Patient Comments

April 2019

The staff at the cancer center has been wonderful. They have been such a help and support through my cancer. The gals in radiation have been very sweet and professional. I am happy with my treatment at the cancer center. Great Job!

I have the upmost respect and faith in my doctors and staff. Everyone is kind, caring and compassionate. I could not ask for a better place to be taken care of.

I have had a very good radiation treatment and love the staff everyone was so friendly first time I walked in. 19 years ago I had radiation here and had a coroat treatment. Dr Harrison is an awesome caring doctor and answered all questions all the nurses all techs involved were so great. You have an awesome radiation unit with caring people.

Dr. Harrison praised his team when I complimented him on how well he and the crew worked. Good man with explanations.

The radiation oncology team has felt like MY TEAM! From my first contact with Brenda – who always greets me by first name and with a smile, to my final treatment with Andrea and Melissa, efficient, friendly, caring and patient-centered appointments have made me comfortable in an alien environment. Yay, Team!

The radiation oncology team is amazing. Nothing less than stellar! From the time you walk in the front doors greeted by Brenda, then Andrea, Hayley, Melissa are all so warm and welcoming. They all truly invest in creating a relationship with their patients. Dr. Harrison is top notch. He’s kind and easy to talk to. He takes his time to listen and make sure he understands exactly what you are saying to provide the best care. With this team you know you are always top priority. Cancer is scary and can easily be discouraging, but with a care team like this, they take all the stress and worry away and help you feel comfortable and confident.

March 2019

It is very nice to come in and be greeted by your first name by Stephanie and Brenda. Melissa, Andrea and Haley all have welcoming smiles, as do Stephanie and Brenda and they always ask how I’m doing and when I’ve come back from my weekend home they always ask how my weekend was. Susie and Danielle are also caring and have smiles for the patients. Emilie is a very caring social worker and visits with family and patients. Dr. Harrison is a wonderful doctor and I’m glad that I got him for my radiation oncologist. He’s very caring and ensures that he does the very best for his patients.

The care I received was excellent. All the doctors and nurses were concerned about how I felt. I appreciated appointments that were never rushed, phone calls returned quickly and questions answered thoroughly. The kind words and reassuring touch was always calming and a comfort. Thank you for all you’ve done for me.

Thank you for always getting us in to see my mother. The staff has always been very considerate. We are very fortunate to have great doctors (Dr. Rodriguez) and others in our surrounding towns.

Medical Oncology
Exceptional care and concern of all personnel concerning all of my visits to HaysMed. Dr. Accurso, an excellent representative of HaysMed oncology. Any and all questions and concerns answered with professional and patient concern answers.

Dr. Accurso was very good, pleasant. A pleasure to know. Answered my questions accurately and thoroughly.

Very nice and helpful.

I enjoyed meeting Dr. Accurso. He was kind and sensitive. When I asked about a test taken last year, he looked up the information and discussed the finds with me. He’s a great addition to Dreiling/Schmidt. I also want to say that I appreciate the staff at the Breast Care Clinic. They are very sensitive to what the patient may be going through. I’ll always come to them, when it’s time for my annual mammogram.

Radiation Oncology
All of the associates in the Radiation Oncology Dept are excellent assets to HaysMed. Their care and compassion for patients is outstanding. Melissa, Andrea, Hayley and Suzie should be recognized for their care and compassion.

The staff in radiation oncology are some of the most friendly and accommodating I have had the opportunity to work with. Just an excellent staff that work in radiation oncology. Thank all of you.

I have been very pleased with the caring and concern they all have been giving me. They are very helpful in getting me in and out of our vehicle. Medically they are doing very well at figuring out what I need and seeing to it that it is done promptly. Thanks to a wonderful staff: Melissa, Haley, Andrea, Suzie and Dr. Harrison – Thanks.

I am very happy with the services I am receiving at your facility. Everyone that I have come in contact with cares deeply about me and it makes me very comfortable. I would recommend your facility to anyone who may need your services. Thanks again and keep up the good work you provide.

Over my lifetime I have spent a lot of time in various hospitals for a number of reasons. My latest and best experience with knowledgeable caring medical staff has been and continues to be at HaysMed as an outpatient in Radiation Oncology. Dr. Lyle Harrison and his team of outstanding nurses consisting of Andrea, Melissa, Hayle and Suzie have been the best team I have found. They have been great at keeping me calm and informed about my treatment. Many thanks for staffing your facility with this caliber of medical professionals.

