HaysMed’s Jayne Inlow Receives Citizen of the Year Award at Hays Chamber Banquet

January 31, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

HaysMed is delighted to spotlight the remarkable achievements of Jayne Inlow, who serves as a Development Officer for the HaysMed Foundation. At the 2024 Annual Awards Banquet hosted by The Chamber of Commerce in Hays, Kansas, held at Fort Hays State University on January 30, Jayne Inlow was honored with the Nex-Tech Citizen of the Year award.

During the ceremony, Chamber President and CEO Sarah Wasinger acknowledged the exceptional contributions of community members in different areas, as well as the commitment of Chamber staff and board members. Wasinger included, “Jayne’s quiet yet impactful contributions to the Kiwanis Club of Hays and various community initiatives earned her this prestigious recognition.”

The following statement was shared during the banquet, highlighting Inlow’s significant philanthropic efforts and influence within the Hays community, earning her the Nex-Tech Citizen of the Year award:

Some people are destined to be bold leaders and accomplish incredible feats while maneuvering in the front lines. Others take a humbler approach, working quietly with others in the background to make a positive difference in the lives of those around them. Tonight’s Citizen of the Year recipient is the latter. Chances are, you have seen numerous fruits of this individual’s labor as you have traversed across the wonderful city of Hays and haven’t even known she had a helping hand in making those things come into fruition.

As a dedicated member of the Kiwanis Club of Hays for the past six years, she has invested countless hours supporting this organization by distributing flags throughout the community on patriotic holidays, helped organize the Wild West Festival Saloon, served on the 70th anniversary celebration committee, and coordinated the community’s largest easter egg hunt. Additionally, she serves as a current Kiwanis board director and was responsible for bringing numerous funding opportunities that benefitted hundreds of youth right here in Hays.

When she is not doing good work through Kiwanis, this year’s award winner can be found volunteering for The Chamber as a proud Ambassador, where serves as a positive beacon of encouragement and support of local businesses and the individuals they employ. One of her most noteworthy contributions to this organization and many others across the community is the knowledge and expertise that she brings to the Annual Chamber Golf Tournament and numerous other fundraisers for area non-profits, such as The ARC of Central Plains annual Festival of the Trees. She has given freely of her spare time to help set up these online auctions, which has garnered her the nickname of “Click Bid Hero.” She also serves on the Campus Community Collaborative that is dedicated to empowering the relationships between FHSU and the communities it serves.

“This is a well-deserved honor,” said HaysMed Foundation Executive Director Jeff Brull, “The list of people and organizations that owe successes to Jayne’s efforts over the years is more extensive than I think anyone even realizes.” HaysMed extends heartfelt congratulations once again to Jayne Inlow. Her exemplary dedication and contributions make a significant and positive impact not only within the HaysMed organization but also within the broader Hays community. HaysMed commends her outstanding efforts and unwavering commitment to excellence, which serve as an inspiration to all.

HaysMed Recognized for Higher Quality and Cost-Efficiency in Maternity Care

January 31, 2024/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

Hays, KS – HaysMed is proud to be recognized by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) with a Blue Distinction® Centers+ (BDC+) for Maternity Care designation, as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. To earn this designation, each facility must deliver quality care, safely and cost-effectively.

“HaysMed is steadfast in its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of maternity care quality. We recognize that providing exceptional maternity care is not only crucial for the health and well-being of our patients but also integral to the overall strength and resilience of our community. This distinction reflects our ongoing efforts to prioritize excellence in maternity care and to contribute positively to the well-being of the families we serve.” said Eddie Herrman, President and CEO of HaysMed.

The Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program plays a key role in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s (BCBSA) National Health Equity Strategy aimed at reducing racial health disparities across the care spectrum and improving patient outcomes for all Americans. To align with this strategy, the Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program enhanced its quality and measurement standards to recognize higher-quality facilities that have taken action to respond effectively to obstetric emergencies, reduce racial disparities, and improve maternal health outcomes.

Based on data from the current designation cycle, facilities designated under the Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program demonstrate higher-quality care compared to non-Blue Distinction Center facilities, with overall average rates of 26% lower episiotomies, 60% fewer elective deliveries and 17% lower cesarean births—all of which point to healthier outcomes for patients. BDC+ designated facilities also exhibited an average savings of 21% for maternity care.

“The provider and patient experience is powerful and we are proud that HaysMed has put in the work to ensure their patients have this level of care,” said Matt All, President/CEO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. “Each facility recognized as a Blue Distinction Center is meeting rigorous quality metrics in all phases of their maternity care programs and, in doing so, delivering better care for our members and all Kansans.”

The Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program’s selection criteria was devised to close clinical care gaps and reduce inequities that persist throughout the maternal care spectrum. The selection criteria includes components of BCBSA’s Maternal Health Equity Actions, which dismantle the cultural, operational and structural barriers that have created inequities that persist in maternal care.

