HaysMed Performs First Pulse Field Ablation Procedure

May 20, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed proudly announces the successful completion of its first Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) procedure, performed on May 14, 2025, by Dr. Jacob Morgan, Electrophysiologist and Cardiologist, in collaboration with the HaysMed Catheterization Laboratory team.

This milestone marks a significant advancement in cardiac care for the region, as HaysMed becomes one of the first facilities in western Kansas to utilize the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System- a newly FDA-approved technology for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

PFA represents a next-generation approach to cardiac ablation. Unlike traditional thermal ablation methods that use extreme heat or cold to destroy problematic heart tissue, the FARAPULSE system employs non-thermal, tissue-selective electric fields. This innovation minimizes the risk of damage to surrounding structures while maintaining high efficacy in treating AFib.

“Patients are increasingly aware of new treatment options like PFA,” said Dr. Morgan. “We are pleased to offer this cutting-edge technology to our community. The incidence of atrial fibrillation continues to rise, and having access to safer, faster, and more effective therapies allows us to improve outcomes and expand care to more patients.”

According to Boston Scientific, the FARAPULSE PFA System has demonstrated comparable effectiveness to traditional radiofrequency ablation, with added benefits of reduced procedure time and enhanced safety. The system has been used successfully worldwide and is now available in the U.S. following regulatory approval.

“Introducing this technology at HaysMed is a major step forward for cardiac care in our region,” Dr. Morgan added. “We are excited to bring this innovation to patients in Hays and across western Kansas.”

To learn more about how the FARAPULSE PFA System works, including a visual overview of the procedure, please watch the video provided by Boston Scientific: Deep Dive into FARAPULSE™: PFA System Workflow Animation.

HaysMed Celebrates First Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) in New Hybrid Operating Room

May 16, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed and the DeBakey Heart Institute are proud to announce the successful completion of its first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure within the hospital’s newly opened hybrid operating room. This achievement marks a significant advancement in cardiac care for the region and highlights the hospital’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art technology and treatment options to patients in western Kansas.

The TAVR procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team including Dr. Travis Haneke, Interventional Cardiologist; Dr. Raja Gopaldas, Cardiothoracic Surgeon; and supported by Carmen Keller, Cardiovascular OR/Cath Lab Manager, along with the specialized cath lab and operating room staff. Also pictured in the commemorative photo is Justin Rust from Edwards Lifesciences, a key partner in the implementation of this advanced technology.

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure used to replace a narrowed aortic valve without the need for open-heart surgery. This innovative approach offers patients a shorter recovery time, reduced risk of complications, and improved overall outcomes.

The successful completion of this procedure in the hybrid OR underscores HaysMed’s dedication to clinical excellence and innovation. By integrating advanced imaging capabilities with surgical functionality, the hybrid operating room enables complex cardiovascular procedures to be performed with greater precision and efficiency.

With this milestone, HaysMed continues to elevate the standard of cardiac care, ensuring that patients across western Kansas and the region, have access to the latest life-saving technologies close to home.

HaysMed is thrilled to recognize Emma Dinkel, Patient Care Technician in the Progressive Care Unit, as the very first recipient of the BEE Award. This special honor was presented during National Hospital Week, making the celebration even more meaningful.

Just as a daisy depends on the bee to thrive, our nurses rely on the dedication and teamwork of non-nursing healthcare professionals to provide exceptional patient care. To recognize this vital collaboration, HaysMed created the Being Excellent Everyday (BEE) Award, honoring outstanding contributions from non-nursing team members.

Emma was nominated by a patient’s family member, who shared:

Emma’s coworkers also know that when Emma is working,  she is on the move from start to finish taking the very best care of everyone on the Progressive Care Unit.”

Joben Rieth, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at HaysMed also shared his enthusiasm for the award and Emma’s recognition:

“The BEE Award is a meaningful way to celebrate the incredible work of our non-nursing team members, who are essential to delivering high-quality care. Emma exemplifies the spirit of this award- her dedication, compassion, and teamwork make a lasting impact on our patients and staff. We are thrilled to honor her as our first recipient.”

Emma shared the following after receiving the award:

“What a wonderful surprise this morning-truly made my whole week! I’m so grateful to be part of such an incredible team and unit. Working on PCU has not only been a rewarding experience, but also such a valuable part of my growth as I continue my nursing school journey.

“The support and knowledge I’ve gained has helped shape who I am in my career and I couldn’t be more thankful!”

