HaysMed Birth Center Enhances Maternal Healthcare in Western Kansas

February 20, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

“HaysMed Highlights” is a series that explores the various teams and services at HaysMed, showcasing our exemplary patient experience and steadfast commitment to healthcare excellence.

The Birth Center at HaysMed, a leader in women’s health services in western Kansas, is proud to announce significant enhancements in its care offerings, focusing on comprehensive support for women throughout their pregnancy journey. In 2024, HaysMed’s Labor and Delivery Unit successfully delivered 553 newborns, underscoring the substantial contribution to regional health and the department’s role as a pivotal center for maternal and newborn care in the area.

“Supporting healthy families is at the heart of what we do, and it is a privilege to be trusted by so many mothers and families in our community,” said Dr. Timothy Hoskins, HaysMed. “Prioritizing maternal mental health is essential, as it is a fundamental component of family well-being.”

Advancing Maternal Health

HaysMed’s commitment extends beyond delivery. In a time where mental health awareness and assistance is on the rise, HaysMed is ahead of the curve, with resources and screenings for pregnant and postnatal women. HaysMed has initiated a crucial effort to increase screenings for prenatal and postnatal mental health and mood disorders, which are integral for early identification and support. These screenings are performed during the first prenatal visit at 10 weeks and again between 28-30 weeks. This proactive approach ensures that the Birth Center providers can offer timely interventions, including counseling and medication management.

Additionally, HaysMed patients benefit from the Kansas Moms in Mind initiative, which provides crucial support during the woman’s 4th trimester—a critical period after childbirth marked by physical and emotional adjustments. Supported by Kansas Connecting Communities and the Kansas Maternal and Child Health, this program enhances the providers’ ability to treat perinatal behavioral health disorders, focusing on conditions like postpartum depression and anxiety. This initiative ensures that new mothers receive comprehensive care and support during this pivotal phase, emphasizing the importance of maternal mental health.

Birth Center and Women’s Services

The Birth Center at HaysMed offers extensive women’s health and OB/GYN services. These include labor and delivery, lactation services, postpartum care, advanced surgical technology, and neonatal intensive care (NICU). Throughout their pregnancy journey, patients have access to wellness and prenatal education, both in-person and online to accommodate local and regional patients, covering topics such as birth, breastfeeding, newborn care, and sibling preparation.

Kalin LaBarge, Labor & Delivery Supervisor at HaysMed Birth Center, expressed deep appreciation for the families who choose this facility. “We are committed to maintaining our tradition of excellence and dedicated care for both our community and the region for years to come,” she stated. The HaysMed Birth Center is proud to have a distinguished team of experts, including Dr. Timothy Hoskins, Paula Bitter, APRN, and Anne Marie Hager, APRN, who bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise in maternal and newborn care.

Support for Women’s Entire Health Journey

At HaysMed, supporting women at every stage of their health journey is a top priority. The OB/GYN team, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine department, comprising 19 providers—including physicians, advanced practice providers, and physician assistants—deliver complete reproductive health services and well-woman exams. Additionally, the dedicated Breast Care Center at HaysMed is staffed with a specialized radiologist and two breast care surgeons, ensuring timely and effective mammography readings and surgical interventions.

HaysMed remains dedicated to providing a full spectrum of maternal and women’s health services. With a goal to ensure a safe, comfortable, and joyous experience for all patients, supported by the latest in medical technology and the highest standards of care.

Welcome to the world, Harvey! We’re overjoyed to share this special moment with Aubry, one of our HaysMed Labor and Delivery nurses, and her beautiful newborn. In 2024 alone, our Labor and Delivery Unit at HaysMed celebrated the arrival of 553 newborns, reflecting the hard work and expertise of our exceptional team. Celebrating American Heart Month: Advanced Cardiac Care at DeBakey Heart Institute

February 17, 2025/in All, HaysMed News, News/by Jade Lemmon

Innovation meets compassion to provide exceptional cardiac care at the DeBakey Heart Institute at HaysMed. As a leader in advanced and vascular care, we are continually investing in groundbreaking procedures, state-of-the-art facilities, and top-tier professionals to ensure patients receive world-class cardiac care close to home.

This commitment is especially significant during American Heart Month (February), a time dedicated to raising awareness about heart health and the importance of early detection and prevention. With heart disease being the leading cause of death in the U.S. for men and women, it’s important to know the signs of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, strokes and more. It’s also important to know where to go to receive lifesaving cardiac care – whether routine or emergency/interventional. At HaysMed, we are proud to be the leader in cutting-edge cardiac care across western Kansas.

Milestones & Matters of the Heart

HaysMed recently achieved a milestone as the first medical center in Kansas to complete a Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty with Bypass (PTAB), commonly known as “The Detour” procedure. This innovative intervention targets peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition that narrows or blocks arteries in the limbs, causing pain and risking limb loss. The minimally invasive procedure creates a new pathway for blood flow, bypassing blockages and restoring circulation. Patients typically experience reduced recovery times, fewer complications, and improved quality of life.

In another groundbreaking achievement, our DeBakey Heart Institute team recently performed the region’s first EV-ICD procedure. This device, implanted outside the heart, offers a less invasive solution for managing life-threatening arrhythmia and reduces risk of vascular complications and infections when compared to a traditional ICD procedure. Dr. Raja Gopaldas, a cardiothoracic surgeon, and Dr. Jacob Morgan, an electrophysiologist, worked alongside HaysMed’s highly skilled Cath Lab team and cardiac anesthesiologists in a multidisciplinary collaboration.