January 2019

The staff is the best, from the front office to all the ladies in the treatment area. If every office had the people this office does more people would go the doctor.

These ladies made all the difference to me all through the treatment. They all need a raise; they are the best staff I have ever had at any place that I have been to. Dr. Harrison is friendly and knows what he is talking about and not afraid to listen to you and tell you what is what.

The radiation oncology department at HaysMed is wonderful. Dr. Harrison is so calming and makes sure you understand what radiation is and how they are going to help you go through the program. Dr. Harrison’s nurse Susie is also calming and always willing to answer questions and help you. The three radiation technicians, Haley, Andrea and Melissa are very kind, friendly and efficient. Everything is always ready for you so you spend as little time as possible in treatment. They are also very helpful . Andreas even helped me to my car on an icy day. Because of the departments expertise, radiation was not as bad as I had anticipated.

Susie, Andrea, Melissa, Haley, Dr. Harrison and Dr. Rodriguez are such an amazing team. They have made my cancer diagnosis much more bearable and pleasant. They care!!!

I am very pleased with the treatment that I am getting from HaysMed during my time with breast cancer. They doctors, nurses, receptionists, aides and others were extremely competent, helpful and caring. All combined for wonderful care. I am grateful the cancer was found early and treated quickly although I’m confident I would have received the same care had it been more advanced. Thank you HaysMed!

The entire staff at Dreiling Schmidt Cancer Institute Radiation Oncology have made this unfortunate experience something to be dealt with much easier. The smiles help to start my day off on the best foot, even though the treatment for my cancer is a scary situation. Thank you all.

Dec 2018

Rhonda – she worked diligently on getting the proper paperwork completed on my treatments. She is a very caring employee. HaysMed is fortunate to have her.

Dr. Hill is a very caring doctor. He is very persistent on making sure the patient gets the treatment they want and need and does not want his patients in pain. We highly recommend Dr. Hill.

How in the world do you expect me to point out exceptional people in an organization when they are all exceptional. Why do I say that? I have never been treated any better at any place than the radiation therapy (Oncology) department at Hays Med. They were all very caring, concerned, hardworking, professional and overall exceptional. They all tried to make me feel comfortable in an uncomfortable situation, and I say they succeeded very well!

My radiation went smooth I am thankful for all the girls back there. Melissa, Beth, there are two others that are back there both great. They are blonde can’t remember their names. Donna at front desk is so helpful. All the girls have been wonderful. Thank you so much for all you have done for me.

The team you have assembled together on the radiological side of treatment is nothing short of AMAZING. They make dealing with this disease a whole lot more tolerable. Brenda, Andrea, Melissa, Suzie and Haley are truly my “Angels”. I Thank God for placing them in my life to treat and overcome prostate cancer!!

The entire staff of Dreiling Schmidt Cancer Institute has treated me very good.

We have felt very blessed by the time we entered the doors until leaving. Each one from the receptionist, nurses, technicians, doctors has been superb. They have each made what could have been a frightening experience into a positive one. We are grateful for this facility to be within driving distance. It is a calming atmosphere to enter.

The doctors and nurses show genuine concern for how the patient is feeling and for their comfort. Every visit I was greeted with a warm welcome. We would like to give a big “Thank You” to HMC, their Doctors, Specialists, Nurses and all supporting staff for the exceptional care given to me with my recent medical issue. I must rate my experience as an A+. Thanks go out to the Doctors Lopez, Prasad and Harrison that helped us make an informed decision for the treatment we selected. Their expertise and guidance was extremely helpful and reassuring. They would take the time to inform me and my wife with every step along the way. Making each of my 33 days of treatment pleasant and comforting started with the friendly smile and sincere welcome in the morning for me and my wife from Brenda at the admissions desk. Passing the nurse’s station was another warm welcome from Suzie. She always took time to engage in friendly conversation and yet maintain her professionalism each Monday for my weekly progress report. When I crossed paths with Leo he was always friendly and genuinely concerned about my wellbeing. The ladies that administered my treatment were exceptional. They always created an atmosphere that was professional, friendly and extremely comforting. They kept me informed and answered any questions that I would ask. Andrea, Melissa and Hayley are the best. Once again “Thank You” to all.

