HaysMed Nationally Recognized for its High-Quality Stroke Care

July 19, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

The American Heart Association presents Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus award for proven dedication to ensuring all stroke patients have access to best practices and life-saving care

July 19, 2024 – HaysMed has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus quality achievement award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest research- and evidence-based guidelines. Get With The Guidelines – Stroke is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.

“HaysMed is one of 18 hospitals in the state of Kansas receiving this award, showcasing that HaysMed is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Eddie Herrman, HaysMed President and CEO. “Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which studies show can help patients recover better. The end goal is to ensure more people in the Hays and surrounding communities can experience longer, healthier lives.”

Each year, program participants qualify for the award by demonstrating how their organization has committed to providing quality care for stroke patients. In addition to following treatment guidelines, Get With The Guidelines participants also educate patients to help them manage their health and recovery at home.

“We are incredibly pleased to recognize HaysMed for its commitment to caring for patients with stroke,” said Steven Messe, M.D., volunteer chairperson of the American Heart Association Stroke System of Care Advisory Group and professor of neurology and director of fellowships of neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. “Participation in Get With The Guidelines is associated with improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates – a win for health care systems, families and communities.”

HaysMed also received two Honor Roll awards including the American Heart Association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus award. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet specific criteria that reduce the time between an eligible patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with thrombolytic therapy.

The second Honor Roll award that HaysMed received was the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award. Target: Type 2 Diabetes aims to ensure patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to stroke.

Hays Medical Center Nurse Receives International Award

July 15, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

Jessica Albers honored for exceptional contributions to forensic nursing specialty

July 15, 2024 – The International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) honored Jessica Albers, MFS, BSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P. with the Virginia A. Lynch Pioneer Award in Forensic Nursing, the Association’s highest award, at a presentation held at Hays Medical Center (HaysMed) in Hays, Kansas on Friday, June 28, 2024. Albers is Sexual Assault/Forensic Nurse Examiner at Hays Medical Center. The award is named for Virginia Lynch, known globally as the “mother of forensic nursing.”

Albers also serves the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence in several capacities: Continuing Nurse Education Program Coordinator, Statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Clinical Consultant, and SANE/Sexual Assault Resource Team (SART) Instructor.

“Jessica is a leader and role model for forensic nursing in Kansas and has shown her commitment to the development of the specialty year after year,” said Jandi Head, Forensic Program Coordinator in Liberal, Kansas and the current Kansas IAFN Chapter President, who both nominated Albers and presented the award. “She has presented thousands of hours of training, extending both her knowledge and clinical skill to expand forensic nursing throughout the state. Jessica’s pioneering spirit has impacted countless patients’ lives and careers of nurses, and it has contributed to the overall specialty’s growth,” she said.

Albers was selected for the international award in recognition of exceptional contributions to forensic nursing, particularly her work focused on trauma-informed and patient-centered care, strangulation, suspect exams, sexual violence awareness and forensic nursing, as well as her dedication to evidence-based practice solutions and innovative approaches to meet the SANE shortage. Her forensic nursing expertise rests on not only clinical skills but also professional research and work in forensic science; in 2004, Albers worked as a graduate student in Iraq with the first wave of archaeologists and anthropologists who collected evidence that was used in the trial against Saddam Hussein.

Hays Medical Center’s President and CEO, Eddie Herrman praised Albers saying, “Jessica Albers embodies the excellence that defines HaysMed. Her unwavering commitment to forensic nursing and her compassionate care for patients set a high standard for our entire team. We are incredibly proud to recognize her outstanding contributions with this award.”

“Jessica is a pillar of expertise with a unique perspective of a nurse clinician and educator as well as a forensic scientist,” said Anne Boatright, MSN, RN, SANE-A, FAAN, IAFN president. “Our specialty is deepened and expanded by pioneering forensic nurses like Jessica, and it is truly an honor to recognize her contributions with forensic nursing’s highest award,” she said.

Albers earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and a Master of Forensic Science from Nebraska Wesleyan University. She is a native of McCook, Nebraska and has worked in Kansas since 2001.

Focus on Ford County: Q&A with Felecia Minyard, APRN, of HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City

July 9, 2024/in All, HaysMed News, News/by Jade Lemmon

Focus on Ford County: Q&A with Felecia Minyard, APRN, of HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City

At HaysMed, we’ve always believed healthcare is at its best when it’s local and personal. Convenience is key, and everything we do is designed to make it easy for you to access not only the care you need, but the best care available. That’s why we ensure HaysMed’s exceptional care is conveniently accessible for people in and around Dodge City.

To explain more about the primary and specialty care options available at the HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City, we sat down with Felecia Minyard, APRN. As an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with 20+ years of experience, Felecia provides comprehensive primary care for children and adults of all ages at the Dodge City clinic.

What types of care and services are available for patients at the HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City?

It’s a multispecialty clinic – so there are several types of care options available under one roof, all right here without leaving Dodge City. So that’s very nice and convenient for the patients. I provide primary care services, and our clinic is also home to specialists in orthopedics, cardiology, general surgery, pulmonology, and urology – plus, we are connected to every type of specialist at HaysMed. And it’s really nice because patients can establish with us when they’re healthy, so we can go over their full health history and get their medications. Then, if they develop an acute illness and need specialized care – here or via referral to a specialist at HaysMed – everything is already in the system and their care can be coordinated for the best results.

Would you say your patients are happy to have the HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City? What do they say about it?

Yes. There definitely is a large need here in the community. This clinic benefits patients because we can collaborate professionally with other providers to make sure there is continuity of care – and to keep as much of your care close to home as possible. For example, if you’re a patient under the care of a HaysMed cardiologist and you need to have your lab work done, you can come here, have your labs drawn, and the results will be entered here at the clinic and sent right to your cardiologist through our integrated system. The process just makes the whole healthcare system flow faster. We also don’t have that delay in trying to get outside records from other places or requesting lab results and not repeating tests that you just had done.

This is a unique model for rural healthcare in Western Kansas. How is it different?

It’s very comprehensive. It’s very nice to have that collaboration with these specialty clinics because you might be seeing urology, and we have a question about one of your medications. I can always reach out to urologists, touch base with them, see if it’s okay that we make this adjustment. Or if you’re seeing one of the cardiologists that comes here for outreach, we can see whenever they’re here next, and we can get the testing and screenings done ahead of time.

Tell us about what you do as a primary care provider at the HaysMed Multispecialty Clinic in Dodge City.

I see patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors. With a goal of helping my patients stay healthy and providing personalized care when they are sick or injured, my team and I provide wellness checks, preventive health services, screenings, vaccinations and much more, including expert management of chronic and acute medical concerns. Whether it’s a patient who has always had regular, on-time primary care or someone who hasn’t seen a doctor in years, we welcome everyone to see us for better health and great healthcare.

We are accepting new patients, and like all providers here at the clinic, we try to address gaps and unmet needs that limit access to healthcare in rural areas. For instance, when patients speak little or no English, we know that’s a barrier to seeking out the care they need, so we have translation services available.

What do you like best about working in Dodge City?

I like practicing in Dodge City because in a rural setting you get that small town feeling. It’s very personalized care. And I like that. I like being able to follow up on my patients and see them go through different phases of their lives or meet their healthcare goals. There are always opportunities to help people, educate people, and improve their lives. It’s been very rewarding – a great career – and I’ve been very happy with it. The need in the community is what drew me to this clinic.
