Hospice and Palliative Care Program Receives 5-Star Rating from CMS

June 27, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed is pleased to announce that its Hospice and Palliative Care program has once again been awarded a 5-star rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), as published on the official federal healthcare comparison platform, Medicare.gov. This distinction represents the highest level of quality recognition available for hospice care providers in the United States.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, oversees the Medicare.gov Care Compare tool, which evaluates and reports on the quality of care delivered by healthcare providers nationwide. The 5-star rating reflects HaysMed’s continued excellence in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals facing terminal illnesses.

Sarah Dreiling, RN, Director of Clinical Care at HaysMed, expressed her pride in the team’s achievement, “This recognition is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our hospice nurses, physicians, social worker, pastoral care, and volunteers. Their commitment to providing comfort, dignity, and support to patients and their families is truly exceptional.”

Dr. Kayla Gray, DO, Medical Director for Hospice, added,  “We are honored to receive this distinction once again. Our team is deeply committed to ensuring that every patient receives the highest standard of care during life’s most vulnerable moments.”

According to the CMS rating, hospice services are designed to support patients with terminal diagnoses such as cancer, dementia, stroke, heart disease, and respiratory conditions. Medicare.gov encourages families to consider both the types of conditions treated and the quality-of-care ratings when selecting a hospice provider.

Dr. Pfeifer Named HealthCare Champion for Exceptional Kindness

June 20, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

At HaysMed, we believe that extraordinary care goes beyond medicine and Dr. Aaron Pfeifer, Medical Director of Emergency Services exemplifies that spirit. Recently honored as the newest HealthCare Champion, Dr. Pfeifer transformed a stressful emergency room visit into a moment of comfort, connection, and kindness for a young patient and his family. His ability to blend clinical excellence with genuine compassion left a lasting impression that turned fear into smiles and worry into gratitude.

The family recounted their experience:

“I just want to take a moment to recognize Dr. Pfeifer for the incredible care he gave our son during a recent ER visit. He came in with GI issues and was clearly not himself—quiet, in pain, and just not the energetic kid we know. He usually doesn’t complain when he’s sick, so we were concerned it could be something serious.

Dr. Pfeifer took great care of him and gave him IV meds that helped really quickly. Pretty textbook, standard treatment. But more than that, he made sure our son felt safe and seen once he started feeling better. When he perked up, Dr. Pfeifer chatted with him about Mario, asked about his favorite Gatorade flavor, and even talked about his stethoscope—something he was excited to say he had one of at home too. It was personal, thoughtful, and exactly what he needed in that moment.

Instead of being scared of the hospital or the IV, he remembers that he went in feeling horrible and left talking about Mario. He remembers the fun conversation, not the pain or the fear—which is a big deal when you’re six. And when we were discharged, Dr. Pfeifer even sent him home with a blue Gatorade (his favorite) and a handwritten note. Turns out, blue Gatorades and handwritten notes can change everything. The best medicine is kindness, and Dr. Pfeifer gave it generously. He hasn’t stopped talking about him since. What started as a stressful night turned into something he remembers with a smile. As a mom, I’ll never forget how Dr. Pfeifer turned a hard situation into a kind, positive memory for our son.”

The HealthCare Champion program at HaysMed allows patients and their families to recognize those who made a special impact during their stay. There is no higher compliment than being acknowledged by a patient or family for exceptional care.

Introducing Convenient Billing Notifications for HaysMed Patients

March 11, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/

At HaysMed, we’re dedicated to continually improving your patient experience through enhanced communication and service options. We are pleased to introduce a new billing notification system, launching this month, designed to streamline how you receive and manage your billing information.

This system features an innovative call service that automatically contacts patients to notify them of new bills and provides essential payment details. Our goal is to offer timely, convenient access to your billing information, ensuring you’re always up to date.

Recognizing our patients’ diverse preferences, we’ve also expanded the methods through which you can receive these statement notifications. Beyond the traditional paper notices, you now have the option to get notifications via email or text messages. This digital approach not only speeds up the process but is also eco-friendly and enhances accessibility. You can update your preferences for receiving these notifications through your online payment webpage- haysmed.com/payment .

This change allows you the flexibility to choose your preferred notification method, ensuring you receive your billing information in the way that works best for you. Initially, you will receive an email and text notification; if unopened after a few days, we will send a paper version. Upon receiving the first email, you will also have the option to opt out of digital communications if desired.

Please note that final statements are only issued through postal mail.

We believe these new features will significantly enhance your interaction with HaysMed, making it easier to manage your billing needs. Thank you for trusting HaysMed with your healthcare and stay tuned for further updates.