State-of-the-Art Facilities: New Hybrid OR

HaysMed is setting a new standard in cardiac care with the construction of its hybrid operating room, blending the capabilities of a cardiac catheterization lab and a traditional operating room to address conditions that were previously only treatable with open-heart surgery. The hybrid operating room is a significant investment toward ensuring HaysMed continues offering innovative tools and procedures. This advanced facility will enable our team to offer cutting-edge treatment options, ultimately benefiting patient outcomes and ensuring access to the latest medical technologies. This achievement is made possible by generous financial support from local donors dedicated to advancing local healthcare.

New Additions to the Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Team

To address the growing demand for local cardiac services, we have welcomed two new cardiothoracic surgeons, an interventional cardiologist and an electrophysiologist to our cardiothoracic and cardiology teams. As our capabilities grow and expand, it’s important to understand the specialized roles these experts play in heart care.

Cardiologists diagnose and treat conditions like heart attacks, heart failure, and high blood pressure, often using medications or minimally invasive procedures like stent placement to restore proper blood flow. Cardiothoracic surgeons focus on surgical interventions, repairing blocked arteries, and damaged heart valves

Meanwhile, electrophysiologists (EPs) specialize in heart rhythm disorders, using treatments like pacemaker implants and ablation procedures to correct irregular heartbeats. The addition of these specialists has made procedures such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive technique that has transformed heart valve surgery, a possibility locally for high-risk patients.

Exceptional Support & Care Management

The ChartSpan care management program is available to eligible Medicare patients in the DeBakey Heart Institute, providing round-the-clock access to medical professionals, prescription cost savings, personalized health strategies and more. The program ensures patients receive the necessary support they need to maintain their health and avoid emergency room visits.

Should You See a Cardiologist?

February is the perfect time to focus on your heart health and be aware of signs and symptoms that may need attention. The American Heart Association has identified symptoms that often signal underlying heart issues requiring medical attention. Understanding your warning signs could make a life-saving difference—here’s what to watch for:

  • Chest pain: Pressure, tightness, or pain, especially radiating to the arms, neck, jaw, or back.
  • Shortness of breath during activities, lying down, or suddenly.
  • Palpitations: rapid, irregular, or fluttering heartbeat.
  • Dizziness or fainting, especially when accompanied by chest pain or other symptoms.
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, or abdomen.
  • Fatigue that is unexplained or interferes with daily activities.
  • High blood pressure
  • Family history of heart disease.
  • Chronic conditions like cholesterol or diabetes.
  • Follow-up after a heart attack or stroke.

For severe or sudden symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Preventive care is the cornerstone of heart health, and HaysMed is well-equipped as the leading destination for cardiac care in our region. Regular check-ups and screenings can identify risks early, preventing severe complications. Don’t wait to prioritize your heart health. Schedule an appointment or screening with your HaysMed physician today.

Celebrating Helen Windholz: A Legacy of Compassion and Care at HaysMed

February 6, 2025/in HaysMed News, News/by Leanna Swart

After an extraordinary 46-year career at HaysMed, Helen Windholz has retired, marking the end of an era of dedicated service in nursing, particularly in Hospice/Palliative Care. Helen’s last day was celebrated on January 24th, surrounded by colleagues, friends, and the many lives she has impacted.

Born and raised on a farm near St. Peter, Kansas, Helen’s journey in nursing began after graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Fort Hays State University in December 1978. Her career at HaysMed, initially St. Anthony’s Hospital, commenced immediately after, fulfilling a commitment tied to a scholarship she received during her senior year.

Helen’s extensive career covered multiple critical and specialized care roles. She began on the medical floor, swiftly moving to roles in the ICU, where she was part of the Transport Team, and later to the PACU, where she eventually became Supervisor. In February 2006, Helen transitioned to Hospice/Palliative Care, first as a PRN staff nurse and then in a full-time capacity, profoundly shaping the program with her empathy, skill, and leadership.

Helen Windholz’s professional achievements are extensive, spanning certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), active contributions to numerous committees including the National Hospice/Palliative Care Organization, and the development of educational programs for HaysMed nurses. Her dedication to community and service is also highlighted by her receipt of several prestigious awards. In 2020, Helen was honored with the DAISY Award, a national recognition given to nurses who exhibit exceptional clinical skills and compassionate care. Additionally, Helen’s exceptional contributions to HaysMed were recognized in 2005 when she received the Sr. Mary J. Mollison Nurse of the Year Award, the highest accolade awarded to a nurse within the organization.

Helen’s personal life is as rich and varied as her professional one. She found love and faced heartbreak with the untimely death of her first husband, John Cline, and later married Neal Windholz, with whom she shares a life farming north of Victoria. Her deep community ties are evident through her ongoing roles, including her service as a Eucharistic Minister at HaysMed for Catholic patients and her active participation in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Walker, KS.

Helen’s retirement celebration was a tribute to her profound impact on HaysMed and the broader healthcare community, reflecting nearly five decades of professional dedication and personal kindness. Colleagues shared stories of her wisdom, the comfort she provided to many patients and their families, and her mentorship of younger nurses. As Helen steps into retirement, HaysMed is confident that the legacy she leaves behind will continue to thrive in the lives of those she has touched.
