HaysMed Athletic Sports Injury Walk-In Clinic

October 15, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

The HaysMed Athletic Sports Injury Walk-In Clinic is available to athletes who need immediate care for injuries sustained during the week. Located at the Hays Orthopedic Clinic, 2500 Canterbury Drive, the clinic will operate every Monday from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM, offering availability for same-day or next-day appointments.

The clinic is designed to provide quick, efficient care for acute sports injuries, including concussions. Our team, led by Dr. Wally Walstrom, a board-certified sports medicine physician and Medical Director of the clinic, is dedicated to ensuring that athletes receive timely, expert attention. Dr. Walstrom, who is full-time at the Hays Orthopedic Clinic, has increased his availability to accommodate injured athletes.

“At the clinic, any injury that concerns a parent, coach, or athlete can be evaluated promptly,” says Dr. Walstrom. The Athletic Sports Injury Walk-In Clinic offers an alternative to visiting the emergency department or waiting for a scheduled appointment, allowing athletes to be seen and treated quickly but also working in new injuries daily.

Our clinic is equipped with digital X-ray services, and if necessary, we can initiate the process for an MRI. This streamlined approach ensures that athletes receive a comprehensive evaluation and leave with a clear recovery plan, including any needed equipment like crutches or knee braces.

For those requiring rehabilitation, sports-specific programs are available at the Outpatient Rehab Center, conveniently located just steps away from the Hays Orthopedic Clinic. Our goal is to help athletes in our community start their recovery process sooner, enabling a safer and quicker return to their sport.

HaysMed employs another 5-10 sports trainers who assist in providing on-site coverage for Fort Hays State University athletics, including football and men’s and women’s basketball, as well as local area schools including Hays High School, Ellis, Victoria, TMP, LaCrosse and the Hays Larks.

“The Athletic Sports Injury Walk-In Clinic plays a crucial role in taking care of our community’s young athletes,” Dr. Walstrom adds. “By starting their recovery process faster, we help them safely return to their sport sooner.”

HaysMed Mammography Department Receives Recertification

October 15, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

Cheers to the HaysMed Mammography Department!

HaysMed is thrilled to announce that the Mammography Department has successfully received MQSA recertification! This yearly inspection rigorously examines our personnel, equipment, and operations to ensure we meet the highest standards set by the FDA.

Why is this important?

MQSA stands for the Mammography Quality Standards Act. This U.S. federal law, sets national quality standards for mammography, including the accreditation, certification, and inspection of facilities that perform mammography. The goal is to ensure that all women have access to quality mammography for the detection of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. The program is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Not only do we undergo these thorough annual inspections for MQSA certification, but we are also currently navigating the ACR accreditation process, which occurs every three years. This year, both critical evaluations coincide, doubling our efforts to maintain our commitment to quality and safety.

Achieving this certification is a testament to our team’s hard work and dedication to providing top-notch care. Thank you to all of the Associates who’s efforts earned HaysMed another year of Mammography excellence!

The HaysMed Mammography Department includes Leah Rhoades, Laura McCarter, Brandy Huser, Laura Vonlintel, Andrea Hoffman, and Audra Leiker.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 14, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, #1Thing Can Make All the Difference

Domestic violence impacts millions of people each year, but it can be prevented. It requires the collective voice and power of individuals, families, institutions, and systems – each whose “one thing” adds a valuable and powerful component to transforming our communities.

That is why the October, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), HaysMed is asking “What is the #1Thing you can do to end domestic violence?”

“Many people care and understand that domestic violence is a serious public health problem. They want to do something but believe their actions can’t make a difference,” said Trisha Haskell, HaysMed Forensic Program Coordinator. “It feels overwhelming. But change can start with only #1Thing. Imagine if all 21,000+ individuals in the Hays area each commit to doing just #1Thing to stop domestic violence. We could really see some serious social transformation.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

“Right here in Hays, HaysMed has already provided services to numerous victims of abuse and violence this year,” added Cammie Townley, HaysMed Trauma Program Manager. “That is why we need everyone – advocates, medical professionals, educators, survivors, researchers, policy makers, law enforcement officers, business owners, students, and more, to do #1Thing to stop domestic violence here in Hays.

#1Thing you could do to address domestic violence:

  • Be a caring and consistent adult in the life of a child
  • Talk to loved ones about violence and oppression
  • Create a culture of consent in your home
  • Use social media to raise awareness among your peers organizations to establish
  • Reach out to my local domestic violence program to learn how you can help
  • Listen to and validate a survivor of trauma

HaysMed’s Forensic Program has proven to be an essential resource in the region, ensuring that those affected by violence receive the support they need. The program works in close collaboration with various community partners to provide comprehensive care, thereby making a positive impact on the well-being of the local population.

This October join HaysMed as we honor those whose lives were taken by domestic violence, celebrate the tremendous progress victim advocates have made over the years, and connect with one another with a true sense of unity to end domestic violence.