Patients, families, and Associates are encouraged to nominate non-nursing Associates who go above and beyond in their roles. Recipients are selected by a HaysMed committee and honored with a BEE Award pin, a certificate of excellence, and a bag of goodies.

HaysMed Names 2025 DAISY Award Winners for Extraordinary Nursing Care

May 13, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

In celebration of the extraordinary care and compassion nurses provide every day, HaysMed proudly announced the recipients of this year’s DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This prestigious honor is part of a nationwide program that recognizes nurses who go above and beyond in delivering exceptional patient care.

The 2025 DAISY Award recipients truly embody the compassion, clinical excellence, and dedication that define nursing at HaysMed. Presented during National Nurses Week, these awards highlight the inspiring work of our newest honorees and the meaningful difference they make in the lives of their patients and colleagues.

Joben Rieth, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President for Patient Services at HaysMed, shared his appreciation: “It’s truly a privilege to recognize Amber Thompson, Lea Staab, and Kaylyn Bustillos with the DAISY Award. These incredible nurses represent the very best of what it means to care—with compassion, skill, and a deep commitment to their patients and teams. Watching them make a difference every day is inspiring, and we’re so proud to celebrate their dedication and heart.”

Meet the HaysMed 2025 DAISY Award Honorees:

Amber Thompson, RN – Surgical Floor

Amber was nominated by a patient’s family. Here is what they said:

“Amber is an amazing nurse from the moment we got here up to the minute we left. She explained what was happening and described what to expect and what the process would be every step of the way. It felt like she was part of the family and took extra time to ensure we were informed that our loved one was taken care of. Can’t say enough good things about her and the staff at HaysMed. Great experience in a very stressful and emotional environment.”

Lea Staab, RN- Special Nursing Services/Vascular Access

Lea was nominated by a patient, here is what they said:

“I have had Lea before as she has assisted me before in the Special Nursing Services at Hays Medical Center in Hays. I have always enjoyed her presence and company while she performed these services. I think the small kind gestures by Lea, goes along way not just being a great nurse, but a great person. I am one who never forgets when people go out of their way to help me. I also think Hays Medical Center should be grateful to have a nurse like Lea.”

Kaylyn Bustillos, RN- Intensive Care Unit

Kaylyn was nominated by a patient’s family. Here is what they said:

“My father is in the ICU at Hays Medical Center. Its been a yo-yo ride with highs and lows every single day. When we were told they were going to put him on ventilator the family was terrified and heart broken. We were scared, we were confused, and had questions. Within the very first minutes of meeting Kaylyn our fears of care were gone. She was patient with us, she was confident in her abilities, she was caring, she was sympathetic to our situation. Over the next day or so I observed her as she cared for my dad. We saw her talking to him, comforting him, making sure to adjust his position, etc. all while not knowing she was being watched. “Integrity is always doing the right thing even when nobody is watching.” We are very blessed and grateful for her, her skills, her over, and her integrity. Thank you Kaylyn… From my family and from our deepest hearts. Wishing you the very best… You deserve it!”

HaysMed is proud to be a DAISY Award Hospital Partner, recognizing one of our nurses with this special honor. If you feel that a nurse has exemplified the kind of nurse that our patients, their families, and our staff recognize as an outstanding role model in our community, please complete the following form to nominate this nurse for the award.

Nurse’s Week Spotlight Series: 20+ Years of Experience

May 6, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

Happy 2025 Nurse’s Week from HaysMed! At HaysMed, we are excited to celebrate the wisdom, humor, and dedication of our most tenured and experienced nurses with an exclusive Nurses Week Interview series: 20+ Years of Experience.

Doris Rack, HaysMed NICU

After 20+ Years what still makes you smile every shift?

“Taking care of the babies in NICU/Birthing Center and working with their parents makes me smile. I also love working with my peers and the physicians. We have a great team!”

How Has Nursing Changed Over the Years?

“I think nursing has changed the most with modern technology. Computers have transformed how we chart, perform procedures such as robotic surgery, conduct x-rays, calculate medication doses, research, and use simulation labs. All of this has improved patient safety and outcomes.”

Carey Lewis, HaysMed Operating Room RN

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned on the job?

“The most interesting thing I have learned on the job and value is the saying “don’t treat the monitor, treat the patient” or “don’t judge a book by its cover”. So many patients appear healthy on the outside but are struggling with disease and personal hardship on the inside. Always assess all aspects, not what we physically see.”

