HaysMed Physician Named Preceptor of the Year

October 10, 2022/in All, HaysMed News, News, OB-GYN/by devteam

Hays, KS – Dr. Joel Fort, Obstetrician/Gynecologist was recently named the 2022 Physician Preceptor of the Year by Wichita State University College of Health Professions, Department of Physician Assistant.

The Physician Assistant program at Wichita State relies on providers who serve as clinical rotation preceptors and mentors for their students.  The students work closely with preceptors, progressively developing the skills and clinical judgment needed to become practicing PAs.  Preceptors play a vital role in the education of students and mentoring future colleagues.

Dr. Fort is a newer perception for the program but has quickly made an impact on students.

“He put the utmost effort, care, and time into my clinical education experience in the time I spent with him, even going as far as to purchase our OB/GYN book and highlight it beforehand with things he felt most important that I know.” Commented a student.  “ He invested time during his one afternoon off a week to sit down and go through topics with me, rather than spending time to catch up on things he needed to do himself. He trusted me to first assist in surgery, and I felt my skills improved so much in my time with him. He truly cares about his students.”

Dr. Fort has been with HaysMed since 1999 and practices in the Women’s Clinic.

HaysMed Named Top 20 Rural and Community Hospital

March 9, 2022/in All, haysmed awards, HaysMed News, News, Nursing News, top 20 rural hospital /by devteam

Hays, KS – HaysMed was recently named one of the top 20 rural and community hospitals in the country.  HaysMed was the only hospital in Kansas to earn this designation.

The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) has announced the 20 highest-ranked prospective payment system hospitals in the country based on an evaluation by the Chartis Center for Rural Health. The hospitals are identified using the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX, the most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural PPS hospital performance. These hospitals will be recognized May 12 during NRHA’s Rural Hospital Innovation Summit in Albuquerque, N.M.

The determining factors for the top 20 rural and community hospitals are based on eight indices: inpatient market share, outpatient market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge, and financial efficiency.

“HaysMed is proud of the efforts of its physicians and Associates who have contributed to our hospital achieving this designation,” said Eddie Herrman, President and CEO. “Our recognition as a top health care provider proves our community can count on us to deliver the services they need now and in the future.”

HAYS, Kansas – HaysMed’s Center for Women’s Health joins Kansas Department of Health and Environment in supporting mothers’ mental health through the Kansas Moms in Mind (KMIM) program. As part of the KMIM project, clinic staff participated in implementation technical assistance and case consultation seminars from a team of perinatal behavioral health experts to support effective screening and treatment practices during pregnancy.

“One of the greatest benefits of the program was the chance to meet one on one with an expert to discuss how things improved for our patients, talk about best practices, and how best to implement them” said Dr Jenna Sloan, OB/GYN.

Through this project and the work of perinatal stakeholders across the state, providers will be better equipped to identify and treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, leading to improved maternal and child health outcomes for Kansas families.

Associate Spirit Award Winners

January 19, 2022/in All, HaysMed News, News/by devteam

HAYS, Kansas – The Associate Spirit Award at HaysMed recognizes an outstanding Associate who has gone above and beyond their daily job duties to care for a patient, visitor, or Associate at HaysMed, Recent award winners include Abby Scinto, PCT, and Molly Goodnow, LPN, both working on the surgical unit.

In addition to her duties at HaysMed, Scinto has recently completed cosmetology school. After a call from one of the charge nurses, Scinto volunteered her time to come in and take care of a patient whose hair needed attention.  She spent 5 hours cutting, cleaning, and styling her hair spending 5 hours to take care of the patient on her weekend off.  The patient and her husband were beyond pleased with the result

On a hot August day Goodnow received a call asking if she would be willing to come help Bone, Joint & Spine out for a few hours. She said she would but her car was in the shop so it would be a little while before she could get to the hospital.  Knowing the importance of coming to help her teammates right away, she decided not to wait on her car and began the walk from her house, which is near TMP, all the way to the hospital. On arrival she caught her breath and cooled off, then she was asking what she could do to help. All of this with a smile on her face.

Both Associates went above and beyond with their dedication to the care of patients at HaysMed.
