“Pink Night” Raises Funds for HaysMed Breast Care Center

November 11, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

The Smoky Hill Country Club recently hosted its 7th annual “Pink Night” golf tournament, bringing together women golfers from across the region to support a vital cause. The event, which saw participation from surrounding women’s golf courses, raised funds for the HaysMed Breast Care Center.

Golfers from Ellis Golf Course, both Hays courses—The Fort and Smoky Hill Country Club—and Russell, joined the event, which has become a cherished tradition. Participants do not have to be members of these local courses, allowing anyone who wants to support the cause to join in the fun. Traditionally, “Pink Night” sees between 50 to 90 golfers come together for a friendly nine-hole scramble.

The evening included a raffle, with all proceeds directed to the Breast Care Center. Over the past seven years, “Pink Night” has successfully raised more than $25,000 for HaysMed, helping support breast cancer patients in the community.

During the event, Sarah Fischer, the HaysMed Breast Health Clinical Navigator, provided an update on the Breast Care Center’s efforts and introduced the new pink robes that patients are now utilizing. The gesture symbolized the center’s commitment to patient care, comfort, and support.

“Pink Night” continues to be a meaningful event, uniting the community in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer care.

From mammograms and other diagnostic/screening services to prevention, genetic testing, survivorship, treatment and surgery, the Breast Care Center at HaysMed provides the comprehensive breast care you need, close to home. For personalized services and advanced technology, call the HaysMed Breast Care Center at 785-623-5114 or visit the Breast Care Center website.

October is National Physical Therapy Month

October 22, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed Celebrates October – National Physical Therapy Month

Physical therapists are movement experts who treat people of all ages and abilities, helping them improve and maintain function and quality of life.  They diagnose and treat existing health conditions, but they also provide patient education and customize individual plans of care to include preventative treatments that can help people avoid many health problems before they occur.

Physical therapists (PTs) combine extensive education, clinical experience, and the latest research to create treatment plans tailored to a person’s specific needs and goals.  Physical therapist assistants (PTAs) are educated and licensed clinicians who work under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist.

Physical therapists create individual treatment plans to match each person’s goals, helping people improve their fitness and function, avoid surgery, reduce the use of opioids and other drugs, and partner in their own care.

Physical therapists treat pain through movement, hands-on care, and patient education and by increasing physical activity you can also reduce your risk of other chronic diseases.  Pain is personal, but treating pain takes teamwork.

You can see a physical therapist almost anywhere, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, private practices, people’s homes, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes. You do not need a physician’s referral to make an appointment with a physical therapist for an evaluation.

The outpatient rehab department at the Center for Health Improvement has a staff of 6 physical therapists and 5 physical therapist assistants to meet all client needs.  Specialized services include ASTYM, dry needling, fascial counterstrain, lymphedema management, balance training, pelvic floor rehab for both men and women, and return to work and sport.  Please contact us at (785)623-5691 or visit our website if you would like to find out more about how outpatient physical therapy can help you.

When it comes to your health, you have a choice. Choose more movement and better health. Choose physical therapy!

DeBakey Heart Institute at HaysMed Transforms Cardiac Care in Western Kansas with TAVR Program

October 22, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed, situated in the heart of Western Kansas, has been at the forefront of advanced cardiac care since the establishment of its heart clinic in 2008. The DeBakey Heart Institute at HaysMed addresses a critical need for local cardiac surgical services, allowing patients to receive high-quality care close to home, reducing the need for long-distance travel and providing timely treatment.

Recently, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedures began transforming the landscape of heart valve surgery nationally. HaysMed adopted this advanced procedure two years ago, embracing a less invasive method that significantly benefits high-risk patients. The TAVR program at HaysMed represents a leap forward in cardiac care, offering hope and improved outcomes for patients with severe aortic stenosis.

The American Heart Association outlines and describes the TAVR process in detail, explaining,

“Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a procedure that replaces a diseased aortic valve with a man-made valve.

Your aortic valve controls blood flow from your heart to your body. If your valve becomes stiff, you have a condition called aortic stenosis. Your heart may have to work too hard to pump blood through the small valve opening to the rest of your body. This may lead to increasing heart failure.

During TAVR, your doctor inserts a catheter through a blood vessel in your leg to deliver and implant the artificial valve into your heart. Significant research is exploring how to both advance the use of this technique and improve the devices that are used for TAVR.”

Raja R. Gopaldas, MD, a distinguished cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at HaysMed, provides insights into the TAVR procedure and its intended patients. Dr. Gopaldas explains, “TAVR is a minimally invasive technique developed to replace a diseased aortic valve without the need for open-heart surgery. This procedure is primarily aimed at patients who are considered to be at intermediate or high risk for conventional surgery.”

Dr. Gopaldas further explains the impact of TAVR since its introduction at HaysMed: ‘We have significantly enhanced the availability of life-saving treatments in Western Kansas. Patients now have the convenience of accessing advanced care locally and enjoying a more comfortable recovery close to home.’

He highlights the benefits of TAVR, stating, “The procedure allows for shorter recovery times, reduced discomfort, and faster resumption of daily activities, making it particularly advantageous for older individuals or those dealing with multiple health conditions.”

The American Heart Association offers a video simulation of a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, which you can view by clicking here.

HaysMed offers advanced treatments typically found in larger metropolitan centers, including TAVR and the recent Detour procedure. HaysMed delivers a top-tier TAVR experience, led by our esteemed team of Interventional Cardiologists—Dr. Niranjan Seshadri and Dr. Travis Haneke—along with Dr. Gopaldas and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Roberto Cervera. Supporting them are the expert teams in cardiac anesthesia, the cardiovascular operating room, the catheterization laboratory (cath lab), and perfusionist.

The hospital’s commitment ensures that each patient receives compassionate, top-quality care with the most advanced technology available.

Patients are invited to explore the comprehensive care at HaysMed, where support is provided at every stage of their heart health journey. Visitors can experience state-of-the-art facilities and discuss how services can be customized to meet their unique needs. To learn more about the procedure or to make an appointment for a consultation please call 785-625-4699.

At HaysMed, the focus is not only on treating the heart but also on caring for the whole person.