To be designated under this program, each applicant facility was evaluated on a combination of objective data on patient outcomes as well as the practices implemented to reduce racial disparities and improve maternal health outcomes, such as:

  • Using evidence-based best practices to respond effectively to obstetric emergencies
  • Offering unconscious bias training
  • Participating in the regional Perinatal Quality Collaborative
  • Having doula support available on the maternity care team
  • Collecting race, ethnicity and language data
  • Having a program dedicated to quality improvements in maternal care
  • Running drills and simulations to prepare providers are prepared to deal with a range of obstetric emergencies
  • Demonstrating health outcomes that exceed the selection criteria from our program’s previous evaluation cycle

Since 2006, the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality specialty care at lower costs in the areas of bariatric surgery, cancer care, cardiac care, cellular immunotherapy, fertility care, gene therapy, knee and hip replacement, maternity care, spine surgery, substance use treatment and recovery, and transplants, while encouraging health care professionals to improve the care they deliver.

For more information about the program and for a complete listing of the designated providers, visit the BCBSKS website.

HaysMed Receives “Birthing Friendly” Designation

January 17, 2024/in All, News/by Jane Soukup

Congratulations to the HaysMed Birthing Center for receiving a “Birthing Friendly” designation.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced its first-ever “Birthing-Friendly” designation to describe high-quality maternity care. The designation identifies hospitals and health systems that participate in a statewide or national perinatal quality improvement collaborative program and implement evidence-based care to improve maternal health.

“The staff in the Birthing Center is dedicated to improving maternal health, with Kristy Schlaefli, Director of Acute Care and Obstetrics, Kalin LaBarge, Clinical Supervisor of Women Infant Care, and Jessica Seib, Birthing Center Development Coordinator leading this exemplary HaysMed team” said Terry Siek, Vice President of Patient Care/Chief Nursing Officer.

HaysMed provides optimal care to women and their infants during one of life’s most pivotal moments, including LaBarge and Seib, who are certified in inpatient obstetric nursing (RNC-OB) from the National Certification Corporation, recognizing their knowledge, skills, and expertise in providing exceptional care to expectant mothers and their newborns. The Birthing Center works collaboratively with the healthcare team to identify and address any potential complications that may arise during labor and delivery and are also knowledgeable about breastfeeding support, postpartum care, and newborn care, ensuring a smooth transition into the postpartum period.

To earn the “Birthing Friendly” designation, hospitals and health systems report their progress on CMS’s Maternal Morbidity Structural Measure to the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program. The measure identifies whether a hospital or health system has participated in a statewide or national perinatal quality improvement collaborative program; and, implemented evidence-based quality interventions in hospital settings to improve maternal health.

HaysMed’s listing on CMS’s website, Care Compare, now includes the pink mother-and-baby icon, denoting the hospital’s Birthing-Friendly status.

To view other designated “Birthing Friendly” hospitals, visit, https://data.cms.gov/provider-data/birthing-friendly-hospitals-and-health-systems

Branson Sandoval, RN, Honored with the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Patient Care at HaysMed

January 11, 2024/in All, News/by Jane Soukup

Hays, KS – HaysMed is pleased to announce that Branson Sandoval, RN, has received the DAISY Award for his exceptional dedication to patient care. His efforts undeniably make a profound impact on the lives of his patients and their families.

“Branson will be registered with the DAISY Foundation as national recognition for his service as an extraordinary nurse. And, because we want everyone to know how proud we are at HaysMed, the DAISY Award Banner will be displayed on Branson’s unit which is the Intensive Care Unit.” praised Terry Siek, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President for Patient Services at HaysMed.

The nomination for the DAISY Award originated from a family member of a patient, expressing a desire to recognize Branson Sandoval’s thoughtful and impactful care. The family member said, “Branson cared for our mom in exactly the same way we would care for her, and he went above and beyond to not only connect with my mother but with me; as well. What a blessing and treasure you have in him, and I am beyond thankful I got the chance to witness this level of compassion that is grossly missing in our world today.”

The family member continued, “I really enjoyed watching his care and attention towards her. After the care I witnessed him give to her, I felt at ease to get a little bit of sleep for myself. He made me feel like she was his main priority; while in the room with her.”

Established in 2000, the DAISY Foundation was founded in memory of Patrick Barnes, acknowledging the significant influence exceptional nurses had on him and his family. The name “DAISY” is linked to the autoimmune disease he battled, ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura). The DAISY award is accompanied with a daisy pin for awardees to wear to serve as a daily reminder of how much their caring efforts and outstanding customer service are appreciated by their patients and family members as well as HaysMed.

By awarding nurses that bring outstanding compassion and kindness to the bedside of patients in hospitals across the nation, the DAISY Foundation hopes to bring awareness to us all regarding how important a role nurses can and do play in our lives.  Hays Medical Center is proud to be a DAISY Award Partner by honoring our own outstanding nurses. To nominate a nurse or team at HaysMed for the Daisy Award, individuals are encouraged to visit the official website at https://www.haysmed.com/daisy-nomination-form/.
