The Nightingale Experience: Inspiring Future Nurses

January 28, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

On November 11, Fort Hays State University (FHSU) and Hays Medical Center (HaysMed) concluded their 2024 Nightingale Experience series with an event designed to spark high school sophomores’ and juniors’ interest in nursing careers. This final session, prior to the year’s end, welcomed eight students, providing them with a unique insight into the healthcare field.

Named after Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, the Nightingale Experience aims to introduce young aspirants to both the nursing profession and college life. The day-long event splits into two informative sessions focusing on educational and practical aspects of nursing.

The morning begins at FHSU, where nursing faculty members guide students through the university’s curriculum. Participants receive a tour of classrooms and the state-of-the-art simulation lab, which plays a crucial role in their training as future nurses. This firsthand look at the academic environment helps demystify the college experience and underlines the rigorous preparation involved in a nursing career.

In the afternoon, the venue shifts to HaysMed, where the students get a taste of a nurse’s daily life. They rotate through various units such as the Cath Lab, Critical Care Progressive Unit (CPCU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Operating Room (OR), Special Nurse Services, Emergency Room (ER), Medical Oncology, Surgical, and Acute Care departments. Shadowing professional nurses, the participants learn about the challenges and rewards of different nursing specialties.

Special recognition is due to the FHSU nursing faculty and the HaysMed education department team, along with the various clinical units that generously shared their time and expertise to make this event a success. Their commitment greatly enhances the educational experience, providing invaluable real-world insights to the students.

The Nightingale Experience not only offers a comprehensive overview of the nursing field but also inspires students to consider a profession that is as demanding as it is rewarding. By providing these young individuals with exposure to real-world clinical settings and educational pathways, the program aims to cultivate the next generation of healthcare heroes.

For more information, visit FHSU’s Nightingale Experience page.

HaysMed Attends 2025 KHA Advocacy Day

January 28, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

Developments from Topeka: KHA Advocacy Day

Last week, HaysMed was honored to represent our region at the Kansas Hospital Association (KHA) 2025 Advocacy Day in Topeka. Alongside over 130 hospital leaders, HaysMed leaders engaged with state officials to advocate for critical health care policies, underscoring our commitment to the health and economic prosperity of our Kansas communities.

The event highlighted speeches from prominent figures, including Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt and other key state officials. These discussions centered on the critical role hospitals play in the health care and economic sectors, addressing vital issues such as financial stability, workforce development, access to care, and reducing administrative burdens from insurance companies.

The Advocacy Day also offered a chance for direct discussions with legislators. The KHA Board met to discuss state and federal advocacy efforts, and also reviewed a new economic impact study of health care in Kansas.

For further details on the KHA Advocacy Day, we encourage you to read KHA President Chad Austin’s insightful article, “President’s Perspective – KHA Members Gather in Topeka to Advocate on Health Care Policies.”

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved for their efforts in amplifying our collective voice. Together, we continue to drive advancements in health care for all Kansans.

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for City of Hays, Ellis County

January 22, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

For Immediate Release: January 22, 2025
Contact: Jill Bronaugh Jill.P.Bronaugh@ks.gov

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for City of Hays, Ellis County

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory
for the City of Hays public water supply system located in Ellis County. The advisory was issued because of a
waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure
may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

The Advisory remains in place for Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park pending laboratory results from
water samples collected from the mobile home park.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure
or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will
issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Drinking water samples collected from the City of Hays indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination
and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be
resolved.

For consumer questions, please contact the water system at: 785-628-7380 or you may call KDHE at
785-296-5514. For consumer information please visit our webpage: https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/468/Disruptionin-Water-Service.

Boil Water Advisory Issued for the City of Hays and Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park, Ellis County

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Hays public water supply system located in Ellis County. This advisory also includes customers of Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

  • Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
  • Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
  • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
  • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
  • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on January 21 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

For consumer questions, please contact the water system at 785-628-7380, or KDHE at 785-296-5514. For consumer information please visit KDHE’s PWS Consumer Information webpage: https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/468/Disruption-in-Water-Service

Restaurants and other food establishments that have questions about the impact of the boil water advisory on their business can contact the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s food safety & lodging program at kda.fsl@ks.gov or call 785-564-6767.
