Home Safety Starts with Simple Steps

October 16, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

At HaysMed, our commitment to safety extends beyond our walls, it starts with empowering you at home.

Falls are one of the most common causes of injury at home, but many can be prevented with a few simple changes. Use this checklist to identify and fix common hazards around your house, especially in high-risk areas like stairs, floors, and bathrooms.

Simple changes around the home can make a big difference in preventing falls and keeping you and your loved ones safe. Improving lighting, clearing pathways, and installing grab bars are all effective ways to reduce risk. Even your choice of footwear plays a crucial role- shoes with non-slip soles, a secure fit, low wide heels, good traction, stable support, and a lightweight design are ideal. Avoid flip-flops and loose-fitting shoes, as they can increase the chance of slipping or tripping. Prioritizing safety in these small ways can lead to a safer, more confident daily routine.

Below are some safety tips to keep in mind in your home:

Stairs & Steps (Indoors & Outdoors)

  • Keep stairs clear of clutter like shoes, books, or bags.
  • Repair any broken or uneven steps.
  • Ensure there’s proper lighting at both the top and bottom of the stairs- glowing switches can help.
  • Replace burned-out bulbs promptly.
  • Secure loose or torn carpet, or use non-slip treads.
  • Install sturdy handrails on both sides of the stairs.

Floors & Living Spaces

  • Clear pathways of furniture and clutter.
  • Remove or secure throw rugs with non-slip backing or double-sided tape.
  • Keep cords and wires out of walkways- tape them down or move them near walls.
  • Store frequently used items on lower shelves to avoid climbing.
  • Use a sturdy step stool with a handhold- never use a chair.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms

  • Place a lamp within easy reach of the bed.
  • Use nightlights to light the path to the bathroom.
  • Add non-slip mats or strips to the tub or shower.
  • Install grab bars near the toilet and inside the tub for extra support.

A safer home starts with awareness. Take a few minutes to walk through your space and make small changes that can make a big difference.