The entire staff of Dreiling Schmidt Cancer Institute has treated me very good.

This radiation has been an exceptional experience for me. All three radiologists are
extremely kind. I was very nervous starting this, but their smiles and very caring attitudes to me really made me relax and open up. The receptionist was really cool. She always greeted me very warmly and with a great sense of humor. They turned a bad illness into a great
experience.

Please forgive me for not remembering names but the radiology crew at your center are superb! From the daily morning greeting and departure from Brenda, to the awesome girl in that department who have worked with me so nicely. They have become personal friends and have made my many visits there easy to get through. I loved talking and joking with them especially about the ice cold hands that make me jump! Great gals, not one in
particular but all three of them provided excellent service and care to their patients! Keep up the great work! My experience hence has been very positive! Thank all of you so very much!

I would like to thank everyone in RAD oncology Dept. From the receptionist, to the nurses who treated me to all of the doctors I have met. I have been treated with kindness,

“I have never been treated any better at any place than the radiation therapy (Oncology) department at Hays Med. They were all very caring, concerned, hardworking, professional and overall exceptional. They all tried to make me feel comfortable in an uncomfortable situation, and I say they succeeded very well!”

The Cancer Institute is designed to offer the full breadth of cancer treatment center services in one location. We have our own infusion bays, radiation oncology, laboratory, radiology suite and pharmacy.

Medical Oncology

Medical oncology is the use of medications to treat cancer and prevent the spread of the disease. Our medical oncologists diagnose and identify the type of cancer and plan the course of treatment using medication, which may include chemotherapy, infusion services (such as hydration), hormones, and/or pain management.

Chemotherapy Treatment

When prescribed as a part of treatment, chemotherapy helps eliminate cancer cells and/or prevent them from multiplying in the body. Chemotherapy may be administered by infusion, in one of our private or semi-private infusion bays or via pill (oral chemotherapy).

Hematology

Hematology is the study of blood, the blood-forming organs, and non-cancerous blood disorders. Hematology includes diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of blood diseases that affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, and the mechanism of coagulation.

On-site Oncology Pharmacy

At our on-site pharmacy, oncology-trained pharmacists dispense chemotherapy and other medications required in your medical oncology treatment plan. To enhance patient safety, the pharmacy uses advanced technologies, such as computerized ordering systems and bar-coded medications. The cancer center pharmacy is unable to fill personal prescriptions.

On-Site Laboratory Services

For the convenience of patients receiving treatment at our comprehensive cancer center, laboratory testing services are also housed in the restful environment of the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute.

Dreiling/Schmidt Clinical Trials

These are very encouraging times as new treatments and cures are being developed every day. The Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute, through our Masonic Cancer Alliance (MCA) partnership, through The University of Kansas, is offering cancer clinical research trials.

Clinical trials are research studies that test new medications and treatments. By joining a clinical trial, a patient can receive the current standard of treatment care plus new therapies and techniques that potentially promise to better control and cure cancer. It is part of our comprehensive cancer center’s commitment to our patients to give them additional options when there is an opportunity to do more.

Clinical trials also contribute to the medical knowledge that may lead to improved cancer care – for participants and also for future patients battling the disease.

Dreiling/Schmidt Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology is localized therapy used in the treatment of many types of cancer. Treatments use high-energy radiation to destroy rapidly dividing cancer cells. Our radiation oncologist works in conjunction with our medical oncology team and/or surgeons to develop the best, comprehensive cancer treatment plan for each patient. Our staff includes registered radiation therapists, a medical physicist, certified medical dosimetrists, an oncology certified nurse, and support staff including a full-time licensed social worker.

Image Guided Radiation Therapy – IGRT enables the radiation oncology team to pinpoint the exact location of the tumor or affected organ by performing CT scans or high quality x-rays directly on the treatment table. The radiation plan can be precisely targeted, resulting in more accurate treatment with lower radiation doses to the normal surrounding tissues.

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy – SBRT is a technique used to deliver very high doses of radiation to small areas. This is an alternative to patients that are not surgical candidates and meet the criteria for the treatment.

