Stroke Awareness Month Presentation for Hays Elementary Class

May 23, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

May is American Stroke Awareness Month and National Nurses Week—a perfect time to celebrate lifesaving knowledge and the nurses who share it.

Katelyn, Inpatient Rehabilitation nursing supervisor and stroke program manager, along with her husband Michael, clinical documentation integrity specialist in the Continuing Care department, visited their daughter’s third-grade class to teach students how to be real-life heroes. They shared how to recognize the signs of strokes and heart attacks and how to call 911 in an emergency—because it’s never too early to learn how to save a life.

Also supporting the effort but not pictured was Brian Pfannenstiel, Director of Critical Care, who joined the classroom presentation.

HaysMed Performs First Pulse Field Ablation Procedure

May 20, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed proudly announces the successful completion of its first Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) procedure, performed on May 14, 2025, by Dr. Jacob Morgan, Electrophysiologist and Cardiologist, in collaboration with the HaysMed Catheterization Laboratory team.

This milestone marks a significant advancement in cardiac care for the region, as HaysMed becomes one of the first facilities in western Kansas to utilize the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System- a newly FDA-approved technology for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

PFA represents a next-generation approach to cardiac ablation. Unlike traditional thermal ablation methods that use extreme heat or cold to destroy problematic heart tissue, the FARAPULSE system employs non-thermal, tissue-selective electric fields. This innovation minimizes the risk of damage to surrounding structures while maintaining high efficacy in treating AFib.

“Patients are increasingly aware of new treatment options like PFA,” said Dr. Morgan. “We are pleased to offer this cutting-edge technology to our community. The incidence of atrial fibrillation continues to rise, and having access to safer, faster, and more effective therapies allows us to improve outcomes and expand care to more patients.”

According to Boston Scientific, the FARAPULSE PFA System has demonstrated comparable effectiveness to traditional radiofrequency ablation, with added benefits of reduced procedure time and enhanced safety. The system has been used successfully worldwide and is now available in the U.S. following regulatory approval.

“Introducing this technology at HaysMed is a major step forward for cardiac care in our region,” Dr. Morgan added. “We are excited to bring this innovation to patients in Hays and across western Kansas.”

To learn more about how the FARAPULSE PFA System works, including a visual overview of the procedure, please watch the video provided by Boston Scientific: Deep Dive into FARAPULSE™: PFA System Workflow Animation.

HaysMed Celebrates First Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) in New Hybrid Operating Room

May 16, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed and the DeBakey Heart Institute are proud to announce the successful completion of its first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure within the hospital’s newly opened hybrid operating room. This achievement marks a significant advancement in cardiac care for the region and highlights the hospital’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art technology and treatment options to patients in western Kansas.

The TAVR procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team including Dr. Travis Haneke, Interventional Cardiologist; Dr. Raja Gopaldas, Cardiothoracic Surgeon; and supported by Carmen Keller, Cardiovascular OR/Cath Lab Manager, along with the specialized cath lab and operating room staff. Also pictured in the commemorative photo is Justin Rust from Edwards Lifesciences, a key partner in the implementation of this advanced technology.

May 16, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed is thrilled to recognize Emma Dinkel, Patient Care Technician in the Progressive Care Unit, as the very first recipient of the BEE Award. This special honor was presented during National Hospital Week, making the celebration even more meaningful.

Just as a daisy depends on the bee to thrive, our nurses rely on the dedication and teamwork of non-nursing healthcare professionals to provide exceptional patient care. To recognize this vital collaboration, HaysMed created the Being Excellent Everyday (BEE) Award, honoring outstanding contributions from non-nursing team members.

Emma was nominated by a patient’s family member, who shared:

“I got to know Emma and was very impressed with her work ethic. Emma is going to make a wonderful nurse; I loved her kindness and strong character. Emma is a rising star—her light shines from her to others, her face says it all. She is a very kind and caring young person with a bright future. Good luck.”

From left to right: Joben Rieth, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, Emma Dinkel, and Jana Zeller, Manager of Professional Development.

Emma’s supervisor, Jana Zeller, Manager of Professional Development, expressed her excitement in recognizing Emma:

“Emma is one of the hardest working, most compassionate people I know. When Emma shows up for work, she is ready to go. She is always looking at ways we can improve and shares these with me regularly. Emma’s patients she cares for as a PCT always have wonderful things to say about her, and the cares she provides. Emma’s coworkers also know that when Emma is working,  she is on the move from start to finish taking the very best care of everyone on the Progressive Care Unit.”

Joben Rieth, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at HaysMed also shared his enthusiasm for the award and Emma’s recognition:

“The BEE Award is a meaningful way to celebrate the incredible work of our non-nursing team members, who are essential to delivering high-quality care. Emma exemplifies the spirit of this award- her dedication, compassion, and teamwork make a lasting impact on our patients and staff. We are thrilled to honor her as our first recipient.”

Emma shared the following after receiving the award:

“What a wonderful surprise this morning-truly made my whole week! I’m so grateful to be part of such an incredible team and unit. Working on PCU has not only been a rewarding experience, but also such a valuable part of my growth as I continue my nursing school journey.

“The support and knowledge I’ve gained has helped shape who I am in my career and I couldn’t be more thankful!”

Patients, families, and Associates are encouraged to nominate non-nursing Associates who go above and beyond in their roles. Recipients are selected by a HaysMed committee and honored with a BEE Award pin, a certificate of excellence, and a bag of goodies.