For assistance please contact our support team at 785-623-5100. HaysMed is here to help!

CHI Launches Cutting-Edge AI Fitness Technology with Fit-X Partnership

June 6, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

The Center for Health Improvement (CHI) at HaysMed is leading the charge in fitness innovation by becoming the first pilot site in the United States to introduce Fit-X, an AI-powered personal training system. As one of the few locations nationwide to debut this groundbreaking technology, CHI is offering its members a smarter, safer, and more personalized workout experience.

Fit-X, a company with roots in the fitness industry dating back to 1997, has evolved with the times by integrating advanced AI and sensor technology into traditional strength training equipment. Each machine is equipped with dual sensors that track form, speed, weights lifted and range of motion in real time. This data is used to ensure your workout is both effective and safe.

Personalized Fitness at Your Fingertips

The Fit-X app is the centerpiece of this new system. It allows users to input their unique workout goals and constraints such as recent injuries and then creates workout plans accordingly. Whether you’re managing weight, recovering from a knee replacement, or just starting out, the app tailors workouts to each individual’s goals, physical condition, and experience level.

After each session, users receive an AI-generated summary detailing the muscle groups targeted and progress toward their goals. The app also adapts future workouts based on past performance and user feedback, eliminating guesswork and maximizing results.

Comprehensive Tracking and Flexibility

Even activities outside the gym can be logged manually into the app. For example, if you walk to CHI for your workout, you can enter that cardio session to get a complete picture of your fitness efforts, all in one place.

According to Stephanie Howie, Director of CHI, “We’re thrilled to be the first pilot location in the country for Fit-X. This is a fantastic opportunity for our members and the Hays community. We also offer personal training sessions to help members get started.”

A quick demo, a big impact! Tom from Fit-X shows Kyle just how user-friendly and powerful the Fit-X app really is.

Why Strength Training Matters

Despite its many benefits, such as improving bone density, supporting weight management, enhancing cardiovascular health, and maintaining independence with age, strength training remains underutilized. According to Fit-X, less than one-third of gym-goers and only 14% of older adults incorporate it into their routines.

Fit-X aims to change that by making strength training more accessible, intuitive, and results-driven. With real-time coaching, automatic weight adjustments, and an average of 50–75% strength gains in just three months, users can expect faster progress with fewer injuries.

Getting Started

Ready to experience the future of fitness? Becoming a member at the Center for Health Improvement (CHI) is your first step toward accessing the innovative Fit-X technology. CHI staff are here to walk you through the setup process and help you get the most out of your personalized fitness journey.

HaysMed Earns National Recognition for Zero CLABSI Rate

June 4, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed is one of only a handful of hospitals in Kansas that recently earned a zero-percent rating for central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI).

This is a serious infection that happens after germs enter the bloodstream through a central line – a catheter placed in a large vein, explained Joben Rieth, HaysMed Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services.

“HaysMed is one of only five hospitals in the state and 339 in the country to earn this recognition,” Rieth said. “We accomplished this because we work as a team, from the bedside staff to our housekeepers. It comes down to vigilance, teamwork and doing what is right for the safety of our patients.

“Since infection can lead to longer hospital stays and even life-threatening situations, we do all we can to protect our patients from harm during their stay with us.”

Justin Helberg, MD, Medical Director of the HaysMed hospitalist group, said this zero-percent rating is “a reflection on the amazing work done by the vascular-access team and bedside nurses.”

The vascular-access team has implemented several processes with the goal of decreasing clinical variability and improving the sterile process, Dr. Helberg noted.

“In addition, bedside nurses monitor the patient’s access sites and focus on hygiene to ensure possible concerns are addressed early and appropriately,” Dr. Helberg commented. “This focus on infectious prevention has helped us keep our patients safe and our team members safe, while improving the quality of care we provide at HaysMed.”

Regina Borthwick, HaysMed Patient Quality Services Executive Director, reflected the significance of the zero-percent CLABSI rating: “Achieving a zero-percent CLABSI rate is not just a statistic, it’s a reflection of our commitment to excellence in care. At HaysMed, every process, every precaution, and every person play a role in protecting our patients. We are incredibly proud to be among the few hospitals in Kansas and the nation to reach this milestone.”

Becker’s Hospital Review awarded the zero-percent rating, which is based on the healthcare-associated infections data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

This data, which was updated April 30, includes performance data for five types of infections collected through the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network, according to a Becker’s news release.

The measures show how often hospitalized patients contract infections during an inpatient stay compared to similar hospitals, the release says. The measures apply to all patients treated in acute-care hospitals.

This includes adults and children, as well as those in neonatal care; it applies to Medicare and non-Medicare patients.
