever grateful.'”

Terry Siek, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President for Patient Services at HaysMed, praised Chris Schumacher’s exceptional contributions, saying, “We congratulate Chris on receiving the Daisy Award. Her dedication and compassionate care exemplify the core values that define exceptional nursing at HaysMed. Nurses like Chris make a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families, and we are immensely proud of her achievement.”