VisionRT – Vision RT is an advanced 3D mapping system that tracks the patient’s position and movement during treatment. This precise localization of the treatment area provides precise radiation treatments that spare more normal tissue while delivering more cancer-killing radiation than would otherwise be possible.

Hypofractionated Whole Breast and Prostate Cancer Radiation Treatment – Hypofractionated radiation is the latest way to treat breast and prostate cancer in those patients that qualify for the treatment. It reduces the number of treatments to one-half of the standard treatment: just 3-4 weeks of radiation rather than the traditional 6-9 weeks. This treatment is proven to be just as effective – with less side effects – than the standard six weeks of radiation.

Cancer Support Services

A diagnosis of cancer can affect your life in many ways. At our cancer treatment center, we believe that support and rehabilitation of cancer patients is as necessary as diagnosis and treatment for complete care. This is why we at the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute offer a variety of comprehensive support services to help patients live well, even with cancer.  These services include: education, financial, lodging/mileage, hospice, palliative care, support groups and other services and programs.

“We have felt very blessed (from) the time we entered the doors until leaving. Each one from the receptionist, nurses, technicians, doctors has been superb. They have each made what could have been a frightening experience into a positive one. We are grateful for this facility to be within driving distance. It is a calming atmosphere to enter.”

Breast Care Center

The Breast Care Center at HaysMed in Hays, Kansas, offers patient-centered, personalized and compassionate care for those with breast concerns. Our cancer center is committed to providing comprehensive diagnostic, prevention and survivorship services for those who have a need for specialized breast care.

“I am so touched by the love, care and expertise of the staff of the Breast Care Center. I am indeed blessed to have them in my life. They feel like family. Thank you!”

When you are seen at the Breast Care Center, you will have a clinical breast exam by a breast specialist. A plan for screening and follow-up will be tailored for you based on your individual risk assessment. In some cases, the radiologist may ask you to come back for a follow-up examination such as a diagnostic mammogram to rule out any suspicious areas.

Screening for Breast Cancer
Doctors and scientists agree that early detection is the best defense against breast cancer.  When found in its earliest stages, the chances of survival are good. The Breast Cancer Center at HaysMed offers a full range of screening techniques to suit all diagnostic needs.

Digital Mammogram – A high-resolution monitor with advanced software to enhance and magnify ensures optimal evaluation and interpretation of breast images by our board certified radiologists. High-quality images are viewed quickly to so evaluation is complete before the patient leaves the room.

Breast Ultrasound – Ultrasound is a safe and painless test that creates images through sound waves instead of x-ray radiation. Ultrasound provides high-resolution, live, in-motion images to further study a specific area on a mammogram, palpable lump or as a guide for minimally invasive procedures.

Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging – MRI of the breast is an imaging technique which utilizes intravenous contrast while obtaining multiple cross-sectional images of your breasts, muscle and chest wall. MRI is highly sensitive for evaluating abnormalities seen on ultrasound or mammography and can also detect lesions that are not-palpable or not seen on mammography. It is especially helpful in women with dense breast tissue or implants which may limit other imaging options.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy – This minimally invasive procedure uses digital x-ray to precisely locate a lesion. We utilize the most advanced, vacuum-assisted core biopsy device to remove multiple samples of breast tissue for analysis. Local numbing medication injected into the breast ensures little or no discomfort.

Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy – This minimally invasive procedure uses real-time ultrasound imaging to precisely locate a lesion. We utilize the most advanced, vacuum-assisted core biopsy device to remove multiple samples of breast tissue for analysis. Local numbing medication injected into the breast ensures little or no discomfort.

Bone Density Testing – DEXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) is a safe, easy way to determine your risk for osteoporosis, and potential for bone fractures. It uses a small amount of radiation to look at the density of your bones and mineral content. Knowing if you have osteoporosis is important as there are treatment options available to minimize the effects of this process.

3D Mammography/Tomosynthesis – The latest technology, breast tomosynthesis converts digital breast images into a stack of very thin layers, or “slices,” to build an essentially “3-dimensional mammogram.” Examining the tissue one millimeter at a time, the radiologist can see breast tissue detail in a way never before possible. Used in conjunction with traditional digital mammography as part of your annual screening, breast tomosynthesis has been proven to reduce “call-backs.” This 3D mammography technology is FDA approved and is only offered in Kansas, outside of Kansas City, at HaysMed in Hays, Kansas.