What’s your favorite memory from nursing school?

“I have many memories from Nursing School and many of those memories always bring my classmates, Instructors and the many mentors to mind. I made a lot of lasting friendships in Nursing School and cherish those made to this day.”

Regina Borthwick, HaysMed Patient Quality Services Executive Director

What advice would you give to your younger nurse self?

“Change roles so you get out of your comfort zone and re-challenge yourself.”

How do you stay passionate about nursing after all these years?

“My passion comes from the heart of wanting to help people.”

Joyce Mattison, HaysMed Clinical Documentation Specialist

What’s the most rewarding part of being a nurse for over 20 years?

“I have had many different opportunities to make a difference at Haysmed. I have been at the bedside, in the classroom with new nurses, and helping patients while doing patient education. I have lead many different nursing units, departments and clinics.  I have tried to make each area I worked a better place for patients and staff. My motto has always been the patient is the center of all we do. It has been rewarding to see the advancements made in healthcare since I began my career and also what care we provide at HaysMed. We make a difference for the patients and their families in western Kansas. I have always been proud to play a part of the changes that have happened during this time.  The merger of the two hospitals, different construction projects. I got to be in a trailer with 20 of my work friends when I was in IT as a clinical analyst, it was cozy but we had a great team and lots of fun. Teaching nurses about the computer system when they didn’t have computers at home, this was in the late 1990s, was fun, nurses didn’t think we could do without paper charting and now nurses wouldn’t go back to that time.

It has been fun helping nurses grow in their careers, from nursing school to be leaders in the hospital, it is rewarding to know I played a small part in their development and success.”

If you had a theme song that played every time you walked into a patient’s room, what would it be?

“My career at HaysMed has taken me from the bedside to many other areas of the hospital. Each role I played, I feel I did as a mentor, cheerleader, and motivator. So Katy Perry’s song “Roar” would summarize this. My time as a bedside nurse working with Pediatric patients, I always needed to be upbeat and friendly as kids didn’t always appreciate being in the hospital with strangers. In my education role, I helped lots of new nurses to begin their careers and being a mentor was an important part of this. In my manager role, being a motivator for staff to help everyone attain the goals for the patients, nursing units and hospital takes an upbeat attitude. This song would be a great one to play to help all the roles I have held during my  career.”

Gayla Binder, RN

What’s one skill you think every nurse should have?

“While it is not a technical skill, I think having empathy is the most important quality a nurse can have. Being able to relate to your patient and their loved ones will make a patient feel more satisfied with the care they receive.”

What’s your favorite way to bond with your colleagues?

“Whether it is at work or outside of work, I enjoy listening to stories about my coworkers’ children.  Most of my career was spent in Pediatric nursing. I find children fascinating and entertaining”

Susan Little, RN

What’s something about nursing that hasn’t changed at all in 20 years?
“One thing that has never changed in the many years that I have been a hospital bedside nurse is that fact that we never close so I have spent many holidays with co workers and patients!”

What’s one lesson every nurse should learn in their first year?
“I think that every new nurse should learn that a nursing career is not just about a paycheck but is about caring for others.   You will be presented with challenges but learn to be part of a team that includes your patients and co workers and you can face any challenge.”

Join us in celebrating our incredible nurses this week! Their dedication and hard work are the heart of HaysMed, and we are grateful for their unwavering commitment to patient care.

Emergency Department Distress System Funded

May 1, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

Recent studies and national events have shown there is an increasing prevalence of violence towards healthcare workers. Emergency Department nurses are particularly vulnerable to workplace violence with up 70% reporting having experienced physical and/or verbal assault. HaysMed is no exception to this disturbing trend.

Guests at the HaysMed Foundation Benefit Gala funded the purchase of a nurse distress system that will be installed in the Emergency Department. Thanks to generous $20,000 matching gift offers from Joe and Linda Glassman/Glassman Corp. and the Hadley Foundation, $65,000 was raised to fund this important project. The new system will allow emergency department nurses to communicate directly with security and the rest of the department via a device attached to their ID-badge when they need emergency assistance while providing patient care.

“Not only will this system help protect our staff, but it will also allow us to continue providing the highest quality emergency care that our community deserves. We appreciate the support of our community in helping raise the necessary funds for the installation of this system in our Emergency Department,” said Dr. Aaron Pfeifer, HaysMed Emergency Physician.
