HaysMed Receives Three-Year Reaccreditation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) from the American College of Radiology (ACR)

July 31, 2023/in All, News/by Jade Lemmon

Hays, Kansas – HaysMed, the leading healthcare provider in Hays, Kansas, proudly announces its recent achievement of a three-year term of reaccreditation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from the American College of Radiology (ACR). This recognition underscores HaysMed’s commitment to delivering superior patient care and maintaining the highest standards in medical imaging.

MRI, a non-invasive medical test that utilizes magnetic fields to generate detailed images of internal body parts, plays a crucial role in aiding physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. HaysMed’s MRI program has received accreditation at both the hospital MRI and the MRI at the Orthopedic Clinic, ensuring exceptional imaging capabilities for both adult and pediatric patients.

The ACR Gold Seal of Accreditation represents the pinnacle of image quality and patient safety standards. It is bestowed only upon facilities that meet ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards, following a meticulous peer-review evaluation conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Factors such as image quality, personnel qualifications, equipment adequacy, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are rigorously assessed. The findings are then reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, providing a comprehensive report to support continuous practice improvement.

The HaysMed Imaging Department plays a pivotal role in accurately imaging, interpreting images, and diagnosing patients, offering a comprehensive range of services for both adult and pediatric cases. The department is staffed by experienced radiologists and certified, licensed radiology technologists who demonstrate expertise in their respective fields.

HaysMed Hospital Successfully Introduces Optimizer Smart Mini System Implant for Heart Failure Patients

July 21, 2023/in All, News/by Jade Lemmon

Hays, KS – HaysMed announces the successful implementation of the Optimizer Smart Mini System implant under the expertise of Dr. Kent Gleed, cardiologist at the Debakey Heart Clinic.  This procedure marks a significant milestone in cardiac healthcare and enhancing patient care.

The Optimizer Smart Mini System is an advanced medical device designed to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from moderate to severe heart failure. Specifically developed for patients who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy, this innovative system helps restore the heart’s natural function and significantly reduces the debilitating symptoms associated with heart failure.

The device is implanted in a small pocket under the skin of the upper chest, along with pacemaker leads that are placed in the heart’s right ventricular septum, while the patient is under light sedation. After implantation, the physician custom-programs and activates the device for the patient.

Unlike a pacemaker or a defibrillator, the Optimizer system is designed to control the strength of contraction of the heart muscle rather than the rhythm.

The implant is an outpatient procedure, and most patients can return home soon after the implant is complete. Plus, most patients can return to everyday activities shortly after the procedure.

Dr. Kent Gleed, who performed the procedure, expressed his excitement about the potential benefits for patients. He stated, “The introduction of the Optimizer Smart Mini System at HaysMed signifies a new era in cardiac care. This cutting-edge technology offers hope to patients who have been living with the burdensome symptoms of heart failure. By optimizing cardiac function, we can enhance their quality of life and potentially reduce hospital readmissions.”

Terry Siek, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President for Patient Care, shared his enthusiasm for being able to provide this innovative service to patients at HaysMed. He commented, “We are thrilled to offer the Optimizer Smart Mini System implant to our patients. It aligns with our commitment to deliver exceptional healthcare and improve patient outcomes. This technology allows us to expand our cardiac treatment options, providing our patients with state-of-the-art care right here in our community.”

New Procedure at HaysMed Offers Minimally Invasive Solution for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

July 7, 2023/in All, News/by Ryan Kesner

Hays, KS – Prostate enlargement, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), affects millions of men around the world and can lead to bothersome problems such as frequent urination, urgency, and blocked or reduction in the low of urine. HaysMed now offers a minimally invasive procedure called UroLift that can provide long-term relief from these symptoms without the side effects of traditional treatments.

Unlike other BPH treatments, which involve either medication or surgery, UroLift requires no cutting, heating or removal of prostate tissue.  Instead, small implants are placed in the prostate to lift and hold the enlarged tissue out of the way to improve urine flow.

“This is a quick and easy procedure that can be done under sedation.,” said Dr. Srinivas Samavedi, a urologist at HaysMed. “Most patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms within days and are able to return to normal activities quickly.”

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) can have a negative impact on a man’s quality of life. The benefits of the UroLift treatment, especially for younger men, includes not only the relief of bothersome urinary symptoms, but also the preservation of sexual function.

Dr. Wallace Curry, urologist commented “I am excited to offer patients a minimally invasive procedure that effectively addresses their BPH symptoms. With UroLift accessible in our community, we can promptly restore comfort, improve urinary function, and enhance the overall well-being of our patients.”
